Megan Herbert Named Southland Women?s Basketball Player of the Week
FRISCO, Texas - For the second consecutive week and the fourth time this season, Central Arkansas junior forward Megan Herbert has been named Southland Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Herbert helped Central Arkansas to a 2-0 conference record last week with back-to-back double-doubles in wins against Northwestern State and UT Arlington. In both contests, Hebert had her best effort in the second half, averaging 18 points and 6.5 rebounds to help the Sugar Bear's erase halftime deficits. At UT Arlington, the Rogers, Ark. (Shiloh Christian), native had 18 points, six rebounds, two blocks, one steal and one assist in the second half, including three 3-pointers in a two-minute span. Her strong second half play against the Mavericks helped UCA erase a 24-point second half deficit, including an 11-point discrepancy with 3:15 remaining in the game. For the game, Herbert scored 22 points on 87.5 percent (7-for-8) shooting from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc. The Sugar Bears' guard also pulled down 14 rebounds against the Mavericks. At Northwestern State, Herbert recorded 23 points and 13 rebounds, including nine offensive rebounds, to pace Sugar Bears to a crucial divisional road win. Herbert shot 56.0 percent (14-for-25) from the field on the week while averaging 22.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per contest.
Honorable mention this week goes to Sam Houston State junior forward Sequeena Thomas, Texas State junior guard Diamond Ford, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior guard Verne'qua Taylor and Stephen F. Austin senior guard Tammara Marion. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland men's basketball sports information directors.
Each school's sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player.
