Damian, Garrison Named Southland Softball Players of the Week

Texas – Sam
Houston State junior first baseman Kim Damian has been named the Southland
Conference Hitter of the Week while teammate senior right-hander Tomi Garrison has
been named the Southland Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Damian helped Sam Houston State to two conference sweeps on
the week to improve the Bearkats’ conference record to 6-2. In the midweek
doubleheader against Stephen F. Austin, the Angleton, Texas (Angleton H.S.),
native went 4-for-6 with a double and a RBI to lead Sam Houston to two 5-2
victories against the Ladyjacks. In the weekend series against Northwestern
State, Damian opened the series by hitting the game-winning three-run homerun
against the Demons while going 3-for-4 from the plate with a double, homer, three
runs scored and four RBI. In four games, Damian composed a .538 batting average
(7-for-13) with two doubles, a homerun, five RBI and two runs. She slugged for
.934 percent while producing a .533 on-base percentage.
Garrison picked up two wins and a save last week in the
circle for the Bearkats. In the first game against Stephen F. Austin, Garrison struck
out seven hitters while giving up only one earned run in seven innings of work.
In the second game of the double header, the right-hander from Garland, Texas
(Garland H.S), pitched two innings of shutout ball to pick up the save in
relief. Garrison pitched her second complete game of the week against Northwestern
State, striking out six hitters and not giving up an earned run. In three
appearances on the week, Garrison went 2-0 with one save with an ERA of 0.60.
Opponents only managed a .241 average against her while she fanned 15 batters.
Honorable mention for hitter of the week goes to Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi freshman third baseman Cassie Carroll, Nicholls State junior
first baseman Leah Andrus and UTSA freshman catcher Megan Low. Honorable mention for pitcher of the week
goes to Texas State senior Chandler Hall and Nicholls State junior Ashton
Bennett. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25
percent of the Southland softball sports information directors.
Each school’s
sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week,
though is not permitted to vote for his own player.
