HIGHLIGHTS

FRISCO, Texas – Lamar graduate students Sam Stabler and Louise Webb were named the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Year by a vote of the league’s head coaches, the conference announced Thursday.

Stabler, a native of Queniborough, England (Ratcliffe College), set a conference championship record in the mile with a time of 4:03.14 in the prelims, before winning the final in 4:10.61. The graduate student was also tabbed as the men’s outstanding runner. He claimed victories in the 3,000-meter run (8:21.69) and ran a leg of the record-setting distance medley relay. The Lamar quartet of Sean Guiney, Chance Williams, Aaron Bennett and Stabler won the event with a school-record time of 9:54:13. It also broke the 18-year old conference record by five seconds and set a new facility mark by three.

Along with being named the athlete of year, Webb was also named the women’s outstanding runner and newcomer of the year. The native of Southampton, England (Univ. of Southampton), won both the 800-meter run (2:13.68) and 3,000-meter run (10:03.05) and contributed on the first-place Lady Cardinals’ DMR (11:49.43). Webb is the first Lady Cardinal to win both athlete of the year and outstanding runner since Clerc Koenck did it in 2007-08.

McNeese State senior La’Shantena Rounds was tabbed the women’s outstanding field performer after she won the weight throw (67-feet) and finished third in the shot put (48-4). The Baton Rouge, La. (Southern Lab H.S.), native, became the first three-time champion in the weight throw since Stephen F. Austin Frednisha Marshall (2008-10).  Rounds is the first Cowgirl to qualify for NCAA Indoor Championships since 2005. She is ranked 14th in the country heading into the championships after a school-record heave of 68-feet, 9 inches she recorded at the McNeese Indoor III meet Feb. 15.

Southeastern Louisiana senior Jeff Milliron was named the men’s outstanding field performer after winning both the shot put and weight throw. The Cobleskill, N.Y. (Middleburgh H.S.), native, set a conference championship record in the weight throw with a toss of 66-10.50 to win the event. Millirons’ 20 points helped give the Lions their first indoor title in school history.

Sam Houston State’s Jay Roberson and Lamar’s Kayla de Bondt won the men’s and women’s freshman of the year awards.

Roberson, a Frankston, Texas (Robert E. Lee H.S.), native, accounted for 12 points for Sam Houston after finishing fourth in the heptathlon (4,820 points), fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.34) and sixth in the pole vault (15-01). He is the first Bearkat to win the award.

De Bondt, a native of Tarwin Lower, Australia (Deakin Univ.), scored 12.5 points for the Lamar after she won the mile-run (4:57.64) and teamed up with Belinda Aguilar, Saschelle Slaughter and Webb to help the Lady Cardinals win the DMR (11:49.43).

McNeese State junior Ryan Holroyd claimed the men’s newcomer of the year award. Holroyd, a native of  Staffordshire, England (Leek H.S.), is the third Cowboy to claim the honor, joining Brad Gebauer (2007) and Alex Bruce-Littlewood (2012). He finished second in the 5,000-meter run (14:56.26) and fifth in the 3,000-meter run (8:37.01).

Earning coach of the year honors were Southeastern Louisiana’s men’s coach Sean Brady and Sam Houston State’s women’s coach Dave Self. Brady won his first coach of the year award after leading the Lions to their first conference title. On the women’s side, Self earned his second coach of the year award after guiding the Bearkats to their third league title and first since 2008.

The top-three finishers in each event earned All-Southland Conference honors. The winner earned first-team honors, the second place finisher earned second-team accolades while third place finishers are honored with third-team awards.
