Sam Houston State Wins Pitchers? Duel Against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
SAN ANTONIO, Texas
–Sam Houston State outlasts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 2-0, to move
one game away from the championship game in the Southland Conference Softball Tournament
at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas.
Sam
Houston starting pitcher Tomi Garrison went the distance for the Bearkats,
allowing only four hits. It was the senior right-hander’s 15th complete-game of
the year as she improved to 11-9. Garrison fanned four Islanders while only
issuing one walk in the win.
With
only two hits in the first four innings, Sam Houston State put together a
three-hit fifth inning to the lead. With runners on the corners after two
singles, junior Kim Damian, the conference’s hitter of the year, stepped to the
plate for the Bearkats and drove both runs home with a triple to right field.
It was Damian’s third triple and 33rd and 34th RBI of the season.
Greta
Cecchetti suffered the loss for the Islanders to end her final college season
with an 11-8 record. Cecchetti took a perfect game into the fourth inning
before giving up her first hit. The right-hander recorded seven strikeouts in
6.0 innings of work. Cecchetti allowed two runs on five hits and no walks.
Sam
Houston (28-20) turns around and plays McNeese State tonight at 9:30 p.m. The
winner between the Bearkats and Cowgirls will face Texas State in the
championship tomorrow at 11:05 a.m. A&M-Corpus Christi ends its season with
an 18-23 record.
