LAKE CHARLES, La. - Danielle Steinberg, a former Wichita State University assistant coach has been named the new McNeese head women's tennis coach as announced by Athletics Director Tommy McClelland.

"Danielle represents an exciting future for women's tennis at McNeese," said McClelland.  "I believe she possesses the leadership qualities to lead our program to new levels.  Her experiences as a former student-athlete, collegiate and professional coach gave us confidence we needed to make this important decision."

Most recently, Steinberg served as coach of Romania Oprandi, a WTA professional from Jegenstorf Switzerland.  Steingberg coached her for four months and improved her ranking from #88 to #61 and helped her to the third round of the Australian Open.

Steinberg served as an assistant head coach for Wichita State from 2010-2012.  During her time with the Shockers, she helped the team to the 2011 and 2012 Missouri Valley Conference regular season championship, tournament championship and the NCAA Tournament.  She coached 11 Missouri Valley Conference individual champions while with the Shockers.

Steinberg began her coaching career at the University of Arizona, her alma mater.  She served as a student-assistant where she held plan and conducted practice and conditioning sessions as well as assisted with administrative duties such as recruiting and team travel.

Steinberg was a standout tennis player at the University of Arizona where she was the teams' No. 1 player and team captain throughout her career.  She was a three-time Pac-10 All-Conference pick and was the Pac-10 Toyota Spring Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2009.  Steinberg was also named to the 2006 Academic All-American team and is a three time Pac-10 All-Academic selection.  Steinberg also won the ITA Arthur Ashe Award for Sportsmanship and Leadership in 2009.

What others are saying about Danielle Steinberg:

"Danielle Steinberg is a great addition to the McNeese Athletics Department. She is a driven young woman and will put the program on the map in no time. She has excellent tennis knowledge but, beyond that, understands that college athletics is about delivering the whole package, about caring for student-athletes on the court as well as off it, and about developing young women into confident, well- rounded individuals."
Vicky Maes, Head Women's Tennis Coach, Arizona

"Danielle is an outstanding coach, competitor, and person.  McNeese State will be in more than capable hands under the leadership of Coach Steinberg."
Lisa Hart, Head Women's Tennis Coach, Washington State

"In her time as Wichita State, Danielle has helped lead this team to consecutive conference championships.  She immersed herself in every aspect of the program and was constantly striving for ways to elevate our program, which she did.  I can't thank her enough for the contributions she has made.  McNeese State has selected a coach who will make Cowgirl fans and tennis fans in the Lake Charles community proud to call theirs.  I am excited to watch her continue to grow as a coach and know she will do great things."
