Sam Houston State 1, Stephen F. Austin 0
HUNSVILLE, Texas – The Sam Houston State soccer squad, highlighted by the senior class, has made their mark on the program record book in recent memory. On Friday night, they etched their names one more time, downing Stephen F. Austin, 1-0 at Pritchett Field.

The win snapped the Ladyjacks (9-7-2 overall, 8-1-2 Southland) 32-match unbeaten streak, the longest in the country, and provided the Bearkats their first victory against the in-state rival since 2010.

In the 69th minute, Mariah Titus lined up for a free kick on the left sideline, perfectly firing a ball into Jordan Jarzombek, who put a left-footed shot into the back of the net from just inside the far post.

Sam Houston (8-6-3 overall, 5-3-2 SLC) held the Ladyjacks to just one shot in the first half, which came four minutes into the match.

The Bearkats took five first-half shots including a ball fired in from Ashley Alonzo in the 35th minute from the top of the box, forcing Ladyjacks’ keeper Lillie Ehlert to lunge to her left for the save.

Twelve minutes into the second half, Mariah Titus sent in a corner for Maya Van Londen headed toward the near post where Kylie Dick took a shot on goal, cleared off the line by an SFA defender.

SFA had a pair of opportunities in the 57th minute when the Ladyjacks’ right back sent a ball to the left flank and Rachel Owens, left alone on the left side, took a crack that was deflected by Hambleton, ricocheting to Hanna Barker whose attempt was also saved.

Sam Houston tallied 10 shots, including six on goal and held SFA to five shots and three on goal. The Bearkats flexed their muscle defensively as senior goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton logged three saves.

The Bearkats await their fate to see whether a game at Incarnate Word, which was cancelled on Tuesday, will be necessary to determine seeding in next week’s Southland Conference Tournament in Conway, Ark.

HOUSTON, Texas – Junior midfielder Allison Abendschein’s goal nine minutes into the match was all that was needed as HBU women’s soccer defeated visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 1-0, Friday afternoon.

Abendschein netted her third goal of the season to lead HBU (10-6-1 overall, 8-3-0 SLC), while Sabriah Spencer registered an assist, as she has had a point in seven of the last eight matches. HBU outshot the Islanders, 12-5, in the match, as Ellee Hall, Kristi O’Brien, and Gabby Rodriguez had three shots apiece. Alanis Guevara and Katie Turner split time in goal and combined for one save for the Huskies’ fifth shutout of the season.

Lamar 1, McNeese State 0
LAKE CHARLES, La. – Lauren Lovejoy made 12 saves to backstop the Lamar Cardinals to a 1-0 win over host McNeese State in a Southland Conference women’s soccer game Friday night.

It was a bittersweet win for the Cardinals (8-11-1 overall, 4-6-1 Southland), who lost out on a tiebreaker to Central Arkansas for the final berth in next week’s Southland Conference Tournament. Both teams ended up with 13 points, but Central Arkansas held the tiebreaker by virtue of its victory over the Cardinals this season. The Bears secured the final spot with a 3-1 win at Northwestern State on Friday.

Lovejoy finished the season with a school-record 162 saves, picking up her second shutout of the season in the process. The sophomore Netminder made six saves in each half Friday.

The Cardinals scored the game’s only goal 10:21 into the second half. Juliana Ocampo’s shot ricocheted off the post to a pair of McNeese defenders who failed to clear the ball. M.J. Eckart pounced on the loose sphere and slammed it into the back of the net behind McNeese State goalkeeper Lauren Sestak for her third goal of the season.

After that, it was up to Lovejoy and the LU defense to keep McNeese State (6-11-0, 3-8-0) off the board.

The Cardinals did a good job of controlling territorial play, taking eight corner kicks, while the Cowgirls had none.

Friday’s game was the final one in an LU uniform for the Cardinals’ four seniors (Morgan Burden, Megan Campbell, Jannet Hernandez and Mari Olastuen).

Central Arkansas 3, Northwestern State 1

Natchitoches, La. – The Central Arkansas women’s soccer team took to the field at the Demon Soccer Complex at Northwestern State University knowing exactly what they needed to do on Friday night.

Following Nicholls’ 2-1 loss to Southeastern Louisiana earlier in the day, Jeremy Bishop’s Bears knew that all that stood between them and the program’s first Southland Conference Tournament bid since 2012 was a win over the Lady Demons. The Bears answered the call, taking down the Lady Demons 3-1 to earn the sixth seed in next week’s Southland Conference Tournament.

Central Arkansas (7-11-1, 4-6-1 SLC) got on the board in just the eight minute, as junior Shelby Wilson played a long ball forward to freshman Ashley Smith, who caught Northwestern State keeper Brooke Bourbonais in no-man’s land before chipping the ball over her from the top-left corner of the box for her fifth goal of the season and a 1-0 Central Arkansas lead.

Fellow freshman Camille Bassett added to the Bears’ lead in the 25th minute, collecting a ball out wide from sophomore Alex Moore and dribbling into the box before finishing near-post for her 10th goal of the year.

Northwestern (5-10-4, 2-5-3 SLC) cut into the Central Arkansas lead in the 52nd minute, when Camila Ardila fired a shot that was saved by UCA keeper Anna Hughes. Sage Leffew pounced on the rebound slamming it home to cut the Bears’ lead to 2-1.

Bassett added an insurance goal in the 61st minute, receiving a pass from Smith on a breakaway and winning the one-on-one with Lady Demon Keeper Alex Latham to make it 3-1 in favor of the Bears.

On the night, Central Arkansas put eight of its 16 shots on goal, led by Bassett, who was on target with three of her six shots. Smith put two shots on frame, while Wilson, Kate Koch, and Allie Coleman all added one shot on goal. Anna Hughes made three saves in goal for Central Arkansas.
