McNeese State 67, Wiley College 66
LAKE CHARLES, La. — Two free throws with 11 seconds left in the game by junior guard Jayln Johnson proved to be the winning points in McNeese State's 67-66 non-conference women’s basketball victory over Wiley College Wednesday night.
Johnson led all players with 21 points including 9 of 12 from the free throw line. Johnson was nearly perfect from the field, canning 6 of 7 attempts. Baggett ended the game with 14 points and freshman Mercedes Rogers recorded a career high 10 rebounds.
McNeese trailed for most of the first half and took their first lead of the game with 6:50 to play. That lead didn’t stand for long as the Wildcats retook the lead for a short time. After a seventh tie of the half, Ann Nwosah’s layup with 2:55 left started a McNeese 6-0 run to give McNeese a 26-22 halftime lead.
The Cowgirls continued its offensive output to start the second half and outscored Wiley 16-6 in the first five minutes of the half to take a 44-30 lead. McNeese held its double-digit lead up until 10 minutes left to play. The Cowgirls allowed Wiley College to get back into the game, cutting the Cowgirl lead to 61-60 with 2:53 to play on a three-pointer by Kayla Brown. Brown gave the Wildcats a 62-61 lead on a jumper on their next possession. A jumper by Baggett on the Cowgirls’ next trip down the floor gave McNeese the lead again at 63-62. Both teams would trade baskets on their next possession.
With Wiley leading 66-65 with 14 seconds to play, Johnson was fouled; sending her to the line for what would be the game winning free throws. Wiley had a chance to win the game but turned the ball over with three seconds left.
McNeese will take a week off for finals and will host Centenary next Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Tulane 77, Nicholls 44
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Nicholls State University women’s basketball team’s shooting woes continued Wednesday as Tulane held the Colonels to 29 percent from the field for the night, handing Nicholls a 77-44 loss at Devlin Fieldhouse.
Nicholls (2-3) not only struggled shooting, but the Colonels were outrebounded 52-30 by Tulane, which improved its record to 6-1 on the year. The Green Wave also won their 14
th straight game against the Colonels, upping its record in the all-time series to 30-12.
The Colonels failed to have a scorer in double figures for the first time this season, but were led by Shay Arnick with nine points off the bench. Veronica Ryan added eight points and Jenny Nash had seven points and eight rebounds. Nicholls was without its leading scorer, Emani White, who missed the game with an injury.
Both defenses played well in the early going as Tulane led 10-9 after the first nine minutes. The Colonels saw their only lead of the game when Nash found Ekiya Gray for a layup off a screen-and-roll, giving Nicholls an 11-10 edge midway through the first half.
But the Green Wave regained the lead and pushed it to as much as 13 before going into the half with a 34-23 lead. Tulane took advantage of 13 turnovers in the period, turning them into 13 points.
Nash scored a bucket on the first possession to cut the deficit back to single digits, but it would be as close as the Colonels would get the rest of the way.
Nicholls shot only 15 percent from behind the arc, making just 1-of-12 in the second half. Tulane shot 45 percent from the field and was 6-of-18 from 3-point range.
Kolby Morgan led the Green Wave with 15 points, while Leslie Vorpahl and Chinwe Duru chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Nicholls will play its second home game of the season, hosting South Alabama on Saturday, Dec. 6 in the first game of a women’s/men’s basketball doubleheader. Tipoff at Stopher Gym is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Grand Canyon 59, New Orleans 57
PHOENIX, Ariz. – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (0-4) could not get a good look at a last shot as time expired and fell just short, losing 59-57 to the Grand Canyon Antelopes (2-4) on Wednesday night at the GCU Arena.
New Orleans fouled with 11.8 seconds remaining, sending Astrea Reed to the line. After draining the first, Reed missed the second free throw and the ball went out of bounds to New Orleans. With the ball and down two, the Privateers heaved up a three pointer from the right wing that missed, which ended the game.
Courtney Hayes drove to the hoop and converted a three-point play to break a tie game in Grand Canyon's favor at 58-55 with just over a minute remaining. Yasmin Taylor had a put back on a partially blocked three with 15.9 seconds left for the Privateers to make the score 58-57, setting up the final sequence.
The second half started in back-and-forth fashion as both teams saw extended time with narrow leads. After the second half started, there were eight lead changes in the first 12 minutes and no team led by more than three points in that span. Shortly after that, Casey Rarrick hit a left wing three and a layup on the next possession pushed the Antelopes lead to 49-41, forcing a Privateers timeout.
New Orleans came out of that timeout with six straight points to cut the deficit back down to two. The last bucket of that mini stretch was off a turnover and a converted 2-on-1 break finished by Randi Brown off an assist from Ariele Davis. The Privateers fought back to tie the game at 55-55 with 1:18 left.
Both teams began the game cold from the field as the first made field goal did not come until the 16:42 mark when Cheyenne Hedrington made a bucket in the paint. Both teams were a combined 1-for-8 from the field. New Orleans got on the board by virtue of a three-pointer from Octavia Wilson at the 15:44 mark.
The teams started to heat up as the half went on. Grand Canyon went on a spurt from behind the three-point line, hitting three straight triples in a near three-minute stretch to extend their first half lead to 20-15 with 7:10 left in the half. New Orleans had a strong close to the half though, led by back-to-back triples from Randi Brown to help vault the Privateers to a 26-25 halftime advantage.
Wilson led the Privateers with 15 points on the night. Halie Matthews added 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field. Taylor provided eight rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench along with seven points. Raven Coleman added five points and six rebounds for a Privateers squad that shot 45.8 percent from the field.
Grand Canyon was led by Hayes who posted 12 points and pulled in six rebounds while dishing two assists. Reed added nine points for the Antelopes who won despite being held to just 39.6 percent from the field. Hedrington, the WAC's leading rebounder was held to just three boards in 20 minutes of play after averaging 10.2 boards a game entering the night.
New Orleans returns home to face the Crowley's Ridge Pioneers on Saturday. Tip is slated for 4 p.m.

Texas Tech 61, Abilene Christian 41
LUBBOCK, Texas - Abilene Christian's women's basketball team dropped a 61-44 decision at Texas Tech Wednesday morning at the United Supermarkets Arena, in front of 6,447 screaming fans, a majority of them elementary school students attending the game as part of Lady Raider Education Day.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Wildcats, sending their record to 5-2, while the Lady Raiders improved to 5-2 and snapped a two-game losing skid. All five of Texas Tech's wins this season have come at home.
ACU clawed its way back from an early six-point deficit to tie the score at 18-18 at the 7:22 mark of the first half on a three-pointer by sophomore
Ellyn Avery. Unfortunately, that would be the final field goal the Wildcats would hit in the first half as Texas Tech took off on an 18-3 run to close the half, a run sparked by seven points from Amber Battle and a 3-pointer by Minta Spears. Rayven Brooks also sank a pair of first-half triples and went into the break with 10 points.
The Lady Raiders' defense, meanwhile, held the Wildcats to 28.0 percent shooting (3-14) from 3-point range and outrebounded them, 28-12, with 11 boards coming off the offensive glass.
ACU struggled with turnovers early in the second half as Texas Tech pushed its lead to 19 points before the Wildcats struck back with consecutive 3-pointers from Avery and sophomore
Sydney Shelstead, the latter of which was set up by an Avery offensive rebound.
ACU's 13-point deficit would be as close as the Wildcats would get the rest of the way. Following the Shelstead trey, Battle sank a layup that was assisted by Kelsi Baker on a bounce pass in the paint, and then Spears buried another three right after Jamie Roe missed a pair of free throws.
A layup from Baker made it a 20-point game and Dayo Olabode capped a Lady Raiders' 9-0 run at the 10:12 mark with one of her four field goals. Tech held onto its 20-point advantage until a pair of free throws by
Lizzy Dimba at the 2:09 mark made the score 56-37.
Lizzy Dimba led all Wildcats with 10 points and was 8-of-11 from the free throw line. Her sister, Suzzy, pulled down the most rebounds with eight and had one block to go along with three steals.
For the game, ACU shot 28.2 percent from the floor and made four field goals the entire second half - the treys by Avery and Parker, plus a pair of late layups by
Madison Parker and
Alexis Mason.
Texas Tech didn't have a great game offensively in shooting only 37.7 percent, but the Lady Raiders got five big 3-pointers from Spears, who led all players with 17 points. Battle -- in her first game back from a suspension -- finished with a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double and was 5 of 6 from the charity stripe.
The Wildcats are off from competition for the next 12 days because of Finals Week. They return to action Monday at 7 p.m. at Moody Coliseum vs. Southwestern Christian.

No. 5 Texas A&M 75, Northwestern State 42
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The early tipoff for Wednesday’s Elementary School Day women’s basketball game at Texas A&M did not faze Northwestern State.
The Lady Demons jumped out to a quick offensive start, but ultimately were unable to match the fifth-ranked Aggies superior size, falling to Texas A&M 75-42 in front of a crowd of 7,712 at Reed Arena.
The Lady Demons (4-2) started quickly, connecting on three of their first six field-goal attempts against the nation’s fifth-best field-goal percentage defense, taking their lone lead of the game on an Amy Staha 3-pointer with 17:27 to play in the first half.
After Staha’s basket, the Aggies (8-0) put together a 13-0 run sparked by six points from 6-foot-7 center Rachel Mitchell. Keisha Lee snapped the Lady Demons drought with a 3-pointer at the 12:54 mark.
Mitchell finished with eight points and was part of a sizeable Aggies front line that helped Texas A&M build a 28-10 advantage in points in the paint.
That first group included point guard Janelle Perez, who led NSU with nine points and handed out five assists in 29 turnover-free minutes, and senior forward Presley Owens, who spent the majority of her 26 minutes matched up against the Aggies front court that featured Mitchell, 6-5 Khaalia HIllsman (4 points, 6 rebounds) and 6-3 Jada Terry (9 points).
Point guard Jordan Jones paced the A&M offense with a double-double of 15 points and 10 assists, while Courtney Walker added 10 points for the Aggies.
Along with Perez, Lee had seven points while Staha and Owens each added six for NSU, which shot 27.6 percent (16-for-58) from the field and hit five of 31 3-point attempts.
Stoehr has said games at Power Five conference opponents like Texas A&M are teaching tools for her team.
Wednesday’s matchup, however, was the earliest tipoff (11 a.m.) of the season for NSU and came in a unique environment, one that was filled with approximately 4,400 school-age children.
Northwestern State continues its three-game, two-week road trip Saturday at 6 p.m. when they face Grambling State.
