Sam Houston State's Bob Brock Earns His 1,000th Career Victory

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Sam Houston State’s Bob Brock became the 22nd head softball coach in NCAA Division I history to post 1,000 career victories Wednesday as the Bearkats swept a doubleheader at Prairie View A&M.

The SHSU softball picked up a pair of shutouts, winning 3-0 and 9-0. Brock, who has coached for 27 years at Sam Houston, Texas A&M and Baylor, earned his 1,000th career win with the first victory and his 1,001th with the nightcap.

All the credit goes to the great young women I’ve had the opportunity to coach,” Brock, who is in his 10th season at Sam Houston State, said. Brock now holds a 1,001-603-1 overall record and stands 14th nationally among active Division I softball coaches in total victories.

Four Sam Houston players hit home runs in the doubleheader. Center fielder Tori Benavidez hit a solo shot in the first game. Sarah Allison, Erin Martin and Shelby Tucker each had home runs in the second contest.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State (27-15) softball program hosted its Strikeout Cancer game tonight as it defeated visiting Houston Baptist (14-27) in the midweek doubleheader, 6-0 and 3-0. All proceeds raised at the game will be donated to the Central Texas Medical Center.

Game 1: Texas State 6, Houston Baptist 0

After going four innings without a run in the game, Texas State was able to take a 1-0 lead on Houston Baptist when Jordan Masek scored after the Husky shortstop threw the ball in the dirt in an attempted putout at first.

Texas State was able to raise more money for CTMC when it recorded five runs in the sixth inning. The inning began with a leadoff by double Anna Hernandez to left center. The Bobcats then rattled off five consecutive singles that led to five runs in the inning and a 6-0 advantage. Texas State was able to hold the Huskies in the seventh inning as it came away with the victory.

Game 2: Texas State 3, Houston Baptist 0

The Bobcats took a 1-0 advantage on the Huskies when pinch runner Brittney Garcia scored from second when Selena Hernandez singled to left center in the bottom of the third.

In the fifth inning it was sacrifice fly by S. Hernandez that would allow Coralee Ramirez to tag up form third. Texas State’s final run of the game was scored in the sixth inning by Haley

Southeastern Louisiana 9, South Alabama 8

HAMMOND, La. – Sophomore first baseman Tori Sheppard, senior catcher Meghan Gomez and junior designated player Kelsey Nichols each hit home runs to lead the Southeastern Louisiana softball team to a 9-8 win over South Alabama in non-conference action Wednesday night at North Oak Park.

Southeastern (10-29) scored three runs in the second, third and fourth innings for the victory – the team’s first over USA since 2007. Senior Vicki Honeycutt (4-3) allowed just one hit in 3.2 innings of relief to earn the win in the circle for the Lady Lions. South Alabama (27-13) saw its three-game winning streak snapped. The Jaguars had previously outscored Southeastern, 24-2, in two previous wins this season.

The Lady Lions outlasted the visiting Jaguars in a wild affair that featured nine extra-base hits – including four home runs. Southeastern head coach Pete Langlois was proud of his team’s effort against a talented South Alabama squad.

Nicholls State 6, Southern 2

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team scored three runs in back-to-back innings and was led by a three RBI-day from Brittany Ezell as the Colonels defeated Southern University, 6-2, on Wednesday night at the Colonel Softball Complex.

With the win, Nicholls improves to 10-25 and 5-6 at home. Southern falls to 4-27 and has lost its last seven.

Ezell, a redshirt junior, led the offense with a career-best outing at the plate, driving in three runs on two hits. Ashton Bennett also had two of the Colonels’ nine hits and scored twice, while Victoria Hugghins finished with two RBIs.

Katie Moulder (5-12) notched the win for the Colonels, tossing 3.2 innings with six strikeouts. She gave up one unearned run on three hits. Bennett came in for 2.2 innings of relief, striking out two while giving up one hit.
