McNeese State 57, Southern Miss 55
LAKE CHARLES, La. -- Allison Baggett’s two free throws with six seconds left gave McNeese a State 57-55 come from behind win over Southern Miss Sunday afternoon at Burton Coliseum.
 
McNeese (3-1) erased a 12-point deficit with 18:09 to play by going on a 20-8 run in a span of 11 minutes to tie the game at 47 all with 7:14 to play. The game would go through four more ties in the final five minutes of the game.
 
The Cowgirls won the game on the boards by outrebounding Southern Miss (3-1) 45-28. McNeese ended the game with 19 offensive rebounds and 26 defensive rebounds, allowing the Lady Eagles to only five offensive rebounds.
 
“We followed the game plan. We rebounded really well which was a huge point of emphasis to outrebound them the way we did.  They are an extremely good rebounding team and we certainly did our job on the boards.”
 
Senior Talisa Boyd picked up her first career double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds.  Victoria Rachal contributed with 13 points and Baggett chipped in 12.
 
Southern Miss was led by Jerontay Clemons’ 15 points.  Southern Miss shot the ball well throughout the game and ended the game shooting 46.0 percent from the field on 23-of-50.  The Cowgirls ended the game shooting 32.8 percent on 20-of-61 from the field.  For the second straight game the Cowgirls shot well from the free line, making 13 of 16 from the charity.
 
McNeese will travel to nationally ranked Texas A&M next Wednesday for their first road test of the season.

Indiana 85, UIW 49
BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA – The University of the Incarnate Word traveled to Indiana University on Sunday afternoon and lost, 85-49 at Assembly Hall.

The Cardinals (2-0) never led in their first ever game against a Big Ten opponent.  The Hoosiers (4-0) scored the first 10 points of the game and ran away from the Cardinals in the first half.  They outscored UIW, 43-15 in the first half and shot 53.1 percent from the field while holding the Cardinals to 21.2 percent shooting.

In the second half, the Cardinals played much better and were only outscored, 42-34.  UIW shot 50.0 percent from the field in the half while the Hoosiers shot 43.3 percent from the field.

Overall, the Cardinals shot 34.9 percent from the field, made 3-of-14 from three-point range and were 2-for-6 at the foul line.  Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) was the only player on the team to score in double figures with 14 points.  Haley Frias (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) and Shanise Brooks (Topeka, KS/Highland Park HS) each scored nine points while Jazmine Holman (Arlington/Arlington Bowie HS) had six rebounds, five assists and four steals.  Brooks also blocked four shots.  The team had 28 rebounds and committed 19 turnovers.

The Hoosiers shot 48.4 percent from the field, made 6-of-22 from three-point range and were 19-of-24 at the charity stripe.  Jenn Anderson led the team with 21 points and Tyra Buss added 17 points.  Amanda Cahill posted a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.  They had 50 rebounds, 22 assists and 16 turnovers as a team.

The Cardinals are back in action at the UTSA Classic this weekend where they will play Fordham on Friday at noon and UTSA on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

UTSA 72, Lamar 40
BEAUMONT, Texas – Freshman April Levy had a pair of career highs for the Lamar Lady Cardinals in a 72-40 loss to visiting UTSA in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday afternoon.
 
Levy came off the bench to contribute seven points and four rebounds for the Lady Cardinals (0-4), but Lamar couldn’t overcome early foul trouble and cold shooting.
 
Edwards, who was coming off back-to-back double-doubles, picked up two quick fouls, and played just three minutes in the first half as Lamar fell into a 33-17 deficit at intermission. Edwards finished with two points and one rebound in 16 minutes for the game.
 
Shauna Long led Lamar with eight points off the bench. Long drained a pair of 3-pointers to give her 125 for her career, putting her in sole possession of fourth place on Lamar’s all-time list. Danyelle Grimes is third with 131 treys.
 
Kianda Bowers had six points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Lady Cardinals.
 
UTSA (2-1) received 16 points and nine rebounds from Tesha Smith. Kamra King added 12 points for the Roadrunners.
 
The Lady Cardinals trailed by just two points, 8-6, with 13:54 remaining in the first half  before UTSA went on a 10-0 run to build an 18-6 lead with 11:05 left in the half. Lamar got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
 
Freshman guard Baileigh O’Dell, who scored in double figures in each of her first three games, had four points for Lamar on Sunday, but collected a career-high four rebounds. Freshman Lejha Smith also had a career-best four rebounds for the Lady Cardinals.
 
Lamar looks to get back on the winning track when it travels to Texas State at 7 p.m. Tuesday for a non-conference game. The Lady Cardinals return home to host St. Thomas (Texas) at 4 p.m. Nov. 29 and Huston-Tillotson at 7 p.m. Dec. 2.

Arkansas 78, Northwestern State 30
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The shots Northwestern State took, for the most part, were shots co-head coach Brooke Stoehr wanted to see her players take.
 
They just did not go in the basket. Northwestern State shot 10 for 63 from the field Sunday, and suffered its first loss of the season, a 78-30 drubbing at the hands of undefeated Southeastern Conference foe Arkansas.
 
 
The Lady Demons (2-1) were held to 3-for-34 shooting in the second half and the 30 points marked the fewest in school history.
 
The Lady Demons held their own defensively, limiting the Razorbacks (4-0) to 42.2-percent shooting for the game – 37.1 percent in the first half. Arkansas became the first team to top 33-percent shooting against NSU this season.
 
TaSheena Moore went 3-for-9 from the floor and paced Northwestern State with nine points. Amy Staha, who averaged 16 points per game in NSU’s 2-0 start, was held to five points.
   
Kelsey Brooks paced Arkansas with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. Brooks had 11 points and grabbed six rebounds in the first half, as the Razorbacks built a 21-point lead.
 
NSU never led in the game, which was scoreless until Arkansas’ Melissa Wolff scored on a layup at the 17:41 mark of the first half.
 
Wolff, who had double-doubles in Arkansas’ first two games, was held to seven points and two rebounds, but Jessica Jackson (18 points), Katie Powell (11 points) and Jhasmin Brown (seven points, 10 rebounds) picked up her slack.
 
Led by Brooks and Brown, the Razorbacks outrebounded the Lady Demons by 16, leading to a 15-5 advantage in second-chance points.
 
 
The Lady Demons return to action Tuesday night at 6:30 when they host LSU-Alexandria at Prather Coliseum. ?
