Northwestern State 69, Louisiana Tech 57
NATCHITOCHES, La. – When Amy Staha’s short jumper bounced around and fell through the rim giving Northwestern State a late 12-point lead against Louisiana Tech, Northwestern State co-head coach Brooke Stoehr pumped her fist.
Two minutes and 49 seconds later, Stoehr was simply beaming.
Behind a second consecutive career-high-scoring night from Staha, who tallied 19 points, the Lady Demons downed the Lady Techsters, 69-57, in Louisiana Tech’s first visit to Prather Coliseum in 31 years.
While Staha, Keisha Lee (14 points) and Chelsea Rogers (10) carried the offense, NSU (2-0) kept its defense tightened down all night.
Northwestern State limited Louisiana Tech to 26.5-percent shooting in the first half and 32.9 percent for the game. Despite being outrebounded 48-30, NSU was able to survive by forcing 20 turnovers.
NSU also thrived whenever the Lady Techsters (1-1) threatened to make a run. After holding a double-digit lead for the latter 10 minutes of the first half, NSU saw Louisiana Tech cut the lead to seven on a JaQuan Jackson 3-pointer with 1:16 left in the half.
Sixteen seconds later, Staha drained her third 3 of the first half, re-establishing NSU’s 10-point advantage.
A similar scenario played out in the second half, as Tech again sliced the lead to seven only to see NSU score the next eight points on a pair of TaSheena Moore jumpers, two free throws from Lee and a jumper from Presley Owens.
After being brought along slowly last season while recovering from a knee injury suffered during her senior year of high school, Staha has shown to be fully healthy and has delivered 32 points in the first two games of her sophomore season.
Staha needed just seven field-goal attempts to reach her 19 points, knocking down five shots. She connected on all three of her first-half 3-point attempts and connected on both her 2-point field goals. In the first two games of 2014-15, Staha is 6-for-6 inside the 3-point arc.
Staha’s performance has mirrored that of the Lady Demons’ offense. In the first half of each of its first two games, NSU has shot better than 50 percent from the field.
Tiara Davenport paced Louisiana Tech with 15 points, while Jackson added 12. Kelia Shelton, who led Louisiana Tech with 18 points in its victory against Stephen F. Austin on Saturday, was held to just two points on 1-for-10 shooting.
Northwestern State returns to action at Arkansas at 2 p.m. Sunday. It is the first road game of the season for the Lady Demons, who open the season with three of their first four games at home.

Nicholls 87, Southern (New Orleans) 84
THIBODAUX, La. – Trailing by one with 6.6 seconds remaining, junior guard Emani White drained a step-back 16-foot jumper to give the Nicholls State University women’s basketball team the lead over SUNO, and White stole the inbounds pass and added a layup for a career-high 37 points to put the game away as the Colonels escaped Stopher Gym Tuesday night with an 87-84 win in their home opener.
With the victory, Nicholls evens its record to 1-1, while the Lady Knights, who compete at the NAIA level, fall to 2-2. The Colonels remain undefeated against SUNO with a 6-0 all-time record.
Nicholls got all it could bargain for against SUNO, falling behind as much as 11 points in the second half. Behind 27 points from Victoria Davis, the Lady Knights held an 84-80 advantage with 90 seconds remaining before Nicholls closed the game with a 7-0 run.
The run started when Ekiya Gray, who had seven points and seven rebounds for the Colonels, pulled down two missed shots on the offensive glass, which led to a pair of free throws by Hope Pawlowski with 43 seconds left. Down two, White picked the pocket of former Colonel Kishaun Williams and drew a foul on a layup attempt. After missing the first, White connected on the second to make the score 84-83 SUNO.
On the inbounds, Gray made a great play in the corner to keep the ball in play and Nicholls recovered it, calling a timeout to secure a steal with 25 seconds left. Jenny Nash, who had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds for Nicholls, misfired on a shot but White collected the rebound. With time winding down, White broke down her defender and sank a jumper just outside the free throw line en route to the victory.
White and Nash were the only two Colonels to reach double-figures in scoring, but the team had a total of nine players crack the scoring column and had 24 points off the bench, led by Pawlowski’s eight.
Nicholls shot 41 percent from the field, knocking down 9-of-26 3-pointers. White knocked down 5-of-13 from behind the arc and was 12-of-17 from the floor. She also dished out three assists, had four steals and made 8-of-10 at the free throw line. As a team, Nicholls made 84 percent at the charity stripe.
The game started out with the teams trading 3-balls, and Nicholls would eventually lead by as much as eight in the half. SUNO took the lead at 39-38 with a minute until the break, but White answered with a layup and then nailed a three at the buzzer to give Nicholls a 43-39 lead at half.
SUNO made a frantic five minutes into the second half, turning the game around with a 14-2 spurt to grab a 66-55 advantage. Nicholls came back and took the lead after a Nash layup with less than five minutes to go, but the Lady Knights answered by outscoring Nicholls 12-5 with 120 seconds remaining.
Down 82-76, the Colonels closed out the game in the final two minutes with an 11-2 run to stave off the visitors.
SUNO shot 52 percent from the field and 90 percent at the line. Marquetta Stokes had 16 points while Shonte Dillon and Ksenia Sharan added 12 each.
Nicholls will have an extended break, returning to the court on Nov. 29-30 in the Tennessee State Thanksgiving Classic in Nashville. The Colonels will play Youngstown State at 1 p.m. on Saturday before taking on Norfolk State at 12 p.m. on Sunday.

Southeastern Louisiana 79, Southern University 76
HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana senior guard Symone Miller poured in a game-high 27 points to lead three Lady Lions in double figures, as SLU first-year head coach Yolanda Moore earned her first victory, 79-76, over in-state rival Southern in non-conference women’s basketball action Tuesday night at the University Center.
Southeastern (1-1) led by 12 at halftime and by as many as 18 early in the second half, but Southern (1-1) roared back behind 57.5 percent (23-for-40) shooting in the final 20 minutes. The Lady Jaguars pulled ahead by as many as five points, but Miller and senior backcourt mate Elizabeth Styles came up big down the stretch.
With 6:34 remaining in the game, junior guard Britney Washington gave Southern a 65-60 lead with a jumper off a feed from senior guard Quitesha Scott. After Southeastern answered with a 6-0 run to retake the lead, the advantage would change six times over the next two and a half minutes.
Southern tied the game for the final time on a free throw shot by freshman guard Micah Garvin, knotting the score at 73 with 2:07 remaining. After the two teams traded empty possessions, Styles drew a foul and sunk both free throws to give SLU a 75-73 lead with 1:19 remaining. Styles (6-for-6), Miller (6-for-6) and junior guard Erica Hernandez (4-for-4) were all flawless from the stripe, as the Lady Lions hit 95.5 percent (21-for-22) from the free throw line.
Sophomore Dani Fielder corralled the rebound on a Southern miss on the ensuing possession to give Southeastern a chance to add to its lead. Styles milked the shot clock down and hit a tough floater from just outside the paint to give the Lions a four-point lead with 32 seconds remaining.
Southern would not go away, quietly, as senior Kendra Coleman completed a three-point play to cut the lead to 77-76 with 23.1 seconds left. However, with the shot clock off, Southern failed to foul senior guard Jameika Hoskins until the game clock had run under three seconds. Hoskins calmly hit both free throws and Scott’s half court attempt was well short, giving Southeastern a three-point victory.
Miller was joined in double figures by Styles (17 points) and Hoskins (11 points). The Lady Lions finished with a 46-39 rebounding advantage, as junior forward Nanna Pool led Southeastern with 10 rebounds, followed by Hoskins and senior wing Annessa De La Cruz with eight and seven boards, respectively. Styles also led the Lady Lions with four assists and two steals.
Senior forward Jasmine Jefferson led a balanced Lady Jaguar attack with 17 points, as she was joined in double figures by Washington (16 points), Coleman (13 points) and freshman guard Briana Green (10 points). Junior forward Kenidi Robinson led SU with eight rebounds, while Scott dished out a game-high five assists.
Southeastern will be back in action on Friday, traveling to Troy for a 12 p.m. contest. Live stats, audio and video (subscription required), provided by Troy, will be accessible at LionSports.net.
