Stephen F. Austin 90, Texas A&M-Kingsville 50

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team used 31 points from senior center Porsha Roberts and shot at a season-high clip to storm past Texas A&M-Kingsville 90-50 on Tuesday night in William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks improve to 4-3 on the year with the victory.

Roberts dominated the low blocks for the entire game, converting 14 of her 18 field goals attempted to finish just one point shy of her career-high mark of 32 points. She also pulled down eight rebounds and blocked three shots in the game. Her three rejections increased her career total to an even 200, making her the only Ladyjack to ever reach the milestone.

The Ladyjacks (4-3) also got great production form sophomore Taylor Ross and senior Brittney Matthew. Ross finished the game a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor to record 17 points and Matthew notched 14 points on6-for-11 shooting.

The trio of Roberts, Ross and Matthew combined for 62 points while shooting 75 percent (27-for-36). SFA shot nearly 64 percent as a team for a season-high effort.

Two big reasons for the efficient night offensively was the ability to score down low and in transition throughout the contest. SFA outscored TAMUK 62-12 in the paint and 39-5 in points off turnovers – both season-best margins for the Ladyjacks.

The Javelinas (0-6) hung right with the Ladyjacks for the first seven minutes of the game, as the score was even 21-21 at the 13:07 mark in the first half. SFA would get things going, however, mounting a 20-4 runover the next 10 minutes to go up 41-25. The squad took a 43-32 advantage into the break.

The Ladyjacks outmatched the Javelinas in the second half, outscoring the Hogs 47-18 in the period to secure the 40-point win. A layup by sophomore Adrienne Lewis with 45 seconds to play gave SFA its largest lead of the game at 90-48 but TAMUK converted a jumper just seconds later to make the final 90-50.

Senior Tierany Henderson led SFA with 10 rebounds on the evening and also chipped in five points. Victoria Pena, Charisma Alexander,Brentney Branch, Paulletta Powell and Lewis each scored four points for theLadyjacks.

Up next, SFA will head to Rice for a Saturday non-conference test in Houston. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.

Central Arkansas 62, Alcorn State 36
LORMAN, Miss. — After an 8-0 run late in the first half to take its first lead, Central Arkansas steadily pulled away in the second half as the Sugar Bears rolled to a 62-36 win at Alcorn State on Tuesday.

After trailing most of the first half, the Sugar Bears (3-3) assumed the lead with five minutes left in the period with eight straight free throws, taking a 30-21 lead into the locker room at the half. The Sugar Bears then held the Lady Braves (0-5) to just 16.1 percent shooting from the field in the second half to take control, improving to 3-0 all-time against ASU.

The 36 points was the lowest total allowed this season by the Sugar Bears, who have held three of their last four opponents to 45 points or less. The 26-point margin is also the Sugar Bears' largest since a 62-30 win over New Orleans on February 8.

After shooting just 54.5 percent from the free throw line in Saturday's loss to Jacksonville State, the Sugar Bears bounced back on Tuesday as they were nearly perfect – making 24 of 26 attempts (92.3 percent).

Though UCA shot just 29 percent in the first half, the Sugar Bears improved to 40 percent in the second half as they outscored the Lady Braves 32-15 after the break. Both teams struggled from the perimeter, with the Sugar Bears hitting 4 of 19 from 3-point range (21.1 percent) and the Lady Braves just 1 of 11 (9.1 percent).

The Sugar Bears were led by Kendara Watts' 17 points, while Brianna Mullins added 14 (all in the second half) plus a team-high 8 rebounds and 2 assists. Maggie Proffitt added 12 points for UCA. Henrietta Wells had 9 points to lead ASU, with Angelica Wilson-Reid grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.

UCA committed just 6 turnovers, the fewest for the Sugar Bears since a 71-51 win over Sam Houston State on Feb. 6, 2013 – a span of 41 games.

The Sugar Bears return home for two games this week, hosting Central Baptist at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Southeast Missouri State on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Southeastern would again put together a long defensive stand, as SLU held WCU scoreless for the next 9:16. The 18-0 run put Southeastern up, 54-27 with 6:49 left. The lead would grow to as much as 29 and the Lady Saders got no closer than 23 the rest of the way.
