Southland Conference Announces Football Players of the Week

FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin quarterback Brady Attaway was named the Southland Conference Offensive player of the Week after helping lead the Lumberjacks to their third consecutive win last Saturday, the league announced Monday. Additionally, Sam Houston State cornerback Dax Swanson was named the Southland's defensive player of the week and McNeese State punter Ben Bourgeois was named the conference's special teams player of the week.
 
 
Offensive Player of the Week: Brady Attaway, Stephen F. Austin

Attaway completed 24 of 39 passes for 359 yards of total offense and a season-high five touchdowns in leading Stephen F. Austin to a 69-10 victory at Lamar last Saturday. The sophomore from Whitehouse, Texas (Whitehouse H.S.), helped the Lumberjacks to their third consecutive win by guiding an offense that recorded 543 total yards. It was the fourth time this season Attaway has thrown for at least 350 yards. Attaway leads the Southland in passing (291.3) and in total offense (289.7).

Defensive Player of the Week:  Dax Swanson, Sam Houston State

Swanson picked up two more interceptions in Sam Houston State's 38-9 victory at Southeastern Louisiana to run his season total to seven. The junior from Waco, Texas (LaVega H.S.), has picked off four passes in his last two games. His .78 interceptions per game is tied for second in the Football Championship Subdivision. Swanson's first interception of the game set up Sam Houston touchdown. Sam Houston State clinched at least a share of the conference championship and locked up the league's automatic bid into the Division I playoffs.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Ben Bourgeois, McNeese State

Bourgeois averaged 41.8 yards on four punts in the Cowboys' 26-17 victory over Nicholls State that snapped the team's four-game losing streak. The graduate student from Sulphur, La. (Sulphur H.S.), landed three punts inside the 20-yard line and only two were returned for a total of minus-1 yard. Bourgeois is averaging 35.5 yards per punt this season with 12 inside the 20 and three punts longer than 50 yards.

Each school's sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
