HOUSTON, Texas – Behind junior guard
Meghan Shank's career day, Houston Baptist women's basketball defeated visiting Huston-Tillotson, 86-36, Sunday afternoon from Sharp Gym.
Shank scored a career-high 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting to lead HBU (6-4). She pulled down three rebounds and had one assist. Her seven steals were the most since
Monet Neal had nine at UC Davis Dec. 21, 2012. Shank was one of five Huskies in double figures, as
Erin McGarrachan and
Anna Strickland both had double-doubles. McGarrachan had 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Strickland posted 17 points and her 18 rebounds were a season-high for the team and the most since Neal pulled down 19 at Lamar Jan. 30, 2013.
Ashleigh Nwanguma scored 11 points, while Neal came off the bench to score 15.
HTU (3-6) was led by Charmin Woods with nine points, as she went 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Alicia Flores-Mays, Ja'Danrian Thompson, and Lolita Franklin each pulled down a team-high five rebounds.
HBU spotted the Lady Rams the game's first basket before going on a 19-2 run. HTU scored its second basket of the game at the 11:25-mark, making the score 19-6.
The Huskies used an 18-0 run to take a 31-point lead, 37-6, before Victoria Elizalde's jumper stopped the bleeding at the 5:47-mark. The Huskies closed the half doubling up HTU, 6-3, to lead the Lady Rams at halftime, 43-9. It marked the first time HBU held an opponent to single digits in a half since the 2002-03 Huskies held visiting Southwestern Assemblies of God to nine second-half points March 3, 2003.
Strickland already had a double-double in the first half, as she led all players with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Heidi Sihvola had two points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Shank had four of her seven steals in the opening half.
Ekemini Essien came off the bench to score six points and register two rebounds and three assists. The Huskies shot 49 percent from the floor.
Elizalde led HTU with four points in the first half. The Lady Rams shot just 11 percent from the floor.
HTU had a three-pointer by Franklin in its first second-half possession, but HBU went onto a 9-0 run to lead 54-12 with 15 minutes remaining.
Emely Lopez scored her first-collegiate points with a three-pointer with 10:43 remaining to give the Huskies a 65-14 advantage.
Shank scored a half-high 13 points, while Strickland pulled down a half-best seven rebounds. The Huskies shot 47 percent from the floor in the second half and 48 percent in the game.
Woods scored all nine of her points in the second half, leading the Lady Rams. HTU shot 32 percent in the half and 21 percent in the game.
HBU closes the 2014 portion of the season at Texas Tech Tuesday at 7 pm before beginning Southland Conference play hosting reigning SLC tournament champions, Northwestern State, Friday, Jan. 2 at 3 pm.

Wichita State 70, Sam Houston State 46
Wichita, Kansas – Junior guard Shernise Robertson led both teams with 20 points as Wichita State defeated Sam Houston State 70-46 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday afternoon at the Charles Koch Center.
Jamillah Bonner led the Shockers with 17 points as WSU upped its record to 9-3. Sam Houston fell to 1-9 with the loss.
The matchup marked the final non-conference contest of the season for the SHSU women. The Kats play host to Incarnate Word at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 3, in their Southland Conference opener.
Wichita State led from wire to wire, building a 36-13 lead at intermission and going up by 33 points five minutes into the second period. Sam Houston bounced back to make the second half even as WSU outscored the Kats only 34-33 in the final 20 minutes.
Saundra Guillory also scored in double digits with 11 points and seven rebounds. Jazmin Wiley led the Kats under the boards with eight rebounds.
Wichita State’s defense created 27 Bearkat turnovers which the Shockers converted into 36 points.
Sam Houston had an outstanding afternoon at the free throw line, hitting 19-of-23 charity shots. Robertson was 10-of-10 from the free throw line.

Rice 97, Lamar 63
HOUSTON, Texas –JaMeisha Edwards had 19 points, while Dominique Edwards had 17 points for the Lamar Lady Cardinals, but it wasn’t enough in a 97-63 loss at Rice in a non-conference women’s basketball game on Sunday afternoon.
Lamar (3-8) trailed by just eight points, 41-33, at halftime, only to see Rice (5-5) outscore the Lady Cardinals 56-30 in the second half.
JaMeisha Edwards had 17 of her points in the first half, while Dominique Edwards had 14 points in the opening period to keep the Lady
Cardinals in the game. Baileigh O’Dell was Lamar’s top scorer in the second half, with 10 of her 12 points coming after intermission.
Rice dominated the boards, outrebounding Lamar 48-22 for the game. The Owls also used a strong shooting performance to subdue Lamar. Rice connected on 54.7 percent of its shots (35-of-64) for the game, including 61.3 percent
(19-of-31) in the second half. Rice was 5-of-9 (55.6 percent) from 3-point range for the game.
Kiandra Bowers had five rebounds for Lamar, while JaMeisha Edwards had four assists and four steals. Rice had four players score in double figures, led by Christal Porter, who finished with 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Lamar led by as many as four points in the early going and had a 29-27 lead with 4:28 remaining in the first half before Rice closed out the period on a 14-4 run. Rice proceeded to put the game away by opening the second half on a 15-4 run.
Lamar returns to action at 4 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Nicholls in the Southland Conference opener for both teams.
