FRISCO, Texas - Southeastern Louisiana senior Cory Roberts and UTSA junior Dana Mecke have been named the 2010 Capital One Bank/Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athletes of the Year, the league office announced Monday in conjunction with the release of the 2009-10 cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field all-academic teams.

Mecke, the 2009 and 2010 Indoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year, posted a grade-point average of 3.88 in mechanical engineering. She is a three-time first-team COSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI selection and has dominated cross country and track and field in the Southland Conference. Mecke was the 2008 Southland Cross Country Athlete of the Year, Student-Athlete of the Year and individual champion. An eight-time conference champion, Mecke is the first Southland women's runner selected student-athlete of the year four times. Mecke won the 800m and mile at the 2010 conference indoor championships to become the first Southland athlete to sweep both races in back-to-back seasons. Mecke also swept the outdoor middle distance events.

Roberts, the repeat winner of the outdoor track and field Student athlete of the year award, posted a 3.84 GPA in biology. As conference champion in the decathlon, he posted the second-highest point total (7,923) in conference outdoor championship history. Roberts qualified for regional competition in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing 35th at the East Regional last month in Greensboro, N.C. He is a two-time first-team CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI selection. Last month, the Southland Conference awarded Roberts the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship - the league's highest academic honor for its top graduates.

Joining the 2010 student-athletes of the year on the all-academic team, which includes student-athletes that competed in cross country in the fall, indoor track and field in the winter and outdoor track and field this spring, are 16 men and 28 women.

Stephen F. Austin earned a league-best 11 combined men's and women's all-academic honors while McNeese State and UTSA netted six apiece.

The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 12 member schools, voted for the student-athletes of the year. The student-athlete of the year award is presented to the one male and one female student-athlete who achieve excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrated achievement in athletics for at least two years at the nominating institution.

The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.

The 2010 Southland Conference Cross Country and Track and Field All-Academic Teams are comprised of student-athletes that competed in cross country, indoor track and field and/or outdoor track and field. Student-athletes earn automatic qualification onto the Southland Conference All-Academic Team if they maintain a GPA of 3.0 in addition to earning either first-team all-conference honors in any of the three seasons and/or a CoSIDA Academic All-District VI Selection.

Included in Capital One's support of the Southland Conference's Academic Awards Program is the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship, the All-Academic Teams, the Student-Athlete of the Year, the Scholar-Athlete Award and the Commissioner's Honor Roll.
