Louisiana Tech 80, Nicholls 62
RUSTON, La. – The Nicholls State University women’s basketball team battled with Louisiana Tech through the first 10 minutes, but the Lady Techsters took advantage of 15 first-half turnovers by the Colonels and pieced together a 17-2 run before the break as Nicholls fell, 80-62, Monday night at the Thomas Assembly Center.

Both teams struggled to find points after the opening tip, but Nicholls (3-4) pounded the ball inside and never trailed until the 10:37 mark at 13-12. But the turnovers caught up to the Red and Gray as Louisiana Tech (4-4) quickly turned the miscues into points.

Nicholls saw its last lead of the game with a little over nine minutes left in the half when Marina Lilly scored inside to put the score at 16-15. The Lady Techsters scored the game’s next nine points and saw their first double-digit lead at 28-18 with 5:18 to go in the half. A Colonel turnover led to another easy bucket which capped the big run, giving LA Tech a 32-18 advantage.

Over the last four minutes of the period, the home team continued to pour it on as the Colonels headed into the locker room trailing 47-25, their largest halftime deficit of the season.

LA Tech not only took advantage of the Colonels’ 15 turnovers, turning them into 19 points, but the Tech bench outscored Nicholls 27-2 in the first twenty minutes.

In the second half, Nicholls fell behind by as much as 26 but continued to battle. The Colonels cut the deficit to 11 with less than three minutes left; however, could never trim the margin to single digits as Louisiana Tech went on to avenge last season’s loss to the Colonels. With the win, LA Tech improved its record to 16-1 over Nicholls.

Freshman Ekiya Gray led Nicholls with a career-high 14 points, scoring 10 in the second half. Jenny Nash recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and also contributed with seven assists, three blocks and a steal. Nash was credited with seven of the Colonels’ 24 turnovers, while Lilly contributed with 12 points.

The Colonels shot 40.3 percent from the field but made just 3-of-14 from behind the arc. Nicholls, which headed into the game shooting 76 percent from the free throw line, connected on only 9-of-17 at the stripe.

LA Tech was led by Whitney Frazier and Ruby Richie with 16 points each. The Lady Techsters shot 36 percent from the floor and outrebounded Nicholls 53-45, helped by 21 on the offensive glass.

Nicholls returns to the court in the Athletes in Action Tournament hosted by Texas Tech, starting Friday, Dec. 19 at 5:30 p.m. against the host Lady Raiders. Nicholls will take on Houston on Dec. 20 and closes out the weekend Sunday against former Southland foe, UTSA.

Tennessee State 72, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 61

CORPUS CHRISTI - Turnovers spoiled the Islanders women's basketball team's American Bank Center debut on Monday night, as the team fell to Tennessee State, 72-61.

Shay Weaver, who scored 17 points and pulled down 6 rebounds on the night, led A&M-Corpus Christi. Senior Olivia Fouty put in 16 points and grabbed 10 boards for her fourth double-double of the year.

Tennessee State was able to jump out to an early lead thanks in part to their outside shooting and defensive pressure. The Lady Tigers (2-6) forced the Islanders into 27 turnovers, which they turned into 29 points in the game. TSU hit 8-of-12 three-pointers in the game.

After trailing 41-20 going into the locker room, the Islanders started the second half on a 10-2 run, cutting TSU's lead to 13 at the 15:55 mark. Just four minutes into the half, the Islanders had equaled the number of field goals (four) they made in the entire first half.

Freshman Emmeri Archer made it a seven-point game after draining two free throws with 10:25 left. The Lady Tigers scored five quick points, starting with a jumper by Rachel Allen followed by a three by Brianna Lawrence. The Islanders would not get within single-digits following TSU's run.

A&M-Corpus Christi got off to a tough start, turning the ball over seven times in the first eight minutes. Tennessee State turned the Islanders miscues into 13 points during that stretch. TSU was able to drain the trey in the first half, connecting on its first six attempts and finishing the half 7-of-9 from behind the arc. Sophomore forward Camesha Davis led the Islanders in the first half with six points.

As a team, the Islanders shot 25-of-29 (86.2) from the charity stripe. Prior to the Monday, the team was shooting 62.2 percent on the season.
The Islanders will return to action on Wednesday as they play host to Oakland University. The Golden Grizzlies and Islanders will tip off at 7 p.m. on Stripes Court at the American Bank Center.

Oklahoma State 84, New Orleans 33
STILLWATER, Okla. – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (1-5) were held to the lowest field goal percentage so far this season in an 84-33 loss to the Oklahoma State Cowgirls (7-1) on Monday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Oklahoma State sprinted to an early 9-2 lead after the first four minutes of play. Randi Brown then hit a right wing three pointer to pull the Privateers back within four, but the Cowgirls steadily drew away after that point.

The Cowgirls started to use the press more as the half went on to extend their lead, forcing 18 Privateers turnovers in the opening half. However, New Orleans' hustle on defense kept the Cowgirls in check early, holding the 19th-ranked team in the country without a field goal for a three-minute stretch that lasted until the 11-minute mark.

Oklahoma State's relentless pressure helped them pull away as the half went on. The Cowgirls ended the half by scoring 23 of the last 30 points and carried a 47-16 lead to the locker room as several Privateers battled foul trouble early on.

Throughout the game, New Orleans struggled to get an offensive rhythm going against a strong Oklahoma State squad. The Privateers shot just 25 percent from the field (12-of-48) and turned the ball over 26 times. New Orleans was also out-rebounded 44-25 on the night.

Leading the way individually were Halie Matthews and Octavia Wilson who had six points each. Matthews also led the team in rebounds with five. Randi Brown had five points in 11 minutes and Yasmin Taylor had four steals. The Privateers forced 17 Cowgirls turnovers.

Oklahoma State was led by Roshunda Johnson who went for a career-high 22 points while making four of the team's five three-pointers on the night. Brittney Martin also cracked double figures with 10 points for a Cowgirls squad that shot 55.4 percent on the night.

The Privateers will next travel to take on Tulsa on Thursday night. Tip is slated for 7 p.m.
