SAN MARCOS, Texas – Senior forward Shanice Steenholdt recorded game highs of 19 points and 16 rebounds as HBU defeated Texas State, 61-56, Saturday afternoon at Strahan Coliseum.
 
Steenholdt went 7-of-15 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line to lead HBU (1-2). Tayler Jefferson scored 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while Lisa Zderadicka came off the bench to score seven. The Huskies shot 41 percent from the floor and forced 19 Bobcat turnovers.
 
Kaitlin Walla came off the bench to score 15 points for Texas State (1-2), while Meghan Braeuer added 10. The Bobcats shot 35 percent from the floor.
 
Steenholdt scored the first six points of the game, but a jumper in the paint by Kileah Mays stopped the run and began a 12-0 run for Texas State that forced HBU to take a timeout at the 14:13-mark and the Huskies down six, 12-6. A jumper by Jefferson stopped the 14-0 Bobcat run and made the score, 14-8, with 13 minutes remaining in the first half.
 
The Huskies put the defensive pressure on and forced several Bobcat turnovers. A three-pointer by Zderadicka tied the match at 21-all, erasing a deficit as big as 10 as one point. Erin Peoples came right back down the floor for Texas State and had an and-one play to bring the Bobcats back up three, 24-21, with 5:24 remaining in the opening half. Back-to-back scores by Jefferson – two free throws and a fast-break layup – gave the Huskies their first lead since 6-0, as HBU led 25-24 with 4:20 to go.
 
A put-back by Monet Neal gave HBU the lead right back, 27-26, with just over two minutes to go in the first half. The Huskies closed out the first half on an 8-0 run, forcing two Bobcat turnovers in the process, to lead Texas State at halftime, 33-26.
 
Steenholdt and Jefferson combined for 22 first-half points, as Steenholdt led all players with 12 points and seven rebounds and Jefferson had 10 points. HBU shot 47 percent from the floor. Walla came off the bench to score a team-high nine points for Texas State, while Mays had five points and five rebounds. The Bobcats shot 34 percent from the floor.
 
Ashleigh Nwanguma scored the first three points of the second half to build the Huskies’ lead to 10, 36-26, two minutes into the second half.
 
Texas State used a 10-0 run in a span of four minutes to turn a 36-36 deficit to a 36-36 tie, thanks to an Ayriel Anderson three-pointer. Maisie Elston answered with a jumper to put the Huskies back on top, but the Bobcats nailed a trey in the corner to lead by one, 39-38, with 11:49 remaining in regulation.
 
The teams went back and forth, exchanging leads. A beautiful Zderadicka bounce pass leading to an Anna Strickland layup gave HBU a 44-43 lead with 9:42 remaining in the second half. The teams continued to battle back and forth. The Huskies and Bobcats entered the final media timeout with HBU holding a one-point lead, 54-53 lead, following a layup by Steenholdt with 3:56 to go in the game.
 
HBU scored back-to-back buckets to take a four-point lead, 59-54, and force Texas State to take a timeout with just under two minutes to go in regulation.
 
HBU took a timeout holding a five-point lead, 61-56, and Texas State about to take two free throws with 19.7 seconds remaining. The Huskies were able to run out the clock and defeat the Bobcats for the second-consecutive meeting.
 
HBU will host Southwestern Assemblies of God, Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 6:30 pm in its home opener.

Central Arkansas 56, Jackson State 45

MACON, Ga. — After dropping their first two games of the Preseason WNIT to Western and Eastern Kentucky, Central Arkansas closed out their three-game season-opening swing in the tournament with a wire-to-wire win over Jackson State on Saturday, winning 56-45.
 
The Sugar Bears (2-1) ran out to an early lead and went ahead by 10 with just under 5 minutes to play in the half, and the Tigers (0-3) were able to trim the deficit to single digits just twice, for less than a minute total, as the Sugar Bears would build a lead as large as 20 in the 2nd half.
 
Leading 28-20 late in the first half, the Sugar Bears went on a 15-3 run over the next 10:30 to build the lead up to 20 at 43-23 and cruised to their first win of the season after losing 93-57 at Western Kentucky in the opener and 56-55 in heartbreaking fashion against Eastern Kentucky on Friday, losing a lead in the final seconds.
 
UCA shot just 34.6 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from 3-point range, but clamped down defensively on JSU – holding the Tigers to 30.9 percent shooting and 28.6 percent from beyond the arc. The Sugar Bears were also perfect from the free throw line, making 15 of 15 led by Brittany Agee's 6 of 6. 
 
The Sugar Bears also had their way on the boards, grabbing 44 rebounds to JSU's 29, getting 17 offensive rebounds that they converted to 12 points. Sophomore Raquel Logan led the way with a career-high 9 to pace the Sugar Bears. 
 
Maggie Proffitt again led UCA in scoring, getting 15 points on 5 of 15 shooting including going 3 for 8 from 3-point range. Kendara Watts had 11, Agee 8, freshman Angel Williams 7, Brianna Mullins 6, Terai Sadler 5 and both Logan and Kelsey McClure 2 each.
 
UCA will make its 2014-15 home debut on Tuesday when the Sugar Bears host Lyon College. They will play four of their next five in the Farris Center, hosting Jacksonville State next Saturday, Central Baptist College on Dec. 4 and Southeast Missouri State on Dec. 6.

Jacksonville State 65, New Orleans 51

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (0-2) went through a six-minute drought in the second half and were defeated 65-51 by the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (2-1) on Saturday at Pete Mathews Coliseum.

The Privateers played most of the first half from behind and trailed by as many as nine when Jacksonville State hit a 6-0 spurt to go up 18-9 with 11:26 remaining in the opening half. New Orleans clawed back with a 6-0 run in response and gained their first lead of the game on a Kayla Mundy 3-pointer with 4:14 remaining in the first.

That advantage was short-lived as Jacksonville State came back with a 14-2 run over the last four minutes of the half. In that span, the Privateers went 1-for-6 from the field and turned the ball over three times. New Orleans had 12 turnovers in the first half to just four for the Gamecocks.

In the second half, New Orleans got the deficit as close as three when Randi Brown hit her first triple of the game and Mathilde Fogelstrom followed with a bucket for five quick points after the media timeout at 11:44 to cut the Jacksonville State lead to 46-43.

The Privateers were held without a field goal for the ensuing six minutes, and Jacksonville State opened the lead back up to 11 on a 9-1 run. New Orleans got the lead back down to seven with 4:53 left, but could not draw any closer.

Raven Coleman scored eight points and pulled down nine rebounds in her season debut after missing the opener with a concussion. Danielle Davis also added eight points and the Privateers narrowly out-rebounded Jacksonville State 44-42. New Orleans was held to 33 percent from the field (21-for-63).

Jacksonville State won the turnover battle, committing 10 fewer turnovers than the Privateers. Individually, four players scored in double figures led by Candace Morton and Destany McLin who had 15 points each. Courtney Strain and Miranda Cantrell each added 10 points.

The Privateers will return home for the next contest against Mississippi State on Nov. 29. Tip is for 2 p.m.
