BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU finished the game on a 30-5 run to pull away for a 75-42 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in non-conference women’s basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
Scoring droughts at the ends of each half doomed SLU (3-6) in its third straight road loss to a Southeastern Conference opponent. LSU (4-4) also outscored Southeastern, 20-2, to close the first half. The Lady Lions hit just 27.1 percent (16-for-59) of their field goal attempts and shot just 2-for-22 from three-point range.
The senior backcourt of Symone Miller and Elizabeth Styles led the Lady Lions with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Junior forward Nanna Pool led SLU with a game-high 11 rebounds, while Styles dished out a team-high four assists. Styles, senior forward Jameika Hoskins and junior guard Erica Hernandez each had two steals.
LSU was led by senior guard DaShawn Harden, who finished with a game-high 20 points and four steals. Senior forward Sheila Boykin posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while junior wing Anne Pedersen chipped in with 10 points for the Tigers. LSU sophomore wing Raignye Moncrief added eight points, nine rebounds and a game-high nine assists.
The opening 10 minutes were back-and-forth with the lead changing six times early on. With 10:50 left, a Hoskins basket cut the LSU lead to 13-12. Unfortunately for SLU, it would not make another field goal for the rest of the first half and went into halftime down, 33-14.
LSU would grow the lead to as much as 22 early in the second half. SLU would not go away quietly, however, as it held LSU scoreless for a stretch of nearly five minutes. A Pool jumper fell to cap a 14-2 run and cut the Tigers’ advantage to 49-39 with 7:09 remaining.
However, the tables turned once again. LSU scored 20 unanswered points over the next six minutes on the way to the 33-point final margin.
Southeastern will return home on Saturday to host Florida A&M at 2 p.m. in the University Center. The game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at
www.LionSports.net, where live stats and a live video stream (LionVision subscription required) will also be accessible.
Sophomore guard Bre’ Warren will be Saturday’s Spotlight Player of the Game and the first 100 fans will receive a trading card featuring the Slidell native courtesy of PRIDE.

No. 3 Texas 74, Northwestern State 34
AUSTIN, Texas – Third-ranked Texas enjoyed quick starts to the game and the second half Sunday, setting the tone for a 74-34 victory at the Frank Erwin Center.
In addition to quick offensive starts, the Longhorns (8-0) forced Northwestern State into a season-high 24 turnovers, turning those into 23 points and cruised to the victory.
Texas scored the game’s first 16 points before Janelle Perez’ layup at the 15:10 mark got NSU on the scoreboard. In the second half, Presley Owens made a pair of free throws at the 17:12 mark and hit the Lady Demons’ first second-half field goal at the 16:37 mark.
Owens’ free throws snapped an 11-0 Texas run that spanned the final 1:26 of the first half and the first 2:48 of the second.
Kelsey Lang, Texas’ 6-foot-5 forward, and Tasia Foman paced the Longhorns with 12 points while Nneka Enemkpali added 10 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Beatrice Attura paced NSU (4-4) with a season-best 12 points, all in the second half. Owens added six points and Keisha Lee had five for the Lady Demons.
The third-ranked Longhorns got off to a sizzling start, knocking down 10 of their first 15 field-goal attempts, in building a lead that grew to 33-7 on a Tasia Foman jumper at the 7:56 mark of the first half.
The Lady Demons found their defensive footing soon after, holding Texas to 40 percent shooting the rest of the half (6-of-15), including a 2-for-10 stretch.
A change in the lineup sparked the defensive pressure that held Texas without a point for 6:30.
That strong defense allowed NSU to craft a 6-0 run on three baskets as the shot clock was winding down. Freshman Tia Youngblood battled through tight defense to flip in a short basket, which was followed by a Janelle Perez layup and a runner by Amy Staha.
The run ended when Krystle Henderson knocked down her second 3-pointer of the first half, helping the Longhorns score the final five points of the half.
The Lady Demons jump back into action Wednesday when they host Arkansas-Monticello at 6:30 p.m. in Prather Coliseum. That game is Northwestern State’s first home game in 16 days, dating to a 71-43 victory against Central Baptist College on Dec. 1.

No. 9 Baylor 96, Stephen F. Austin 57
WACO, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women’s basketball team played the ninth-ranked Baylor Lady Bears tough in significant stretches on Sunday afternoon in the Ferrell Center, but couldn’t keep pace in a 96-57 Baylor win. The game was played in front of 5,947 fans – the most in attendance at an SFA game this year.
Senior center Porsha Roberts had a big afternoon in her first collegiate game in her hometown. The La Vega High School standout scored 18 points on 8-for-14 shooting while hauling in eight rebounds and blocking five shots.
Roberts scored the first six points for SFA (5-4) as the Ladyjacks jumped out to a 6-3 lead and carried it to the under 16:00 media timeout. She also grabbed three boards and rejected a shot in the early going to help the Ladyjacks control the first four minutes of play.
SFA played solid defense over the span as well, forcing three turnovers and limiting Baylor (8-1) to just three free throws. The Lady Bears started the game 0-for-9 from the field.
Baylor struggled to find separation for the better part of the first half but used a 12-3 run to go up 30-16 with 7:04 in the opening frame. SFA sophomore guard Brentney Branch knocked down a deep three-pointer as the shot clock was winding down to stop the spurt. She was also able to connect on a three from the corner in the midst of the run and hit three from beyond the arc overall in the half.
The second best scoring offense in the country continued to pick up steam over the next several minutes. The Lady Bears shot 55 percent from the field in the first half and took a 50-27 advantage into the locker rooms. Baylor hit 32 of 42 shots during one stretch and executed at a 74 percent clip in the second 20 minutes alone to turn in a 63 percent shooting afternoon.
Sophomore forward Nina Davis, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week, scored a game-high 33 points on 12-for-15 shooting and sophomore guard Alexis Prince pitched in 20 points on 9-for-11 shooting to lead the Lady Bears.
For the Ladyjacks, Branch and senior Tierany Henderson joined Roberts in double-figures, finishing with 12 and 10 points respectfully. Branch went 4-for-7 from deep and Henderson knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the second half.
Sophomore guard and SFA’s leading scorer Taylor Ross picked up three early fouls which limited her playing time. She ended the game with five points, four assists and three steals.
Senior Brittney Matthew was able to find the shooters for the Ladyjacks, distributing a team-high six assists on the afternoon.
Behind Ross and Matthew, SFA did a good job limiting turnovers throughout the contest. The Ladyjacks gave the ball up just 14 times while taking it away from Baylor 13 times. The difference in the game came at the line and in the paint. Baylor used its large size advantage to outscore SFA 52-28 in the lane and get to the line 22 more times than the Ladyjacks.
SFA will return home to Nacogdoches to begin preparing for a game on Saturday, Dec. 20 against Arizona at 4:30 p.m. inside William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks beat the Wildcats 60-56 in Tucson last year on Nov. 20.
