Southland Television Network to Carry Championship Rematch
FRISCO, Texas - McNeese State will play host to UTSA Wednesday at
Burton Coliseum in a rematch of the championship game of last year's Southland
Conference tournament. The contest, which will tip off at 7:05 p.m., is the
Toyota Game of the Week on the Southland Conference Television Network.
UTSA defeated
the Cowboys 75-72 in the final game of last year's conference tournament to
earn the school's fourth trip to the NCAA tournament, where it opened with a
70-61 win over Alabama State before falling to Ohio State in the second round. The win was
the first in the NCAA tournament by a Southland team since 2006. As the
conference's 2011 regular-season champion, McNeese State earned a berth in the
National Invitation Tournament, but lost to Boston College in an opening-round
home game.
This
year, McNeese State is 12-10 overall, but leads the East Division with an 8-2
record. The Cowboys take a five-game win streak into its game Monday night at
Northwestern State, a team it leads by 1.5 games. Forward Patrick Richard is
averaging 17.5 points per game to not only lead the team, but also the entire
conference. In a 71-56 win over Central Arkansas last Saturday, he scored 22
points and sank all 12 free throws. He has made his last 14 shots from the
charity stripe. Richard has scored 1,420 career points, which ranks him 18th on
the school's all-time scoring chart. McNeese has not lost since Jan. 21 when
Northwestern State made a last-second three-pointer to win 64-61. The Cowboys
are averaging 65.2 points per game heading into the rematch Monday against the
Demons. They also have the league's top defense against the 3-pointer, holding
opponents to just 29.2 percent from long range.
UTSA
is 15-10 overall and is 7-4 in league play to sit in third place of the West
Division standings. The Roadrunners have lost three of their last four games
following a five-game win streak that had them within one game of
league-leading UT Arlington, which has yet to lose a conference game. The
Roadrunners have three scorers averaging at least 13 points per game, led by
Kannon Burrage, who averages 13.6 points per contest. Melvin Johnson III (13.3)
and Jeromie Hill (13.0) are the only others scoring in double figures. Hill is
the team's top rebounder, pulling down 6.2 boards per game. UTSA averages 73.3
points per game, which ranks fourth among Southland teams. The Roadrunners lead
the conference in all three shooting categories, shooting 45.1 percent from the
floor, 39.9 percent from 3-point range and 75.7 percent from the free-throw
line. The Roadrunners also boast a conference-best +3.4 turnover margin and
average 8.2 three-pointers per game, which is also the league standard.
This
will be the 40th meeting between UTSA and McNeese State. The Roadrunners lead
the series 23-16 and have won four in a row, including 78-69 in 2010, the last
time the teams played in Lake Charles.
Three-time Louisiana sportscaster of the
year Lyn Rollins will handle play-by-play duties, and will be joined by former
Baylor head coach Jim Haller. Chris Mycoskie, the Southland Conference's
director of television and electronic media, will host the Toyota Halftime
Report.
