Kapelan Named Southland Men's Basketball Player of the Week
FRISCO, Texas - McNeese State guard Diego Kapelan has been named the Southland Conference men's basketball player of the week, the league office announced Monday.
Kapelan averaged 25.5 points in a pair of road games at Rice and Texas Tech. The junior from Vancouver, British Columbia (King George), scored 31 points at Rice and added 20 as the Cowboys took No. 24-Texas Tech to the wire before falling 76-75 in Lubbock. His 31 points at Rice was a team high this season and his eight 3-pointers was one off the school record. In the two games last week, Kapelan, who leads the Cowboys with 13.6 points per game, was 16-of-34 from the floor (47.0 percent) and made 12-of-26 from behind the 3-point arc while going perfect in seven shots from the free-throw line. He has made 167 career 3-pointers, which rank fourth on the school's all-time list.
Honorable mention this week goes to Lamar guard Anthony Miles, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi guard/forward Kevin Palmer, Southeastern Louisiana center Patrick Sullivan and Stephen F. Austin forward Jordan Glynn. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland men's basketball sports information directors.
Each school's SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
