Nicholls St. Drops Season Opener
MOBILE, Ala. - Despite wins in singles play by juniors Dmitry Kozionov and Roy Knight, the Nicholls State University men's tennis team came up short in its spring season opener at South Alabama, falling 5-2 at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
After dropping all three matches in doubles play, the Colonels (1-0) battled back for two points in singles action. Kozionov continued his singles' dominance by picking up a 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 (10-3) victory in the No. 2 slot. For his career, Kozionov improves his singles record to an impressive 30-9.
In the No. 5 slot, Knight, who missed half of the 2011 season due to injuries, picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory for the Colonels. However, South Alabama (2-1) won the other four matches in straight sets to earn a 5-2 victory.
Nicholls will make its home debut on Friday (Feb. 3) when they host future Southland opponent Oral Roberts at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
