UTSA 6, UIW 1
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word women's tennis team fell to UTSA in a local derby at the UTSA Tennis Center. The Roadrunners opened their home schedule with a 6-1 win on Friday afternoon.

The Cardinals (0-3) were back in San Antonio this weekend, but not at the Mabry Tennis Center. Instead they headed to the campus of UTSA on Friday to play the Roadrunners (2-1) in a fixture that was originally scheduled for Saturday.

The Roadrunners coasted to earn the first point of the day in doubles action with Daniela Garcia-Diaz and Sonia Madroñal Medina defeating Sarah Savedra and Taryn Strahl 6-3 at the second position and Lana Hallgren and Alina Shichkova defeating Antea Dedic and Malisa Vatanadilok 6-1 at the third position.

In the singles matches, a highlight for the Cardinals came from freshman Rachel Sadiq who won at the #1 position against Jacobea Junger. After dropping the first set 3-6, Sadiq went on to take the second, 6-4 and the third, 11-9 in a thrilling tie break.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the Roadrunners went on to dominate the rest of the matches winning the final five singles contests in straight sets.

The Cardinals remain on the road and finish the weekend at Baylor. They play the Bears on Sunday at 6 p.m.

SMU 7, Sam Houston State 0
DALLAS, Texas – SMU defeated Sam Houston 7-0 in a non-conference women’s tennis match Friday at the SMU Tennis Center in Dallas.

But Bearkat coach saw improved play from his young 2015 Bearkat squad in the five days since the squad’s season opening loss to UT-Pan American Sunday.

“We played so much better today than last Sunday,” Giachino said. “We were much stronger mentally and played much more tactical tennis on all courts. It’s never fun to lose but the team’s growth in just one week was excellent.”

Senior Karen Martinez split sets at number five singles with Mary Wright, forcing a super tiebreaker to decide the winner. Wright won 7-5 4-6 1-0 (10-5).

The Kats’ other senior Olivia Battye took SMU’s No. 1 player Hristina Dishkova to 7-5 in the first set before dropping the second set 6-1.

The contest was the opening match of the year for SMU as the Mustangs extended their series record with Sam Houston in women’s tennis to 5-0.

The Bearkats will return to action Friday February 6 with a 1 p.m. dual match against Texas-San Antonio at the McAdams Tennis Center in Huntsville.
