Stephen F. Austin 4, Louisiana-Monroe 3
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F Austin women’s tennis team picked up their third straight victory in a 4-3 triumph over Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday afternoon at the Schlief Tennis Complex.

“This was a great win for the team,” head coach Roberto Aspillaga said. “I am incredibly proud for the effort the girls are putting in. Louisiana-Monroe never gave up and certainly gave us nothing for free. Ultimately, what allowed us to break through was the quality doubles we played, as well as the heroic performance of Malena to close the match. Shecertainly showed everybody the kind of experience that comes with being No. 35 in the world in juniors.”

With the win over ULM (4-2), the Ladyjacks (5-2) closed their four-match homestand with a 3-1 mark.

SFA picked up a pivotal opening point, coming from behind in doubles to take a 1-0 lead. After falling 9-7 in No. 1 doubles, Valeria Terentyeva and Vivienne Kulicke picked up a 8-6 win in No. 3 doubles, before Denise Maxl and Macarena Sedano Acosta (No. 2 doubles) followed with an 8-6 victory of their own to win doubles 2-1.

The Ladyjacks then followed with wins from Maxl (No. 1 singles), Kulicke (No. 4 singles) and Malena Gordo (No. 2 singles) to secure the 4-3 win.

Kulicke opened up singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 win over ULM’s Anandhi Botha. After Maxl followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Amy Oliver, the Warhawks won No. 3 (6-2, 6-0), No. 5 (6-4, 6-1) and No. 6 singles (4-6, 6-1, 6-0) to take even the match 3-3.

In No. 2 singles, Gordo secured the victory with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Sophie Rufyikiri to close the match.
SFA will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 22, playing at Tulsa in an 11 a.m. match.

SMU 6, Northwestern State 0
DALLAS, Texas – Northwestern State settled for a split of its challenging Metroplex weekend, with a No. 3 doubles victory by Aliona Ladutska and Emily Kerr the highlight Sunday in a 6-0 women's tennis defeat to unbeaten SMU.

Ladutska/Kerr prevailed 7-5 over Anna Kate Anderson and Mary Wright, but SMU had already clinched the doubles point. The Mustangs (4-0) posted straight-set wins in singles play, except at No. 5, where Polina Ivanova was a set up at 7-6 (8-6) when play was halted so NSU (1-4) could begin travel to home ahead of potentially wintry weather.

"It was a good match," said Lady Demons' coach Olga Bazhanova, whose team won 4-3 Saturday at North Texas. "We had a plenty of good rallies, but SMU's players were more consistent and hit big shots in tough points.

"It was overall a pretty good weekend and we are positive about our upcoming matches."

The Lady Demons will stay on the road next weekend, facing former Southland Conference rivals Texas State and UT-San Antonio.
