Conference Champion Texas State Advances Past Stephen F. Austin
LAKE CHARLES, La. ? Texas State freshman Chandler Hall pitched a complete game allowing one run on four hits as the conference champion Bobcats advance past Stephen F. Austin, 3-1 in the 2009 Southland Conference Softball Tournament.
“It was really good to get this win today. We knew coming into the tournament SFA was a threat and we had to be ready. Coming in as the No. 1 seed is always tough no matter who you are. So it’s really good to get the first win out of the way” said Texas State Coach Ricci Woodard.
Hall, the 2009 Southland Pitcher and Freshman of the year recipient, picks up her league-leading 22nd win of the season improving to 22-9.
Texas State got on the board first as sophomore Allyce Rother singled to center field scoring sophomore McKenzie Baack giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
In the top of the third inning Stephen F. Austin tied the score with their only run of the game as senior Kari Hugie scored on a Texas State wild pitch.
Bobcat senior second baseman Ryan Kos put Texas State back on top, 2-1, hitting her fifth homerun of the season with a left field blast over the scoreboard. Rother followed suit with an almost identical shot to left field for her first homerun of the season giving Texas State a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
With the win Texas State advances in the winner’s bracket and will face the winner of game four between McNeese State and UTSA.
Stephen F. Austin will now play Sam Houston State on Friday at 11 a.m. in an elimination game.
