FRISCO, Texas - The basketball version of the Battle of the Piney Woods between Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday is the Toyota Game of the Week on the Southland Conference Television Network. Tipoff is at 7:05 p.m., Central.

Sam Houston State has an 8-11 overall record after splitting a pair of home games last week against Texas State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Bearkats beat rival Texas State 71-68 last Wednesday before losing 50-49 to the Islanders on a last-second shot. Two conference losses by a combined three points are why the team is 2-3 in league play instead of 4-1 and in second place in the Southland's West Division. In addition to the one-point loss to the Islanders on Saturday, the Bearkats lost 62-60 against UTSA in the conference opener Jan. 8. The other loss was a 66-40 loss at UT Arlington. Sam Houston also has a win at Nicholls State. Konner Tucker leads three Bearkats who are scoring in double figures with his 11.1 points per game. DeMarcus Gatlin (10.5) and Steven Werner (10.3) join him in double digits. Marcus James is the team's top rebounder, pulling down7.1 rebounds per game, which ranks sixth in the league. Sam Houston leads the Southland in field-goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to 40 percent from the floor.

Stephen F. Austin is 9-9 overall and is 3-2 in Southland action after it split two road games last week. The Lumberjacks won 67-56 at Central Arkansas, but dropped a 63-54 decision at UT Arlington, which has yet to lose a conference game at 6-0. They also have wins against Southeastern Louisiana (63-36) and Texas State (66-65) and a loss to UTSA (59-52). Jereal Scott averages 13.6 points per game to lead SFA in scoring. Antonio Bostic is also scoring in double figures with 10.3 points per game. Taylor Smith is the team's top rebounder, coming off the bench for 5.6 boards a contest. He has the best field goal percentage in the Southland, connecting on 75 percent (63 of 84) of his shots from the floor. The Lumberjacks lead the conference in scoring defense, holding opponents to just 54.6 points in their 18 games. They are the only team in the nation yet to allow 70 points in a game this season. SFA also out-rebounds its opponents by 7.4 rebounds per game, which also leads the league.

This will be the 192nd all-time meeting between the universities in men's basketball. Sam Houston State holds a 99-92 edge. The teams split the two regular-season meetings last year with each team winning on the other team's court. The Bearkats defeated SFA in the opening round of the conference tournament, winning 61-45.

Three-time Louisiana Sportscaster of the Year Lyn Rollins will handle play-by-play duties, and will be joined by Jim Haller, former men's basketball head coach at Baylor. Chris Mycoskie, the Southland Conference's director of television and electronic media, will host the Toyota Halftime Report.
