THIBODAUX, La. – Needing only seven points to reach 1,000 for her career, senior Jenny Nash surpassed the mark with three early 3-pointers as the Nicholls State University women’s basketball team made eight from long range in the first half to build a 25-point lead and the Colonels went on to cruise to a lopsided 67-34 victory over Incarnate Word on Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gym.
Nash, who became the 12
th Colonel in program history to reach the 1000-point plateau, led all scorers with a game-high 14 points. She finished 4 of 7 from 3-point range as the team made a blistering 64.7 percent from behind the arc, knocking down 11 of 17. Taylor Morrison also had two 3-pointers and scored 12 points off the bench while Shay Arnick chipped in with 11 points.
The win was the third consecutive victory for Nicholls (10-10, 6-3 SLC), which improved to 6-2 at home. The Colonels shot over 50 percent from the field for the second time in the last three games, and held the opposition under 27 percent shooting for the second straight outing. UIW (5-14, 2-6 SLC), which dressed only seven players in the loss, hit just 14 of 52 from the field. Melina Marritt led UIW with 11 points.
The Colonels came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, using four 3-pointers to take a 16-4 lead after six minutes of play. After six straight points by the Cardinals, Nash broke the 1,000-point mark with her third 3-pointer of the game, which gave Nicholls a 19-10 lead with 11 minutes until intermission. Nicholls would then blow the contest open, outscoring Incarnate Word 18-2 for the rest of the half for a 37-12 lead.
The Cardinals made just 4 of 25 from the field in the first 20 minutes and had 10 turnovers. While Nicholls had one of its best shooting performances in the first half, the Colonels turned the ball over 10 times and finished the game with 26.
In the second half, things did not fare much better for the visitors with the Red and Gray maintaining at least a 24-point lead throughout.
Nicholls will return the trip to Incarnate Word on Wednesday, Feb. 4, taking on UIW in San Antonio. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Stephen F. Austin 64, A&M-Corpus Christi 55
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women’s basketball team forced a season-high 27 turnovers and got double digit scoring efforts from three players to come away with a 64-55 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon inside William R. Johnson Coliseum. The win is the ninth straight for the Ladyjacks at home and the 15th straight over the Islanders in the all-time series dating back to the 2004-05 season.
Taylor Ross led the defensive effort for the Ladyjacks (13-6, 6-2 SLC), tying a career-high with seven steals and rejecting two shots.
Brittney Matthew also helped apply the pressure with five steals in 28 minutes. The Islanders (10-10, 6-3 SLC) shot 20 fewer shots than the Ladyjacks in the game due in large part to the swarming SFA defense.
Ross also had a big night offensively, leading SFA with 19 points on 5-for-12 shooting. She knocked down 8 of 11 shots from the free throw line on the afternoon.
Porsha Roberts and
Tierany Henderson also reached double figures with 12 points apiece. Henderson drilled three triples on seven looks from deep and Roberts went 5-for-10 from the field.
Against one of the best rebounding teams in the nation, SFA played AMCC even on the glass as each team grabbed 34 boards. Roberts came one rebound shy of a double-double with nine while freshman
Charisma Alexander collected a season-high eight rebounds, including four off the offensive glass.
In a low scoring start to Saturday’s contest, Corpus Christi held a 17-13 edge with 7:06 to play in the opening period. Ross would help spark a big SFA run to end the half, however, converting a three-point play and hitting three more consecutive free throws to give the Ladyjacks a 19-17 lead. SFA went on a 17-2 run to end the frame overall and took a 30-19 advantage with them into the locker room. Ross had 10 points alone in the seven minute span.
The Islanders wouldn’t come closer than eight points the rest of the way as the Ladyjacks cruised to the 64-55 victory, leading by as many as 18 in the final 20 minutes.
Matthew and Henderson led SFA with four assists in the game and Matthew chipped in eight points to complement the offensive effort.
Paulletta Powell ended the day with five points while Alexander and
Adrienne Lewis each contributed four.
The Ladyjacks will next hit the road to Natchitoches, La. on Thursday, Feb. 5 to face Northwestern State. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.

Sam Houston State 74, Houston Baptist 67
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Led by Shernise Robertson who totaled 28 points, the Sam Houston women’s basketball team rallied from 16 points down to earn a 74-67 Southland Conference victory over Houston Baptist Saturday afternoon at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The Bearkats upped their season mark to 6-14 and stand 5-5 in Southland Conference play. HBU dropped to 8-12 for the year and 2-7 in the league.
Robertson, the league’s leading scorer, hit 5-of-10 from the field and 16-of-17 from the line to post her seventh consecutive game with 20 or more points.
Taylor Dorsey added 22 for Sam Houston. Tayler Jefferson and Anna Strickland led the Huskies with 21 and 20 points, respectively.
Making on two field goals in the first 15 minutes of the first half to hit only 22 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, the Bearkats trailed 36-25 at halftime and were down 44-28 with 16:21 to play.
The Bearkats went on a 10-0 run to cut the margin to 44-38 with 13:36 to play. Dorsey scored the go-ahead basket on a layup with 6:58 to play and the Kats never trailed again.
Sam Houston hit 57.7 per cent in the second half.

Lamar 76, Abilene Christian 72
BEAUMONT, Texas – When the heat got intense, Baileigh O’Dell was one cool customer.
The Lamar freshman hit two free throws with 33.1 seconds remaining in regulation to snap a 72-72 tie and propel the Lamar Lady Cardinals to a 76-72 win over Abilene Christian in a Southland Conference women’s basketball game Saturday.
O’Dell had a team-high 20 points, including a 4-of-4 effort from the foul line as Lamar (11-10 overall, 8-2 Southland) moved into sole possession of first place in the Southland Conference, one game ahead of Stephen F. Austin and Northwestern State. O’Dell also tied a career high with five assists.
After O’Dell’s two free throws, Abilene Christian (11-9, 3-6) missed two 3-pointers that would have given the Wildcats the lead. Lamar’s Dominique Edwards grabbed the rebound after a missed trey by Ellyn Avery and sank two free throws that sealed the win.
Edwards finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season and 20
th of her career. JaMeisha Edwards had 18 points, 16 after intermission as the Lady Cardinals rallied from a 41-38 halftime deficit.
Suzzy Dimba had a double-double for Abilene Christian, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Sydney Shelstead added 20 points for the Wildcats.
Both teams were perfect from the foul line for the game, as Lamar was 15-of-15, while Abilene Christian was 12-of-12.
Lamar returns to action at 7 p.m. Thursday when it travels to Abilene for a rematch with the Wildcats to open a two-game road trip. The Lady Cardinals are at Incarnate Word at 5 p.m. Feb. 7. Lamar’s net home game is 7 p.m. Feb. 12 against Houston Baptist in the annual Pink Out game to promote breast-cancer awareness.

McNeese State 82, New Orleans 58
LAKE CHARLES, La. —McNeese women’s basketball team made a season high 11 three-pointers and Allison Baggett made a career high seven in the Cowgirls’ 82-58 win over New Orleans Saturday.
Baggett scored a game high 25 points with 19 coming in the first half. Baggett scorched the nets in the first half, connecting on 6 of 9 from the field including 5 of 7 from 3-point range.
Three other Cowgirls scored in double figures with Amber Donnes chipping in 15. Donnes was 6 of 8 from the field and made 3 of 5 three-pointers.
Talisa Boyd picked up her third double-double in the last four games with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Boyd ended the game with eight defensive rebounds.
Jayln Johnson scored 12 points and dished out a game high eight assist.
McNeese (12-8, 6-3 SLC) set the tone early in the game by scoring the first 10 points including two straight three’s by Baggett and Donnes. UNO scored its first points of the game on a layup by Yasmin Taylor, six minutes into the game.
The Cowgirls continued its hot shooting from the outside and held a 20 point lead (41-21) with five minutes left in the half. The Cowgirls went into the locker room at the break holding a 51-29 lead.
After producing its best half of the season in the second half against Southeastern La. on Thursday, the Cowgirls bettered that half by shooting 60 percent and also 60 percent from three-point. The Cowgirls were 9 of 15 from behind the arc in the second half.
In the second half, the Cowgirls built on their lead by opening the second half on a 7-2 run to take a 27-point lead with 16:41 to play. McNeese held its largest lead of the game, 28 points with 9:07 left.
McNeese’s defense held UNO to 30.6 shooting on the day and outrebounded UNO 43-34.
UNO’s Halie Matthews led the Privateers with 14 points and six rebounds. Jewel Angelo added 11 points.
