SAN ANTONIO, Texas Down to its final strike twice, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi rally with two runs in the seventh inning to eliminate UTSA, 2-1, in the Southland Conference Softball Tournament at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas.

With two outs in the seventh inning, A&M-Corpus Christi rallied to cap a remarkable comeback and advance one step closer to a return appearance in the championship game. Seniors Cassie Redman and Hannah Schwarz started the rally for the Islanders with singles to center field and then the Islanders loaded the bases when Megan McKinney reached on an error. Both Schwarz and McKinney were down to their final strikes before making contact and keeping the comeback alive. Clean-up hitter Lauren Phillips brought home the tying run when a 0-1 pitch hit her in the forearm. Sophomore Jamise Jackson, who was also down to her last strike, blooped an infield single over the pitcher’s head by beating the throw to first with a head-first slide, scoring the winning run.

Senior Laura Little scored the first run of the game for UTSA by starting the third inning with a single up the middle and advancing to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Megan Low brought Little home with a two-out single up the middle to center. Little just beat the throw from Islanders’ centerfielder Cassie Redman to give the Roadrunners the early 1-0 lead.

Greta Cecchetti came in for two innings of relief to pick up the win and improve to 11-7 on the year. Alyssa Vordenbaum suffered the loss for the Roadrunners and finished the year with a 4-11 record.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (18-22) keeps its championship hopes alive and advances to play again tonight at 7 p.m. The Islanders will face the winner of the Central Arkansas and Sam Houston State elimination game. UTSA finishes its 2012 campaign with a 24-28 record.
