Stabler and Ockenden Selected Cross Country Athletes of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Lamar senior runner Sam Stabler and junior Verity Ockenden were named Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Athletes of the week, the league announced Tuesday.
Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week – Sam Stabler, Lamar
Stabler posted the second-best collegiate time on Saturday at the 39th Annual Justin F. Cooper Memorial Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas. The Leicester, England (Ratcliffe College), native’s time of 17:02 in the 5,620-meter race enabled him to be the conference’s top finisher at the meet. Stabler competed against runners from 13 different schools including McNeese State, Houston, Texas State, LSU, Stephen F. Austin, Houston Baptist, Sam Houston State, Prairie View, Texas A&M-International, Northwestern State, Nicholls and host Rice.

Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week – Verity Ockenden, Lamar
Ockenden recorded a time of 13:36 to finish fourth overall in the women’s event at the 39th Annual Just F. Cooper Memorial Rice Invitational this weekend. The Shaftesbury, England (Swansea University), native was the Southland’s top finisher in the 3,950-meter race. Leading her team to a fourth place finish among 14 teams, Ockenden competed against runners from Stephen F. Austin, LSU, Houston, Texas State, McNeese State, Houston Baptist, Northwestern State, Texas A&M-International, UT-Brownsville, Nicholls, Texas Southern, Prairie View and host Rice.

Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors
