SAN MARCOS, Texas - McNeese State freshman right hander Meagan Bond recorded her 21st win of the season as the Cowgirls advanced past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-0 in game one of the 2010 Southland Conference Softball Tournament at Bobcat Field in San Marcos, Texas.

Bond, a second-team all-conference selection, recorded her sixth shutout of the season and sat down four Islanders improving her league-leading strikeout number to 243.

Senior Liz Morvant led the Cowgirls at the plate driving in two of the team's five RBI on the day. Seven McNeese players recorded hits led by sophomore Claire Terracina with three.

With the win the Cowgirls advance to play the No. 1 seed and regular season co-champion Stephen F. Austin later today at 4 p.m.

Playing in its first Southland tournament, A&M-Corpus Christi stranded 10 runners on base and managed just six hits.

The Islanders, now facing elimination, will play the loser of game four Friday in game six at 1:30 p.m.

Game two between No. 3 UT Arlington and No. 6 Nicholls is set for a 1:30 p.m. start.

POSTGAME QUOTES

McNeese State Head Coach - Natalie Poole
(On today's win)

"I was pleased about our performance today. We played them five times this year and lost four of them so we knew we were going to have to swing it."

(On preparing for Stephen F. Austin) "SFA is another opponent that we struggled with this season. We're clearly going to have to do some of the things we did here which was to play solid defense, pitch well and make adjustments at the plate. If we do that, I think we'll be ok."

McNeese State freshman pitcher Meagan Bond
(On the win)

"It was very exciting and I felt blessed about being able to play in the Southland tournament."

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Head Coach - Jake Schumann
(On the game one loss)

"I thought we played our worst game of the season today. We saved our worst for our last. McNeese pitched great, they got timely hitting, which is something we didn't do. We were 0-5 the first five innings with runners in scoring position with less than two outs. Bottom line is we did not execute on the opportunities we had."
