The Lady Cardinals (8-9, 5-1) set a school record and tied a conference record by draining 18 3-pointers as they moved into first place in the conference, handing the Lady Demons (10-7, 5-1) their first SLC loss of the season.

Houston Baptist 63, New Orleans 45
HOUSTON, Texas – For the second time in as many games, Houston Baptist used a smothering defense, holding visiting New Orleans to just 33 percent shooting, while four Huskies – led by junior forward Anna Strickland’s double-double – scored in double figures, as HBU defeated the Privateers, 63-45.
Strickland paced HBU (8-9 overall, 2-4 SLC) with her second double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. She posted game highs of three rebounds and five assists, one shy of tying her career mark of six set against Huston-Tillotson last month. Erin McGarrachan led the Huskies with 14 points, while also pulling down seven rebounds. Tayler Jefferson and Monet Neal came off the bench to score 13 and 12 points, respectively. Neal tied her career high of four assists.
Jewel Angelo came off the bench to tie the game high of 14 points to lead New Orleans (2-12 overall, 0-5 SLC). Yasmin Taylor had a big game for the Privateers, posting seven points and team highs of eight rebounds and four steals.
HBU scored the first four points of the game, but New Orleans battled back and forced four ties in a span of three minutes. Angelo’s jumper at the 10:05-mark knotted the contest at 10-all, but, unfortunately for the Privateers, that was the last basket they would make for the next 9:50, as HBU outscored UNO, 17-1, before Taylor’s layup with 55 seconds remaining in the opening half. A steal by Meghan Shank resulting in a t here-pointer by Jefferson capped a 17-0 run and forced UNO to take a timeout. The Huskies led New Orleans, 27-13, at the break. It was the second-fewest points allowed by HBU in a half this season and the fewest against a Division I opponent.
Neal led all scorers with eight points, while McGarrachan had six points and four rebounds. Strickland had six boards and four points. Halie Matthews and Angelo led UNO with four points apiece. HBU shot 45 percent from the floor compared to 27 percent for the Privateers.
New Orleans began the second half hitting back-to-back jumpers to cut the deficit to 10, 27-17, but HBU scored seven-straight points to bring the lead back up to 34-17 with 16:15 to go in regulation. Jefferson had three steals in the run. Following a made free throw, Jefferson stole the in-bounds pass, made the layup and the ensuing free throw. She then had another steal which resulted in two Strickland free throws.
The Privateers cut the deficit to 14 following a three-point play by Taylor, but HBU used a 17-8 run to take its largest lead of the game at 51-28 with just under seven minutes to go in the game.
UNO tried to come back, but never came as close as 17 points the rest of the way.
Jefferson and Angelo led their respective teams with 10 points apiece in the second half. McGarrachan added eight points for HBU, while Randi Brown chipped in with nine for UNO. The Huskies shot 50 percent in the second half and 47 percent in the game, while UNO shot 38 percent in the second half and 32 percent in the contest.
HBU hosts Lamar next Saturday, Jan. 24 at 4 pm, before concluding its four-game home stand against Abilene Christian Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7 pm.

Stephen F. Austin 71, Abilene Christian 69 (OT)
ABILENE, Texas – Porsha Roberts tied the game with a late free throw and scored six of her game-high 25 points in the overtime period to help the Stephen F. Austin women’s basketball team edge Abilene Christian 71-69 on Saturday afternoon in Moody Coliseum. The OT victory is the second for the Ladyjacks in Southland Conference play already this year. SFA beat Southeastern Louisiana 78-71 in William R. Johnson Coliseum two weeks prior to Saturday’s game.
Trailing 64-63 with three seconds left in regulation, Roberts hauled in an offensive rebound and drew a foul to get to the free throw line. She was able to connect on the second shot to force overtime – finishing a late rally by the Ladyjacks (11-5, 4-1 SLC). In overtime, Roberts went 3-for-4 from the field, scored six of SFA’s seven points and brought in four rebounds.
The Ladyjack defense did the rest, limiting the Wildcats (8-7, 1-4 SLC) to 1-for-7 shooting from the floor in the extra period as SFA outscored ACU 7-5 to create separation for the 71-69 win.
Roberts ended the game with 25 points on 10-for-11 shooting. She grabbed 13 rebounds to complete her eighth double-double of the season and rejected three shots. The senior center did a lot of damage despite only playing nine minutes in the first half due to foul trouble.
Ross tallied 18 points while firing at a 6-for-15 clip and getting five of seven free throw attempts to go on the afternoon. She played a huge role defensively, especially down the stretch, swiping seven steals with many coming in key possessions late in the game.
The Ladyjacks went on a 12-3 spurt midway through the first half to build their largest lead of the game, 19-13, with 7:25 before the intermission. The two squads battled within a small window over the final minutes before ACU converted a late layup to take a 30-27 advantage into the locker rooms.
Sophomore guard Brentney Branch led all Ladyjacks with nine points at halftime. She hit a pair of three-pointers on seven attempts and would finish the game with the same point total.
In a game which saw 13 lead changes and nine ties, the scoring margin stayed within seven points in the second half. The Wildcats built their largest lead of the game with 8:01 to play at 53-46, but thanks to great defense led by Ross and efficient offense headed by Roberts, the Ladyjacks were able to chip away at the lead.
Senior Brittney Matthew and junior Paulletta Powell each chipped in seven points for SFA in the contest. Both Ladyjacks also did a great job on the defensive end, helping SFA limit ACU to a 32.8 field goal percentage as a team.
The Ladyjacks will continue on their current road stretch with games at Lamar and Sam Houston State next week. SFA plays Lamar on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. before facing the Bearkats on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 75, Nicholls 59
THIBODAUX, La. - Four Islanders scored in double-figures as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team knocked off Nicholls, 75-59, at Stopher Gym Saturday afternoon.
Leading the charge for the Islanders (7-9, 3-2 SLC) was senior
Olivia Fouty, who scored a game-high 20 points on her way to a new career-high.
The Toledo, Ohio native also grabbed seven rebounds in the win. Junior
Shay Weaver added 16 points and three assists while
Kassie Jones put in 15 points and a team-high four assists. Sophomore
Camesha Davis recorded her fourth double-double of the year with a 12 point and 11 rebound performance.
The Islanders shot an 53.7 percent from the field over the course of the game and were able to capitalize on the Colonels full-court press, making quick passes on their way to 14 fast-break points in the game. AMCC was able to use its size advantage throughout the game, scoring 40 of its 75 points in the paint, while also turning their 13 offensive boards into 11 points.
When the Islanders needed it most, the team delivered from behind the arc. AMCC shot 42.9 percent (6-14) in the game, with C. Davis, Weaver and Fouty hitting two apiece.
Marina Lilly led the way for Nicholls (7-9, 3-2 SLC) with 12 points, while Ekiya Gray added 11 points.
Although the box scored showed five ties and four lead changes in the opening frame, it was a different story on the court. The Islanders and Colonels each combined for three runs of seven points or more, which dominated the first half.
After
Jennifer Ramirez scored off the opening tip, Nicholls reeled off seven-straight points to take an early 7-2 lead. The Islanders didn't stray from what has kept them in games this year though, connecting on 3-pointers in consecutive possessions; one by C. Davis and another by the team's leading outside marksman, Weaver.
The Colonels' capitalized off the Islanders' errant passes, turning the miscues into a 10-0 run to lead 22-12 before freshman
Ashley James entered the game and drew free throws, breaking NSU run.
That was when the Islanders defense turned up the intensity and started clicking on all cylinders during a 12-0 run of their own. James' defensive presence was felt throughout the run, as she suffocated the Colonels' guards, energizing the Islanders in the process. Weaver and C. Davis each scored four points in the stretch, with four of the five buckets coming off assists.
The Islanders held the Colonels to 28.6 percent from the floor in the first half, even though NSU took 11 more shots thanks to their ability to create turnovers. The Islanders shot 50 percent in the half (12-24), scoring 18 of their 28 in the paint. A&M-Corpus Christi took a 28-24 lead headed into the locker room.
A&M-Corpus Christi returns to the road Jan. 22 when they head to Southeast Louisiana, then to New Orleans on Jan. 24.
