Northwestern State 71, Central Baptist 43

NATCHITOCHES, La. – With three games in six days starting Monday, Northwestern State women’s basketball co-head coach Brooke Stoehr was looking for some balance.

Her team found it for her Monday night against Central Baptist College.

Behind a career-high-tying 14 points from Presley Owens and scoring from 11 players in all, Northwestern State cruised to a 71-43 victory against the visiting Lady Mustangs.

Eleven Lady Demons played double-figure minutes, as NSU (4-1) picked up a victory in its last home game until Dec. 17.

The balance showed in different facets of the game. While Owens and junior point guard Janelle Perez (11 points) were the only double-figure scorers for NSU, four Lady Demons grabbed six rebounds apiece while two others collected four.

That team effort helped NSU outrebound the Mustangs, 40-27.  Additionally, NSU notched 14 assists on its 22 field goals.

Owens’ play also stood out as a positive. Owens, a 6-foot-1 senior, needed just six field-goal attempts to tally her 14 points and did so in 15 minutes of playing time. She also tied a career high with three assists.

Much like Owens, Perez turned in an efficient offensive game, connecting on four of five field goals, including three of four 3-point attempts.

Rachel Eitherington led Central Baptist, an NAIA school that counted Monday’s game as an exhibition, with a game-high 16 points on 5-of-15 shooting.

Eitherington’s night was typical of what NSU’s defense did to Central Baptist, as the Lady Demons held the Mustangs to 30.4-percent shooting on the night.

Northwestern State returns to action Wednesday at 11 a.m. when it travels to College Station, Texas, to face No. 5 Texas A&M.
