CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team kicked off the 2015 season, defeating Saint Peter's University, 6-4, at Chapman Field Friday night. Travis Geiser lifted the club in the seventh inning with a bases-clearing triple in his first collegiate at bat.
Both the Islanders and Saint Peter's offenses were held in check for the better half of five innings, before the Islanders were able to push across two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break the scoreless game open.
Senior Jordan Lee finished 3-for-4 on the day including a run scored while Cody Clarke recorded two hits to go along with two RBI's in his Islanders debut.
It was the Islanders preseason first team pick in Tyler Ware that lifted the offense in the sixth. The Omaha, Neb. native led off the inning by drawing one of his team-high three walks. Ware then stole second before SPU's Mike Doran walked Kyle Danford to setup Clarke for his first RBI as an Islander. Justin Perales singled to left field the following at bat, scoring Danford from third to give the home squad a two-run advantage.
Two costly errors in the top of the seventh by the Islanders gave the Peacocks life as they drove across two runs to tie the ballgame. SPU scored its first run of the game on a fielders-choice, which allowed Nick Henriquez to cross the plate on a groundout to third base. The Peacocks picked up an infield hit on the next at bat when a ball was hit sharply toward the left side of the infield where Casey Thomas could not make a play on it.
Clarke came up big for the Islanders, though. The junior drove in Lee for his second RBI of the game on an infield single.
Geiser, a redshirt freshman, played hero for the Islanders though, in a marathon at bat in which the right-hander from Portland, Texas drove the ball to deep right field, clearing the bases on his way to a stand up triple and putting the islanders up 6-2.
The Peacocks would score rally to score two runs in the eighth before senior Jacob Dorris entered the game to pick up the two-inning save.
Matt Danton pitched six complete innings for the home team, allowing four hits, no runs and striking out seven on the day. Danton gave up a double down the right-field line to begin the game but settled down soon after, sitting down the next 13 batters he saw.
Both the Islanders and Saint Peter's offenses were held in check for the better half of five innings, before the Islanders were able to push across two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

McNeese State 8, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 4
LAKE CHARLES, La. – Behind a strong performance from junior right hander Bryce Kingsley and the hot bats of a few newcomers, the McNeese baseball team clinched the opening weekend series against Arkansas-Pine Bluff with an 8-4 final score on Saturday at Cowboy Diamond.
The Cowboys will look to sweep the series on Sunday when they host UAPB in the finale that is slated to begin at 1 o’clock.
Kingsley picked up his first win of the season after having tossed six innings and allowed only three earned runs, and struck out six.
McNeese (2-0) managed eight runs on 11 hits, including two home runs, while limiting the Lions (0-2) to four runs on four hits and dropping their record to 0-2 to start the season.
Eight of McNeese’s hits came from newcomers in the lineup including three who made their first collegiate start on Saturday. Junior Connor Crane continued to impress the crowd on Saturday as he belted out three hits that included a home run and a double as well as an RBI. Junior transfers Lewis Guilbeau and Garrett LaRosa as well as freshmen Bryce Packard started in their first games for the Pokes and did not disappoint as the trio combined for five hits.
Matt Gallier also delivered a moon shot, while Crane and freshman Lewis Guilbeau added doubles in the victory for the Cowboys.
The Pokes jumped out to an early lead in the first frame after Crane belted a two-out dinger over the left field. In the next inning, Gallier sent a missile in almost the exact location as Crane produced his home run. The homer scored two runs to give McNeese the 3-0 advantage.
Facing a 4-0 deficit, UAPB responded in the top of the fourth inning and scored two runs to cut the lead in half.
McNeese responded with two runs of its own in the bottom frame as senior Connor Lloyd’s ground out to shortstop allowed catcher Cameron Toole to cross the dish while freshman Bryce Packard took advantage of a Lions’ wild pitch to up the ante at 6-2.
Both teams traded runs in the fifth inning that was highlighted by an RBI-single from Toole to score Garret LaRosa form third. Toole batted 1-for-1 on the night with a run scored and an RBI.
The McNeese bullpen came into play again in Saturday’s contest when senior Cory LaPeze took the mound in the seventh inning to relieve Kingsley. LaPeze was credited with his fourth career save after having allowed no hits and no runs to score and struck out two batters in the last three frames.
UAPB delivered its second home run of the game in the sixth inning but could not catch up to McNeese who tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning on a wild pitch that scored Gallier.

Southeastern (2-0) broke open an early pitcher's duel with a five-run explosion in the fourth inning.
Junior catcher Chris Eades started the surge with a one-out single to left field. The junior from Slidell, Louisiana, knocked a bounding single high over the head of the third baseman and then advanced all the way around to score when Bulldog starter, and loser, Tyler Clancy (0-1) walked the next three batters.

Wichita State 4, Sam Houston State 3
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Wichita State used a pair of two-run home runs to beat Sam Houston State 4-3 Saturday at Don Sanders Stadium and even the series 1-1. The series deciding game will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.
Sam Odom tossed six innings and allowed the four runs on eight hits. He struck out eight batters in the game and didn’t issue any walks. The sophomore righty maneuvered around jams in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Shockers first blast came in the second inning when right fielder Zach Reding hit one out to right. Odom allowed a two-out single to third baseman Chase Rader before Reding’s homer.
Wichita State doubled its lead in the top of the fourth inning with another two-run bomb, this time by Rader. The homer could have been just a solo shot if it weren’t for a one-out error before the blast.
Things started to look up for the Bearkats in the bottom of the fourth when they exploded for three runs. First baseman Spence Rahm hammered a two-run opposite field homer to get the scoring started and Ryan Brinley followed it up with his first home run as a Bearkat.
Sam Houston would have a few other chances to score in the game but couldn’t get any more runs across.
The seventh was the best opportunity the Kats had to level it up. Shortstop Jake MacWilliam opened the frame with an infield single and advanced to second on an error. Second baseman Ryan Farney singled to left field but MacWilliam was thrown out at the plate by a great throw from the left fielder.
Bearkat pitcher Seth Holbert was brilliant in relief. He tossed three scoreless innings and allowed just two hits.
Isaac Anderson picked up the win for the Shockers, tossing six innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Sam Hilliard, who started as the designated hitter, picked up the save with three innings of relief.

Nevada 9, Abilene Christian 6
ABILENE, Texas – Nevada scored nine runs in the first four innings Saturday afternoon and that's all the Wolfpack would need as they knocked off ACU, 9-6, in the second game of a season-opening three-game series at Crutcher Scott Field.
Nevada first baseman Austin Byler – who blasted a three-run home run to right-center field in Friday night's season-opener – had a three-run shot to left field in the first inning Saturday off ACU starting pitcher Aaron Mason. The Wolfpack scored another run in the first and tacked on three more in the second to take a quick 7-0 lead on the Wildcats.
Mason left the game after just 1 1/3 innings of work, giving way to a Wildcat bullpen that was excellent over the final 7 2/3 innings of the contest. Austin Lambright was effective, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out one over 2 2/3 innings before giving way to Joe Gawrieh and Nate Cole over the final five innings.
Gawrieh and Cole were outstanding as they combined to pitch five innings of one-hit baseball, striking out seven Wolfpack batters and giving ACU a chance to get back in the game.
The Wildcats finally got to Nevada starting pitcher Jason Deitrich in the sixth for two runs. After Aaron Draper reached second on a throwing error by Nevada third baseman Bryce Greager, Hunter Beasley drove him in with a single to left field to make it a 9-1 game. Russell Crippen followed two batters later with a double to left-centerfield to drive in Beasley and make it a 9-2 game.
Cole replaced Gawrieh to start the seventh and mowed through the Wolfpack lineup with ease, striking each of the first two men he faced and getting a groundout to end the inning in order. The first man he faced was Byler, who struck out looking. Cole continued his solid work in the eighth with two more strikeouts as he worked around a two-out walk, and then in the ninth he set the Wolfpack down in order again, striking out Byler again (his sixth strikeout of the series) to end the top of the ninth.
The Wildcats then went to work on Nevada reliever Alex Lott in the bottom of the ninth as they tried to piece together a rally.
Brayden Gomez led off the ninth with a single and then scored on a Kyle Carroll triple to right-centerfield to make it a 9-3 game. After an Alex Copeland double to left field scored Carroll to make it 9-4, Lott retired Colton Hall and Marcelle Carter before giving up a run-scoring single to Aaron Draper that cut the Nevada lead to 9-5.
That was all for Lott, who gave way to Zach Wilkins. But Wilkins was greeted by back-to-back singles from Beasley and Tyler Eager, the latter of which drove in Draper to make it a 9-6 game. With the tying run at the plate in the form of Russell Crippen, Nevada head coach Jay Johnson went to the bullpen one last time to bring in closer Adam Whitt.
Whitt and Crippen engaged in a good battle before Whitt got Crippen to hit a sharp ground ball to shortstop Kyle Hunt, who fired across to Byler at first base for the final out of the game.
Deitrich picked up the win for Nevada, while Whitt earned a save and Mason was tagged with the loss. Copeland was 3 for 3 with an RBI for the Wildcats, while Beasley and Eager had two hits apiece.
The final game of the season-opening series will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. Garrett deMeyere is expected to get the start on the mound for the Wildcats.

Troy 5, Northwestern State 0 & Tory 8, Northwestern State 7
TROY, Ala. -- Northwestern State shook off a tough opener in the first game of a doubleheader at Troy on Saturday.
Unfortunately for the Demons, their bullpen could not hold the lead, as Troy's eighth- and ninth-inning rallies set the tone for an 8-7 victory in the opener at Riddle-Pace Field.
The Trojans then carried that momentum into the second game, shutting out the Demons for the second time in three games, 5-0, to sweep the twinbill.
In the opener, Cort Brinson got the Demons (0-3) going early, drilling a two-out solo home run in the first inning off Troy starter Ben Tidwell.
The Demons kept the pressure on Tidwell, adding a run in the second before a two-run, third-inning Garrett Logan single knocked Tidwell from the game and put NSU up 4-0. NSU upped the lead to 6-1 on a two-run double from Caleb Dugas in the fourth inning.
Armed with the lead, senior right-hander Josh Oller worked an effective 5 2-3 innings, scattering 10 hits and allowing three runs.
Austin Tanner came in and quelled the Trojans' sixth-inning threat, leaving NSU with a 7-3 lead.
Troy (3-0), however, rallied behind a three-run home run by leadoff hitter Matt Sanders, who finished 4-for-6 with five RBIs.
In the ninth, Nick Masonia's one-out single started the game-winning rally. Pinch runner Peyton Fuller advanced to second on a ground out before Clay Holcomb delivered a game-tying RBI single through the left side.
Holcomb stole second before Sanders notched a walkoff single to left against Brandon Smith (0-1).
In the nightcap, Troy's Grant Bennett (1-0) limited NSU to four hits in six scoreless innings, striking out eight.
Logan Hill's RBI single in the first inning was enough support for the Trojans, who touched NSU starter Evan Tidwell (0-1) for five runs across 6 1-3 innings before Hunter Duvic and Zach Habarka closed the final 1 2-3 innings.
Chase Daughdrill and Dugas each went 2-for-4 in the finale, while Dugas (2-for-5), Brinson (2-for-3), C.J. Webster (2-for-5) and Logan (2-for-4) all had multi-hit games in the opener.
The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. Junior right-hander Jeffrey Stovall is scheduled to make his Northwestern State debut against Troy right-hander Tucker Simpson.

South Alabama 8, New Orleans 2
MOBILE, Ala. – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (0-2) succumbed to a middle-inning offensive barrage in an 8-2 loss to the South Alabama Jaguars (2-0) on Friday afternoon at Stanky Field. With the win, the Jaguars have now won nine of the last ten meetings against New Orleans.
Trailing 2-0 in the sixth, Jordan Priddle struck out Daniel Martinez for the second out of the inning. With runners on second and third and a right hander coming to the plate, the Privateers went to the bullpen for Seth Laigast. However, Barnes ripped a single up the middle to double up the lead.
Two batters later, Garrett DeGallier broke the game open further with a two-run homer. It was DeGallier's third hit of the day, and when the dust settled, the Jaguars were ahead 6-0 heading to the final three frames.
New Orleans got on the board in the eighth inning when Hezekiah Randolph bounced an RBI single up the middle. In the ninth, Jonathan Coco hit a flare to left to score the second and what would be the final run of the game. The Privateers pounded out 12 hits, but left 13 runners on base.
Shawn Semple got his first collegiate start and held the Jaguars scoreless through the first three innings, navigating out of a couple of jams in the process. Semple gave up his first and only run in the fourth when DeGallier tripled to lead off the inning and was driven home by a sac fly off the bat of Ryan Raspino.
The Privateers left the bases loaded in the fourth and a chance to strike the scoreboard first. The bases were loaded with one out, but Samuel Capielano grounded into a two-unassisted double play on a check swing to end the threat.
Four Privateers recorded two hits in the loss. Sam Carriere went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Ray Veit also provided two hits while Coco and Randolph each had two hits with an RBI. All 12 of the Privateers' hits were singles.
South Alabama got another big day from Barnes who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs. DeGallier landed a double shy of the cycle, going 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Mike Dolloff pitched four innings in relief and picked up the win.

Nicholls 4, Stony Brook 1
THIBODAUX, La. – Following a tough 6-0 loss in their home opener, the Nicholls State University baseball team found another gear in game two of their three-game home series, earning a 4-1 victory over Stony Brook at Ray E. Didier Field.
The Colonels (1-1) struggled at the plate in Friday's loss to the Seawolves (1-1), but had no trouble on Saturday as they registered 10 hits from five different batters.
Stony Brook drew first blood, taking advantage of a pair of Nicholls errors to send Jack Parenty home. In the bottom of the second Alex Shermer blasted a triple off the centerfield wall and scored when Kyle Reese notched a single on the next at bat. The two teams remained tied at 1-1 over the next four innings.
In the bottom of the seventh the Colonels opened things up, taking advantage of miscues by the Seawolves to grab a 4-1 lead. Justin Holt and Darius Knight each singled, and advanced when Christian Correa flied out to center. In an attempt to relay the ball on the play, Stony Brook had an errant throw that allowed Holt to come home. On the ensuing at bat, Knight sprinted towards home plate as Alex Tucker laid down a bunt. Knight slid in safely for the score as Tucker reached first and advanced to second on an errant throw. Gavin Wehby pinch ran for Tucker, and come home when Kyle Reese doubled to centerfield. Neither team would score over the next two innings as Nicholls held on for the win.
