FRISCO, Texas – Northwestern State senior guard Jalan West has been named the Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league office announced Monday.
   
West scored 25 points while dishing out six assists and grabbing three rebounds in Northwestern State’s 90-76 loss to Ole Miss. The senior from Bossier City, La., (Bossier H.S.), scored 24 of his points in the second half, going 8-for-10 on field goals and 6-for-7 from behind the arc, including hitting seven straight shots in the final 20 minutes. For the game, West shot 61.5 percent (8-for-13) from the field and 60 percent (6-for-10) from 3-point range in the Demons’ season opener.
   
Honorable mention this week goes to Central Arkansas junior guard Derreck Brooks, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior forward Rashawn Thomas and McNeese State junior guard Jamaya Burr.
   
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
