McNeese State 104, UIW 101 (2OT)

SAN ANTONIO, Texas—McNeese State women’s basketball held on for a 104-101 double overtime thrilling win over UIW Thursday.

In a game that saw several ties and lead , it was a tale of two halves in regulation that sent the game to not one overtime, but two.  The 104 points scord by the Cowgirls is the first time McNeese hit the century mark since McNeese defeated Texas College during the 2010-11 season.

McNeese had three players record double doubles and five players scored in double figures. Allison Baggett and Jayln Johnson lead all players with 25 apiece.  Baggett was 11 of 24 from the field and Johnson was 7 of 20 including 9-12 from the free throw line.  Talisa Boyd recorded her second career double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Johnson also recorded a double-double by dishing out 10 assists. Mercedes Rogers recorded her first career double double with a career high 10 points, tying her career high with 10 rebounds. Amber Donnes ended the game with 10 points.

McNeese used a full-court press and solid defense and shot the ball extremely well in the first half to go into the locker room with a 53-44 halftime lead.

The Cowgirls held leads of seven points a few times during the first half, but the shooting by the Cowgirls from behind the arc would push the Cowgirls’ lead to its largest lead of the game of 11, which would be the halftime score.

What got the Cowgirls their halftime lead wasn’t present in the second half as UIW outscored the Cowgirls 40-31 in the second half and outrebounded McNeese 29-11. UIW began the second half on an 11-2 run to take a 55-51 lead but McNeese came back to take a 69-68 lead with 7:48 left in regulation.  The second half consisted of 11 ties.

With the Cowgirls trailing 84-82 with 35 seconds left in the game, Johnson made a layup with 27 seconds left to tie the game.  UIW had a chance to win the game but Aricka Adams missed a jumper with four seconds. UIW got the offensive rebound but was unable to get a shot off as time expired, sending the game into overtime.

In the first overtime, the Cowgirls fought off a four-point deficit twice with the last one coming with 1:15 left.  With UIW leading 93-89, McNeese’s Jasmyn Carswell scored her only two points of the game to cut the lead to 93-91.  McNeese caused UIW into a turnover but Baggett miss a jumper that would have tied the game. In an attempt to get the rebound, the ball went out on the Cowgirls.

McNeese fouled Haley Frias on the next trip down the floor, sending her to the line for two free throws. Frias missed both free throws and Johnson took the ball the length of the court and made a layup to send the game into a second overtime.

McNeese opened the second overtime on a 6-2 run to take a 99-95 lead .  McNeese would then take a five point lead (103-98) on back to back Baggett buckets with 1:24 left.  UIW would cut the Cowgirl lead to two points (103-101) on a three-pointer by Frias with 1:07 left.  The Cardinals had a chance to tie the game but Quincey Baker missed two free throws and Rogers picks up the rebound off the second miss and is fouled.  Rogers makes the second of two free throws to give McNeese the 104-101 win.

McNeese (10-7, 4-2 SLC) will continue its road trip and will travel to Natchitoches on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game at Northwestern State.

Sam Houston State 63, Abilene Christian 58
Abilene, Texas – Junior guard Shernise Robertson scored 28 points to lead Sam Houston to a 63-58 Southland Conference women’s basketball victory over Abilene Christian Thursday at Moody Coliseum.

The Bearkats, now 4-13 for the year and 3-4 in Southland play, trailed 58-51 with 1:39 to play. But the SHSU women outscored the Wildcats 12-0 in the final minute-and-a-half. Robertson accounted for 10 of those points with a pair of three pointers and four free throws.

Abilene Christian drops to 8-8 for the season and 1-5 in league action. The Wildcats were led by Whitney West with 23 points.

The contest saw nine ties and 15 lead changes with Abilene Christian leading for more than 23 minutes.

After Robertson had given Sam Houston a 45-43 lead with 6:31 to play, Abilene Christian went on a 15-6 run to go up 58-51.

Robertson started the comeback with threes at the 1:29 and 1:12 mark and Taylor Dorsey, who totaled 10 points for Sam Houston, hit a two-pointer after an ACU turnover for the go-ahead basket.
Robertson rebounded a missed three pointer by ACU and scored on two free throws. Then the Bearkat defense forced a backcourt 10-second violation to set up another pair of free throws to ice the victory.

The Bearkats had their best shooting night of the year, hitting 46.7 percent from the field (21-of-45). The SHSU women also had a strong defensive effort, limiting ACU to 33 percent shooting (20-of-60). The Wildcats took 32 three point shots but made only 10.

The Wildcats got off to a fast start, building a 12-2 lead in the first four minutes. But Sam Houston fought back with a 14-1 run to go in front 16-13 after a Morghen Day three-point at the 10:52 mark.
The two teams exchanged leads four more times in the opening half. Robertson sank a three-pointer three seconds before the halftime buzzer to give the SHSU women a 29-27 lead at intermission.

Day scored eight points for Sam Houston. Sherdijah Moore led the Bearkats on the boards with eight rebounds.

Stephen F. Austin 59, Lamar 55
BEAUMONT, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women’s basketball team jumped out to a quick 21-point lead in the first half and held off a late push by Lamar to win 59-55 inside the Montagne Center on Thursday night. The victory is the fifth straight for the Ladyjacks (12-5, 5-1 SLC).

SFA got off to a fast start thanks to suffocating defense and big first half performances from Porsha Roberts and Taylor Ross. The Ladyjacks held the Lady Cardinals (8-10, 5-2 SLC) to just 28.6 percent shooting in the opening period, including a 1-for-10 mark from beyond the arc.

Roberts and Ross combined for 24 of the Ladyjacks’ 36 first half points as SFA was in complete control for the first 16 minutes of the game. With SFA in front 12-7, Roberts and Ross helped lead a 22-6 run over a nine-minute span to put the Ladyjacks up 34-13 with 4:17 to play in the half. The 21-point margin was the largest of the game for either side.

The Lady Cardinals would chip away at that lead over the remainder of the half, however, using a 12-2 spurt to close the gap and head to the locker room trailing 36-25.

The Ladyjacks went without a basket for over five minutes at the end of the first half and beginning of the second, as Lamar crept back into the game. The Lady Cardinals grabbed their first lead, 47-45, with 8:35 to go. Just as in the game against Abilene Christian, SFA’s defense tightened and players stepped up with big time shots down the stretch to regain the lead.

Senior Tierany Henderson drilled two three-pointers in a three-minute window to give SFA some breathing room and Ross and Charisma Alexander knocked down two shots late. Alexander finished with a career-high eight points on 4-for-7 shooting.

Roberts came two rebounds away from her fifth double-double in six games as she tallied 16 points and eight boards. The Waco native was a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor and has now made 17 of her last 18 shots spanning the last two contests.

Ross also added 16 points to the Ladyjacks’ cause and took in nine rebounds – a season-high total. She led SFA with four assists on the evening.

SFA shot the ball at a 42.9 percent clip for the game to improve to 11-2 when surpassing 40 percent shooting. Lamar made just 32.2 percent of its shots, 10 of which were denied due to an SFA block.

Roberts (6) and Henderson (4) combined to give the Ladyjacks a season-high number of rejections.
While the Lady Cardinal full court press gave the Ladyjacks problems at times, SFA more than made up for it by dominating the paint. Thanks to a strong presence by Roberts and Adrienne Lewis, the Ladyjacks outscored the Lady Cardinals 40-20 in the lane. Lewis scored four points and tied a career-high with six rebounds.

After dropping in three triples, Henderson ended the night with nine points.
The Ladyjacks will finish their current three-game road stretch on Saturday afternoon against Sam Houston State in Huntsville. Tip is set for 1:30 p.m. for the front end of a men/women double-header.
