Lamar Begins Field Turf Installation at Football Stadium
BEAUMONT, Texas - Heavy equipment roared to life and work began Tuesday to prepare for the installation of a state-of-the-art artificial field turf at W.S. "Bud" Leonard Field in the Provost Umphrey Stadium at Lamar University.
Hellas Construction of Austin began demolition of the natural field turf and will install a state-of-the-art artificial field turf system, officials said. Hellas is installing the new "Matrix" field turf, the same product used by the Dallas Cowboys at their new stadium in Arlington.
"Hellas was selected by Lamar to install the field surface after the university, through the Texas State University System, advertised for requests for proposals and received many qualified responses," said Brian Sattler, director of public relations. The company is working under a 90-day project schedule.
Hellas construction comes to Lamar University with many projects completed with the Texas State University System, the University of Texas System and Texas A&M University System. Hellas turf installations can be found in scores of professional, university and high school stadiums across the country.
A few of the projects under the Hellas name include the turf at the Walkup Skydome on the campus of Northern Arizona, the turf used at the University of Oklahoma's indoor baseball facility, as well as football-soccer complexes at ISD stadiums in Alamo Heights, Denton, Jim Ned, Marble Falls and Texas City to name a few.
In addition, the renovation and expansion of the existing field house and stadium will begin as soon as the Texas State University System office provides notice of award. Completion date for this work is slated for later in 2010, prior to the beginning of the official football season. A new field lighting system is included in the renovation of the football complex.
