The right-hander struck out six batters while not allowing a baserunner via the walk. Purdue scored its only runs in the eighth, both unearned due to a passed ball.

The Islanders scored the scored first for the second consecutive night. A&M-Corpus Christi picked up a run in both the second and third to put the pressure on Purdue's Mike Kornacker, a freshman, pitching for the first time this season.

Kornacker went a shaky two innings before being replaced by Gavin Downs. It didn't get any better for the Boilermakers (1-3) as the Islanders offense exploded for four runs in the fifth, forcing another change on the mound. Purdue used five different arms in the game, with just Downs going more than two innings.

The bats were alive again for the home squad tonight, as the Islanders outhit the Boilermakers 10-7 on the night. Jordan Lee led the team with three hits, going 3-for-4 in the game. Junior transfer Casey Thomas was the only other Islander to tally more than one hit, finishing with two, including a double which drove in two runs in the fifth.

Houston Baptist 3, Michigan State 1
ARLINGTON, Texas – Houston Baptist senior righthander Taylor Wright held Michigan State hitless through six innings to lead the Huskies to a 3-1 victory over the Spartans in the opening game of the UTA Hilton Invitational Friday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.

Wright (1-0) allowed one run on two hits, struck out one and walked two in 6.1 innings. Senior Chris Garza made his fourth appearance in five games and tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, striking out two. Junior Dylan Zarosky worked a perfect ninth for his first save of the season.

Junior shortstop Louie Payetta went 3-for-4 and scored a run for the Huskies (4-1), while junior designated hitter Austin Saenz went 2-for-3. Freshman catcher Zac Garcia added a pinch-hit double for the only extra-base hit of the game.

Blaise Salter and Ryan Krill had the only hits of the game for the Spartans (2-2).

Mick VanVossen (0-1) took the loss for Michigan State, allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 6.2 innings. Walter Borkovich was perfect in 1.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts.

VanVossen had trouble finding his command early as he walked senior rightfielder Thomas Clay to lead off the bottom of the first. Payetta followed with a single to right, then senior third baseman Curtis Jones walked to load the bases. VanVossen uncorked a wild pitch to plate the Huskies’ first run, then senior catcher Samm Wiggins delivered a sacrifice fly and senior centerfielder Zach Nehrir added an RBI groundout to stake HBU to a 3-0 lead.

Wright mowed through the Michigan State lineup, allowing only three baserunners through the first six innings. Brandon Hughes reached on an error twice, but was picked off in the first inning and doubled off when he failed to tag up properly to end the fourth, and Johnny Nate drew a walk.

Hughes drew a walk to lead off the seventh, then Salter beat out a chopper to short for the Spartans’ first hit of the game. Mark Weist grounded to short and beat out the potential double play to put runners on the corners with one out. Krill then smacked a single to left to put Michigan State on the board, and Wright came out of the game. After Garza hit Ryan Richardson with his first pitch to load the bases, he struck out Alex Troop and got Anthony Cheky to fly out to right to end the threat.

The Huskies will conclude the UTA Hilton Invitational with a pair of games on Saturday. HBU will face Southland Conference rival Southeastern Louisiana in a non-conference tilt at 11 a.m., then will play host UT Arlington at 6:30 p.m. Both games can be heard on HBUHuskies.com.

Lamar 14, Manhattan 1 (7) & Lamar 2, Manhattan 1
BEAUMONT, Texas - An 11-run first inning in the series opener surged the Lamar offense to a 14-1 win, and left-handed pitcher Chase Angelle followed that with a complete-game 2-1 victory in the nightcap against Manhattan Friday night in a gusty Vincent-Beck Stadium.

LU (4-2) starting pitcher Danny Fernandez (2-0, 2.08 earned run average) ran through the Manhattan (0-2) offense in the first inning of game one with just a walk allowed, but when he returned to the mound in the second frame looking at an 11-0 lead.

Fernandez went on to complete the game on seven innings after the contest was called in the seventh due to the 10-run rule that both head coaches agreed to pregame. He allowed only three hits on the day with two walk and five strikeouts.

Stijn van der Meer led off the Cardinal first with a single to right field and moved up to second base when Manhattan's starter Scott McClennan (0-1) over threw the first baseman on a pickoff attempt. Two batters later Reed Seeley drove in van der Meer for the first run of the game.

Including Seeley's at-bat, the Cardinals strung together 13-straight at-bats that resulted in a runner reaching base. LU had six hits, five walks and two MC errors in that span. Brandon Provost and followed Seeley with a hit, and then Santana followed Provost with a walk that loaded the bases. Cutter McDowell reached on a walk, which scored Seeley, and then Kyle Markum popped up a sacrifice fly that was crushed into center field, but was caught in the wind and Chris Kalousdian couldn't complete the play.

The wind reached a top gust of 29 and averaged between 16 and 22 miles per hour throughout the game.

Markum's fly ball allowed both Provost and Santana to score. With two on and one out, Mason Salazar rolled a dribbler to the left side, but third baseman Matt Forlow over ran it and allowed McDowell to score. Eckols walked and van der Meer punched his second hit of the inning through the left side to knock in two more runs. A walk and three singles later LU had a 10-0 lead, and McDowell drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 11-0.

McClennan only lasted two innings in the game and threw 82 pitches. He gave up eight hits, four earned runs (11 overall), five walks and three strikeouts. Maxx Feldman relieved him and quickly gave up another run in the third inning on a fielder's choice RBI from Kevin Santana.

The second game was quite the opposite with both team only mustering up a combined three runs.

Manhattan jumped out to a quick lead in the first frame. Kalousdian led it off with a singled and promptly stole second soon after. Santisteban drove him in on a single through the left side. Angelle's (1-1, 2.57) defense helped him limit the damage with a 6-4-3 double play that ended the inning.

After the first inning no base runner made it to third, and only two landed at second. He finished the contest with eight hits allowed, no walks and seven strikeouts.

Big Red tied the game in the second inning on a double to right center from Tyler Sullivan that pushed across McDowell. McDowell lined a one-out single through the right side and advanced to second on a ground out to the left side from Jake Nash.

Satran, who pinch ran for Markum after a leadoff walk, scored the game winner in the eighth inning on a scorched double into left center field from McDowell. Satran was able to move into scoring position on an errant pickoff throw and reached third base on a sacrifice bunt by Santana.

Van der Meer finished the day with a combined four hits in nine at-bats and two runs scored and two knocked in. McDowell, Santana and Seeley all had three hits on the day. Seeley scored four runs and knocked in four, McDowell scored two and pushed across three and Santana had one run and two driven in.

The Jaspers and Cardinals will face-off again in another doubleheader on Saturday that is scheduled to start at 1 o'clock. Lamar will have Will Hibbs (0-0, 8.31) on the mound in the early game and Eric Foshee (0-1, 11.57) in the nightcap.

New Orleans 5, Alcorn State 0
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (2-3) got a strong outing from Shawn Semple and a five-run fifth in a 5-0 win over the Alcorn State Braves (1-4) on Friday evening at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark.

Semple threw 6.2 shutout innings and struck out 10 batters. He got into a groove early and recorded seven of his strikeouts in the first three innings. Semple slipped off the mound on his last batter faced and was taken out as a precautionary measure. Darron McKigney came in and finished off the frame.

The Privateers got all their runs in one inning against Colton Laird who threw 39 pitches through the first four innings. Jonathan Coco just missed a home run on a breaking ball to lead off the inning. New Orleans eventually loaded the bases with one out and a dropped fly ball off the bat of Chaz Boyer pushed the first run across.

An RBI sac fly from Samuel Capielano made the score 2-0, and the Privateers got a key two-out hit from Ryan Calloway to punch two more runs across. New Orleans also made the Braves pay for a pair of errors in the inning. All five runs New Orleans scored were unearned.

Defensively, the Privateers went through a clean game in the field, committing no errors and making some solid plays including a sprawling catch by Calloway in the top of the fifth.

Calloway went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs, a run, and a stolen base. Capielano went 1-for-3 with a run driven in while Coco and Jonathan Santana each scored a run. Kevin Kelleher closed out the game in a non-save situation, striking out two batters in the ninth.

The Braves were limited to just three hits on the night, all of them singles. Laird went 6.2 innings and striking out four batters. The Braves committed three errors on the evening, including two in the five-run fifth. Alcorn State batters struck out 12 times.

Creighton 4, Northwestern State 3 & Northwestern State 6, Creighton 2
NATCHITOCHES, La. – After Creighton scored single runs in the ninth and 10th innings to win the opener of Friday’s doubleheader, it would have been easy for the Northwestern State baseball team to hang its head.

Instead, Matthew Alford and Josh Oller quickly made statements that the Demons are a resilient bunch.

Alford collected a career-high three hits and drove in a career-best three runs while Oller worked 6 2-3 strong innings, as Northwestern State earned a split of the doubleheader with a 6-2 win in the nightcap at Brown-Stroud Field.

Oller (1-0) set the tone early, allowing just one hit across five shutout innings to start the game. Alford did his part from the top of the batting order.

Alford finished 3-for-5, a day that included a leadoff single off Creighton’s Matt Warren (1-1) in the first inning. After a Bret Underwood sacrifice bunt and a productive Caleb Dugas groundout, Alford scampered home with the game’s first run, setting in motion three straight innings in which the Demons (2-5) tallied a run.

Alford finished his career-best performance by singling in one of two insurance runs in the eighth inning.

While the Demons methodically built a lead that grew to 4-0 in the fifth inning, Oller was in command. Utilizing his full four-pitch arsenal, Oller carved up the Bluejays’ lineup until Creighton put together a two-run seventh inning.

Just when it appeared the Bluejays (4-1) were poised to make another late-game rally, Chase Hymel stepped in and closed the door.

Hymel, a junior college transfer from Delgado Community College, walked the first batter he faced before retiring the final seven Creighton batters of the game to earn his first collegiate save.

Hymel also appeared in the first game, a 4-3, 10-inning Creighton win, setting down all four batters he faced.

Stovall (1-1) took the loss in Game 1 when the Bluejays manufactured single runs in the ninth and 10th innings on sacrifice flies.

After NSU starter Adam Oller and Creighton starter Jack Rogalla turned in a 1-1 pitchers duel through six innings, the Bluejays took a 2-1 lead in the seventh on an unearned run.

The Demons answered with a two-run seventh, scoring once on a Creighton error and taking their first lead of the game on a Joel Atkinson RBI single up the middle.

Creighton was able to rally, however, and spoil a career-tying four-hit game by Cort Brinson, who went 4-for-4 in the opener.

The Demons and Bluejays will conclude the series with a 2 p.m. Saturday matchup. Right-hander Evan Tidwell (0-1, 7.11) is expected to start for NSU, while Creighton counters with left-hander Jeff Albrecht (1-0, 0.00). Should the game be rained out, the teams will finish the series with a noon game Sunday. ?

Missouri 2, Sam Houston State 0
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Sam Houston starting pitcher Andrew Godail and Missouri starter Reggie McClain dueled for eight innings before the Tigers knocked a two-run walk-off home run to beat the Bearkats 2-0 Friday in the Kleberg Bank College Classic.

Godail tossed eight shutout innings with four strikeouts before allowing the home run in the ninth. He allowed only four hits and two walks through the first eight frames.

The Bearkats managed only four hits in nine innings against McClain. The junior struck out four Kats and picked up his second win of the season.

Sam Houston had lead off runners on in multiple innings but could only get two into scoring position in the game.

Designated hitter Hayden Simerly reached on an error by the pitcher to lead off the second inning and was sacrificed to second with two outs in the inning. Second baseman Ryan Farney grounded out to end the inning.

Center fielder Colt Atwood gave the Bearkats their first hit of the game with a bunt single in the third. He was erased when Simerly reached on a fielder’s choice. Simerly then stole second to get in scoring position but he was stranded there.

With two down in the fifth, catcher Collin Yelich lined a single up the middle for the Bearkats second hit of the ballgame but he was stranded at first.

Right fielder Travis Lee slapped a single into left center to lead off the sixth inning but was erased on a ground ball double play. Left fielder Bryce Johnson flew out to right field for the final out of the inning.

For the second straight inning the Bearkats got the lead-off runner on but had him erased on the bases. Simerly singled to start the seventh but was thrown out trying to steal second.

The Bearkats went hitless in both the eighth and ninth innings before the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth.

Base runners were at a premium for the entire game, as each team had just four hits and one error going into the bottom of the ninth inning.

ULM 5, Stephen F. Austin 0 & ULM 10, Stephen F. Austin 3
MONROE, La. – Stephen F. Austin managed just three runs over a pair of games, dropping both games of a doubleheader to Louisiana-Monroe at Warhawk Field. SFA fell 5-0 in game one before dropping a 10-3 decision in game two, falling to 1-6 on the year.

The original three-day schedule was altered after threatening weather conditions impacted the weekend forecast, forcing SFA and ULM to play two on Friday
.
Game one of the doubleheader saw Cameron Gann hit the mound for his second outing of the season as the senior struggled early, allowing three Warhawk runs in the bottom of the first inning. Gann then settled into his groove, giving up just two hits and over the next five innings while keeping the Warhawks off the board.

But SFA’s offense provided no run support as the ‘Jacks continued to struggle to score runs. ULM was able to plate two more runs in the seventh, ending Gann’s day after 6.2 innings pitched as he allowed five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts but picked up his first loss on the year.

The ‘Jacks were unable to push any runs across the plate, extending their scoreless streak to 23 innings, dating back to the fourth inning of the Washington State game Monday night. SFA managed just five hits against ULM, scattering them throughout the game.

Game two got off to a much more promising start for SFA as following a leadoff single from Matthew Dickey, the ‘Jacks finally got a run across the plate as a Kyle Thornell triple scored Dickey from second as SFA built a 1-0 lead after one.

ULM responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead 2-1. SFA would notch a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth to reclaim the lead at 3-2 as a Warhawk error led to a Dan O’Neill score, followed by an RBI single from Hunter Wilson to bring Garrett McMullen home.

SFA took that lead into the fifth when ULM notched a pair of runs to take a 4-3 edge, then exploded for five runs in the sixth to push the lead to 9-3. The Warhawks added one more in the eighth to finish the 10-3 victory, handing the Lumberjacks their sixth-straight loss.

Dillon Mangham picked up the loss for the ‘Jacks, allowing eight runs on nine hits with just two strikeouts over 5.0 innings of work.

SFA now looks to salvage one game against the Warhawks while trying to snap its six-game losing streak in the process. Game time is still up in the air for Saturday as the original first pitch was slated for 6 p.m. Eric Polivka is slated to get the start for SFA, seeking his first victory on the year.

Texas-Pan American 3, Abilene Christian 1
EDINBURG, Texas – Texas-Pan American left fielder Logan Landon had a triple and a two-run home run Friday night and ACU hitters struck out 12 times against Bronc pitchers as UTPA dealt the Wildcats a 3-1 loss in non-conference baseball action at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The loss dropped the Wildcats to 0-4 on the season, while the Broncs improve to 3-2. ACU hasn’t started a season 0-4 since the 1979 campaign. The teams will continue their three-game series Saturday at 6 p.m.

ACU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Russell Crippen drove in Marcelle Carter with a sacrifice fly for the Wildcats’ first lead of the season. But the Broncs got the game tied in the bottom of the third when Landon led off the inning with a triple and scored when Tony Rogue singled him in to knot the game at 1-1.

The pitchers dominated the game through the middle innings as neither team was able to mount much of an offensive threat. The Wildcats couldn’t touch UTPA starting pitcher Blake English, who went eight strong innings. English gave up just five hits and two walks while striking out nine Wildcats.

In the bottom of the sixth, ACU relief pitcher Thomas Altimont easily retired the first two batters he faced before hitting Correy Davis to give the Broncs life. Then Altimont hung a 2-2 breaking ball and Landon turned on it and drove it out over the fence in left field for a two-run home run and a 3-1 UTPA lead.

That was more than enough for the Bronc pitching staff, which allowed just six hits on the night. Alex Copeland led off the top of the ninth to give the Wildcats a chance, but reliever Andrew Padron struck out Taylor Fajardo, Kyle Carroll and Colton Hall in order to end the game and pick up his first save.

Altimont was tagged with the loss to fall to 0-2, while English got the win to improve to 1-1.
