JACKSON, Miss. – Northwestern State designated player Cassandra Barefield became the program’s all-time leader in home runs at 39 with her third long ball in as many days and the Lady Demons defeated Belmont 9-0 in five innings and Morehead State 6-5 on Friday.
 
The home run pushed the Houston native past Erin Mancusco, who recorded 38 between 1999-2002. Barefield notched an impressive five RBIs on the day while finishing four for five at the plate. NSU (6-8) pushed its win streak to four, including the first three games of the Jackson State Tournament.
 
Kellye Kincannon led NSU with a three-run home run in the second inning against Morehead State (2-4), providing just enough for the Lady Demons, despite being outhit 10-5.
 
Cagle’s final line including a whopping eight strikeouts in just 3-2 innings pitched along with two hits in relief of starter Bailey Gray.
 
Against Belmont (2-4), Hailee Rhodes added to her recent surge, driving in three runs and notching her fifth game in six outings she recorded a hit.
 
Brittney Jones tallied her second home run in four games and is tied with Barefield and Kincannon for the team lead of three.
 
In the circle, Micaela Bouvier picked up her third win in the last four starts and for the second straight start, one hit the opponent. This time, Bouvier went four innings holding the Bruins scoreless and providing NSU the cushion it needed.
 
Northwestern State continues the Jackson State Tournament on Saturday with a 10:00 a.m. game against Belmont and 2:45 p.m. outing versus Morehead State. The Lady Demons close out the tournament on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against host Jackson State.

McNeese State 3, Missouri State 1
McNeese State 3, Missouri State 2
LAKE CHARLES, La. – McNeese picked up a doubleheader victory over Missouri State Friday night in its home opener defeating the Bears 3-2 in the opener before taking the nightcap 3-1.
 
McNeese (9-3) fell behind 1-0 in the fourth inning of game two but a two run RBI bloop single by Melissa Arriaga gave McNeese a 2-1 lead. Emily Vincent capped off the Cowgirls scoring with a solo home run over the right centerfield wall for a 3-1 lead. The home run is Vincent’s first of the season.
 
Senior Bianca Lilly picked up her first win of the season to improve to 1-0. Lilly allowed three hits, three walks, one run and struck out two. 
 
Jamie Allred picked up her second save of the day when she replaced Lilly in the fifth. Allred ended the game with two strikeouts and allowed one hit in the nine batters she faced.
 
Lauren Langner led the Cowgirls at the plate in game two with three hits while Arriaga picked up two hits knocked in two of the three Cowgirl runs.
 
McNeese opened the game with two runs in the first inning on singles by Vincent and Tori Yanitor and a double by Erika Piancastelli. Another run in the second on a run by Dakota Matiko gave the Cowgirls a 3-0 lead.
 
The Bears scored a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Kaitlin Beason then added another run in the sixth on a solo home run by Chelsea Thomas to cut the Cowgirl lead to 3-2. MSU threatened to score more runs in the sixth but with runners on first and second and two outs, reliever Jamie Allred halted the rally by striking out Madison Jones to end the inning.
 
Allred ended the game by getting the Bears to go down in order in the seventh to pick up her first save of the season. Rachel Smith was credited with the win to improve to 4-2 on the season.
 
McNeese picked up seven hits in the game with Yanitor going 2 for 3 at the dish. Piancastelli and Marisa Taunton both picked up doubles.

Houston Baptist 13, Valparaiso 8
Houston Baptist 6, Alabama State 5
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior utility player Victoria Granchelli hit a first-inning, three-run home run to set the tone and HBU held on to win its fourth-straight game, 6-5, over Alabama State to complete day one of the Samford Tournament Friday.
 
V. Granchelli and Shay Orsak each led HBU (5-7) with three RBIs. The duo plus Melissa Herman had two hits in the game. Shannon O’Connor (2-4) went the distance in the circle, as she allowed eight hits, five runs, and four walks while striking out one.
 
Alabama State (3-8) was led by Jenna Mae Thorne, who went 3-for-3 at the plate. Carly Evans went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored. Melissa Christmann started in the circle and took the loss, as she allowed six hits, six runs, and three walks in 3.1 innings. Rachel Mills tossed the final 2.2 innings and gave up one hit and one walk while whiffing four.
 
HBU took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on V. Granchelli’s two-out blast to right-center field. Orsak’s RBI double in the bottom of the second scored Libby Brown and increased the Huskies’ lead to 4-0.
 
Alabama State cut the deficit in half in the top of the third on Evans’ two-run double.
 
After the Hornets scored a single run in the top of the fourth to cut HBU’s lead to 4-3, the Huskies added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to increase their lead to 6-3. Caitlin Gunn drew a one-out walk and Michaela Granchelli was hit by a pitch, placing runners on first and second. Erin Alaniz pinch-ran for Granchelli and both she and Gunn scored on a two-run double by Orsak.
 
The score remained 6-3 until the top of the seventh, when Evans hit a one-out, two-run home run to left field, cutting the Hornets’ deficit to one, 6-5. After a fly out for the second out of the inning, Kendall Core was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single by Aleesa Yanez, placing the tying run 60 feet away. But O’Connor got a fly out to end the game.
 
HBU faces host Samford Saturday at 1:30 pm.

HOUSTON – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team secured its first win of the season in its second game today of the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic at Cougar Softball Stadium. The Islanders dropped a 6-2 loss to New Mexico this morning before picking up a 5-4 victory over Houston (6-10) this evening.
 
Senior Lindsey Lyles had a standout day as she drilled two home runs and a double to hit .500. She also collected five RBIs and 10 total bases. Junior Dani Tefft also hit .500 on the day with three hits and a pair of stolen bases. Senior Mickayla Cochran, junior Cosette Hernandez, sophomore Jessica Mendez and freshman Savannah Sandoval all tallied two hits on the day.
 
After a scoreless first two innings, the Islanders got on board in the top of the third with a run on four hits to take a 1-0 lead. Lyles hit her second double of the season to start the frame and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Galloway. Sandoval then stepped to the plate and ripped a RBI single through the left side to score Lyles and put the Islanders on the board. Hernandez and Tefft kept the Islanders' bats going with back-to-back singles to load the bases for Morse. However, the Cougars escaped as Morse hit a fly out and Hernandez was called out on the double play.
 
After a two-out single by Houston in the bottom of the third, Lyles tallied the third out to bring the Islanders' bats back to the plate. In the top of the fourth, Carter reached on a walk to start the frame and Cochran followed with her fourth double of the season with a shot to center field as Carter advanced to third. Mendez then hit a RBI sacrifice fly to center field to bring Carter home to score and give the Islanders a 2-0 lead. The Cougars pulled out of the jam as Lyles hit into a double play to end the frame.
 
The Islanders built a 5-0 lead with two outs in the top of the sixth with three runs on two hits. After Morse reached on a walk to leadoff the inning, Carter hit a line out before Cochran reached on a fielder's choice. With one out, Mendez nailed a single to right field to advance Cochran to second. Lyles then came to the plate and blasted her second home run of the day and her third one this season to clear the bases and give the Islanders a five-point cushion.
 
The Cougars then answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth on two hits to pull within three. Katie St. Pierre hit a one-out infield single before advancing to second on a fielder's choice by Kaylin Crumpton. With two outs, Selena Hernandez hit a two-run home run over the center field wall to score St. Pierre and put the Cougars on the board. 
 
Houston rallied back in the bottom of the seventh with two runs on four hits. After a leadoff groundout, Jaime Edwards hit a double down the left field line before Julana Shrum followed with a single to center field to put Cougars on the corners. Kris Davila then hit a RBI single through the right side to plate Jaylin Baldridge who came in to pinch run for Edwards. St. Pierre then followed suit with a RBI single through the left side to score Rains who came in to pinch run for Shrum. After Carter recorded her third strikeout of the game for the second out of the frame, the Islanders escaped with the victory as Tefft snagged the fly out in left field.
 
Carter (1-7) picked up her first win of the season and her 14th career win in the Islanders' circle. She held the Cougars to seven hits, four runs and three walks while striking out three in seven innings.
 
Kayla Maxwell (2-2) registered the loss for Houston in three innings. She allowed five hits, two runs and one walk.
 
New Mexico (6-6) built an early deficit for the Islanders after scoring three runs in the bottom of the first on a pair of hits. Brandi Heimburg led off the frame with a single to left center before advancing to second on a groundout by Shelbie Franc. After a walk put Lobos on first and second, Chelsea Johnson hit a three-run home run over the center field wall to give New Mexico an early 3-0 lead. Islanders' hurler Stephanie Flores settled in and struck out UNM's Karissa Haleman before allowing back-to-back walks. Flores then picked up her second punch out of the game to end the frame.
 
The Islanders threatened in the top of the third with bases loaded but New Mexico was able to pull out of the jam. With two outs, Hernandez reached on a walk before advancing to second on a single to left field by Mendez, for the Islanders' first hit of the game. Brittney Morse followed with a walk to load the bases, but Liz Carter hit a fielder's choice as Mendez was called out on the play.
 
A&M - Corpus Christi's bats rallied in the top of the fourth with two runs on two hits to pull within one. With one out, Tefft ripped an infield single before swiping her 23rd career stolen base to move into sixth place all-time in the Islanders' record books. With Tefft on second, Lyles stepped to the plate and cranked her sixth career home run and her second this season with a shot over the left field wall to make it a 3-2 lead for New Mexico.  
 
The Lobos then tacked on another home run in the bottom of the fourth to give them a two-point cushion. Lisa Rodrigues sent a solo shot over the left center wall to lead off the frame. Flores settled in and retired the next two Lobos before a single through the right side by Franc and an error by the Islanders advanced her to second. The Islanders capped off the frame after Tefft snagged the fly out in left field.
 
The Islanders put runners in scoring position in the top of the sixth but were unable to push any across home plate. With one out, Cochran nailed a single through the right side before registering her 15th career stolen base. Tefft followed with a walk but a pop fly by Lyles and a groundout by Hayley Galloway sent the Islanders' defense back on the field.
 
New Mexico added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to build its lead to 6-2. Rodrigues started the frame with a single down the left field line before Flores recorded her seventh strikeout of the game. UNM's Heimburg then reached on a walk before a sacrifice bunt by Franc advanced Heimburg to second and Rehanna Little to third. Jasmine Casados followed with a RBI single through the left side to score Little for the Lobos' fifth run of the game. Heimburg then stole home to make it a 6-2 lead for the Lobos. After a walk put Lobos on first and second, Haleman hit a fly out to Cochran for the third out of the frame.
 
In the final inning, Hernandez hit a single through the right side for the Islanders' fifth hit of the game but was stranded as a pair of fly outs ended the game.
 
Flores (0-4) suffered the loss in the Islanders' circle. The junior allowed nine hits, six runs and five walks while striking out seven in six innings.
 
Lauren Soles (3-1) recorded the win for the Lobos in 5.1 innings. She held the Islanders to four hits and two runs, while walking five and striking out four. Krissy Fortner secured the save for the Lobos after allowing just one hit in 1.2 innings.
 
The Islanders (1-11-1) will continue action in the classic tomorrow against Illinois and Houston. First pitch against the Fighting Illini is set for 12:30 p.m. followed by a 3 p.m. first pitch against the Cougars.

Sam Houston State 10, Jacksonville 9 (9)

MOBILE, Ala. – Second baseman Dani Allen broke a 30-year old record to lead Sam Houston to a 10-9 victory Friday over Jacksonville in the Kats’ opening game at the South Alabama Softball Classic in Mobile.
 
Allen went 6-for-6 at the plate, setting the Sam Houston softball record for most hits in one game. The old record of five was originally set by Sandy Madar in 1985 and tied twice since.
 
Allen posted a one-run single in the fourth inning, a two-run single in the sixth, a two-run double in the seventh and the winning run on a solo homer run in the bottom of the ninth to account for six RBIs.
 
The Bearkats lead 6-4 after six innings. But Jacksonville put five runs on the board on a pair of homers in the top of the seventh to take a 9-6 lead.
 
Alexis Garcia’s run-scoring single forced extra innings as the SHSU women rallied for three in the bottom of the seventh.
 
Jessica Slater and Hillary Adams each added a pair of hits. Slater, Sarah Allison and Angelica Gonzales each accounted for a run batted in.
 
Meme Quinn was the winning pitcher, striking out eight JU batters. Quinn left the circle in the sixth for as Haley Baros and Amber Neal saw relief duty. Quinn reentered in the seventh and finished the game.
 
In Friday's second game, defending Mid-America Conference champion Ball State run-ruled the Bearkats 8-0 in five innings.
 
Slater and Allison accounted for the Bearkats' only hits. Ball State pitcher Nora Steinbech struck out six of the 21 batters she faced.

Iowa State 8, UIW 4
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team could not overcome a 4-run fourth inning by Iowa State in an 8-4 loss on Friday at Roadrunner Field in the first game of the UTSA Tournament.
 
The Cardinals (1-10) had built up a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to some timely hitting and solid pitching.  Alex Zepeda (Sinton/Sinton HS) and Lindsey Hood (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) each had two-out run scoring singles in the second and third innings, respectively.  In the top of the fourth, Kristin Hebert (Humble/Atascocita HS) helped her own cause with a solo home run.  She also had allowed just one hit and one unearned run through three innings.
 
The Cyclones (7-2) broke out in the bottom of the fourth inning.  They opened the inning with a pair of singles.  After a sacrifice bunt, Kelsey McFarland drove in a run and that was followed by a Brittany Gomez triple to bring in two more runs.  Gomez later scored on a ground out to finish off the damage.
 
Iowa State tacked on two runs in the fifth inning on a two-run homer by Jorden Spendlove.  Each team scored in the sixth, but the Cardinals were unable to come back in the seventh.
UIW finished the game with eight hits and two errors.  Hebert was 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI's and her first home run of the season.  Zepeda finished 2-of-3 at the plate.  Hebert took the loss after allowing seven hits, six earned run and two walks in 4.1 innings.
 
Iowa State tallied 10 hits and did not commit an error in the game.  Four players had two hits apiece with Spendlove and Maddie Reese each hitting home runs.
 
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. when they play tournament host UTSA.

North Texas 3, Abilene Christian 2

WACO, Texas – The ACU softball team dropped a pair of games Friday morning to put an end to its three-game winning streak, falling to North Texas and Oregon at the Baylor Invitational at Getterman Stadium.
 
Playing in an extremely tough field against the best competition in the history of the program, the Wildcats lost to North Texas, 3-2, early Friday morning and fell to second-ranked Oregon, 8-0, in just 4 1/2 innings.
 
Against North Texas early Friday morning, the Mean Green took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Danielle Hoff. The Wildcats, though, tied the score in the bottom of the frame when freshman shortstop Peyton Hedrick doubled, went to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.
 
The Mean Green (4-7) went back up 2-1 in the sixth and extended the lead to 3-1 in the top of the seventh. But ACU got to within 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh on a leadoff home run by Cara Hoover. But Stacey Underwood then retired the next three Wildcats in order to finish the game and pick up the win to improve to 2-1.
 
Emily Seidel (2-3) was tagged with the loss for ACU, even though she only allowed five hits and three runs and didn't walk a batter over seven complete innings.
 
In the Wildcats' second game of the day, Oregon pitchers Geri Ann Glasco and Cheyenne Powell combined to throw a one-hit shutout in a game that ended because of the eight-run rule. The Wildcats' only hit came on an infield single by leadoff hitter Taylor Brown in the top of the fourth inning.
 
Oregon (12-0) led 1-0 going to the third inning before the Ducks picked up four runs to make it 5-0. Jasmine Smithson-Willett had the big blow in the inning with a two-run double. The Ducks put an early end to the game with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 8-0.
 
Danica Mercado had a two-run home run to make it 7-0, and Gwen Svekis had an RBI triple to make it 8-0. Once again, Powell pitched a scoreless fifth inning to end the game. Seidel was tagged with the loss for ACU to fall to 2-4, while Glasco went four innings to pick up the win and improve to 4-0.
 
ACU (3-6) is back on the field Saturday at 2 p.m. to take on unranked Tulsa and then again at 6:30 p.m. against seventh-ranked Baylor. ACU will close out its run in the tournament at 10 a.m. Sunday against North Texas.

Louisiana Tech 12, Lamar 0 (5)

RUSTON, La. – Shannon Sain and Stephanie Meeuwsen each had four hits on the day, but the Lamar Lady Cardinals dropped both ends of a non-conference softball doubleheader at Louisiana Tech on Friday by scores of 12-0 and 10-6.
 
Meeuwsen had two of Lamar’s four hits in the opener, as the Lady Cardinals were unable to climb out of a 7-0 hole after the first inning. Sarah Ragsdale and Sain had the other hits for Lamar.
 
Krysta Tutsch had a three-run home run in that first inning of the opener for Louisiana Tech. Janine Godwin added a two-run homer in the fourth for the Lady Techsters.
 
In the nightcap, Lamar held a 2-1 lead heading to the bottom of the third before Louisiana Tech erupted for seven runs. The Lady Cardinals made it close by scoring three runs in the top of the seventh.
 
Sain had three of Lamar’s 12 hits in the second game. Meeuwsen, Casey Cromwell and Corina Thornton added two hits apiece for Lamar (3-8). Cromwell and Marissa LeJune homered for Lamar. Pauline Tufi homered twice for Louisiana Tech (9-5).
 
Lauren Dannelley (1-4) started and took the loss for Lamar in the opener, while starter Laura Napoli (2-4) took the loss in the second game.
 
Lamar looks to snap its six-game skid when it travels to the University of Texas for a five-game tournament next weekend.
