CONWAY, Ark. – The Sam Houston State women and the Southeastern Louisiana men claimed team titles at the 2014 Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships Sunday at the Bill Stephens Track Complex at the University of Central Arkansas. The wins give each squad a sweep of the conference’s indoor and outdoor championships in 2014.

The Bearkats won their fourth overall outdoor championship and first since 2008 and snapped a five-year win streak by rival Stephen F. Austin. For the Southeastern men, they add a second outdoor award to the trophy case to go with their title in 2009.

Sam Houston claimed a dominant 40.5-point victory in totaling 176 points during the three-day meet. SFA finished second with 135.5 points. Northwestern State scored 75 points in a third-place finish, while host Central Arkansas (67.5) and McNeese State (67) rounded out the top five women’s teams.

Southeastern earned its one-point win on the final event of the meet. Trailing only SFA entering the men’s 4x400-meter relay, the Lions needed to finish among the top-two teams, which would give them enough points for the victory. They finished second behind Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to earn eight points for a 157-156 victory. Sam Houston State finished third with 96 points, while Abilene Christian finished fourth with 63 points in its Southland debut. Lamar and Northwestern State tied for fifth, each totaling 57 points.

The Sam Houston women claimed five different events. Junior Lygia Foreman won the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.97 seconds. Senior Alyssa Dooley won the 1,500 meters (4:28.78). Senior Sabrina Starr won the 100 hurdles (13.19). Junior Kara Whitson won the pole vault (12-10). The Bearkats also won the 4x400 relay (3:41.08).

The Lions found themselves on the top of the podium four times, including wins by senior Jeff Milliron in the shot put and discus. He claimed the discus on Saturday with a toss of 178-8 and finished his career Sunday with a toss of 58-5.75 in the shot put. Junior Derek Hampton won the javelin with a toss of 223-8. The other win came on the track, with senior Abram Taylor winning the 110 hurdles in a time of 14.13.

Joining Milliron as the only double-event winners in the meet was Northwestern State senior Justin Walker, who won both the 100 and 200 meters. He ran the fastest time in the world this season, breaking the tape in only 9.95 seconds though he was aided by a 2.5 wind reading. He won the 200 with a time of 20.47.

Sam Houston’s Foreman and McNeese State senior Jasmine Webb shared honors as the meet’s top women’s scorers. Each scored 20.5 points. Southeastern senior Jeff Milliron scored 25 points to lead all men’s scorers.

The full list of all-conference teams and individual award winners will be announced Thursday, but the top three finishers in each event earn a spot on the all-conference team. All winners earn first-team honors, while second- and third-place finishers earn second- and third-team honors, respectively.

NCAA regionals will be held May 29-31 at either Jacksonville, Fla. (East) or Fayetteville, Ark. (West). Individuals will find out about their acceptance into a regional Thursday, May 22. The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore.
