Central Arkansas 8, Louisiana-Monroe 0 (6)
CONWAY, Ark. – A pair of late pinch-hit homers and a near-perfect pitching performance from Kylee Studioso propelled Central Arkansas to an 8-0 six-inning victory over ULM Saturday at Farris Field.

Studioso (6-2) gave up just one hit and walked none while striking out 11 as she held the Warhawks (11-3) – who came in having averaged 7.5 hits and 7.4 runs per game – scoreless for the first time this season.

She got ample run support from a lineup that saw nine players record hits and 13 reach base, with nine hits and seven walks in all, including a trio of home runs from UCA hitters.

After two scoreless innings, the Bears (7-5) broke through for four runs as they batted around in the bottom of the 3rd, getting a solo homer from junior third baseman Sam Forrest to lead off the inning followed by a two-run single from freshman shortstop Tori Seasor six batters later. The Bears capped off their inning with an Amy Gunnells single to score Audrey Pratt. The UCA lead was extended to 5-0 in the 4th as junior catcher Jessie Taylor drove in sophomore right fielder Briana Whisenhunt on a sacrifice fly to center field.

Both teams went scoreless in the 5th, and Studioso sat the Warhawks down in order in the top of the 6th, getting a pair of strikeouts and a flyout. In the bottom half, the Bears went up 6-0 when freshman Brianna McArthur hit her first collegiate home run with a pinch-hit shot over the left field fence. After sophomore left fielder Hannah Stirton coaxed a full-count walk and stole second, the Bears finished off the Warhawks with yet another pinch-hit homer, this time from sophomore Tylor Dodson, who belted one out to right center to cement the victory.

The Bears host Delaware at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Northwestern State 10, Belmont 3
Northwestern State 10, Morehead State 5
JACKSON, Miss. – A little time was all Northwestern State’s softball team needed to unleash its veteran-laden offense.

Through the first three days of the Jackson State Tournament, it is clear the Lady Demons’ lineup is clicking.

For the second straight day, the Lady Demons used their offense to fashion a sweep, as Northwestern State stretched its winning streak to six games Saturday by defeating Belmont, 10-3, and Morehead State, 10-5.

In three days in Jackson, the Lady Demons (8-8) have won five games, scoring at least six runs in four of those games.

Northwestern State rapped out 24 hits in the two games, cracking double figures in scoring for the third and fourth times this season.

After a wire-to-wire victory against Belmont in the opener, NSU found itself down 5-3 after three innings of the nightcap against Morehead State (2-7).

That changed with a two-out rally in the fourth started by a Sidney Salmans single. Salmans took second on a throwing error by Morehead State and scored on a Brittany Virgoe single before Kellye Kincannon drilled a two-run home run to NSU ahead to stay.

The offensive surge came after Skylar Cagle (2-0) entered in relief of starter Shelby Sells and collected the final out of the third inning, keeping the deficit at 5-3.

With Morehead State capable of rallying at any time, Northwestern State extended its lead with a single run in the fifth on Sorosiak’s home run and added three key insurance runs in the seventh on a two-run Kaytie Proctor single and an RBI groundout by Salmans.

Kincannon finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBIS while Natalie Landry and Virgoe each went 2-for-4.

In the opener, NSU scored in five of the game’s seven innings including a four-run fourth thanks to a Landry’s grand slam that scored Brittney Jones (fielder’s choice), Cassandra Barefield (single) and Kincannon (walk).

Six Lady Demons tallied RBIs, including Virgoe who hit a two-run home run in the second, scoring Shelby Alexander who pinch ran for Baylee Shephard following her walk.

One inning later, NSU added to its lead on a Sorosiak double that scored Jones and put the Lady Demons ahead 4-1. Hailee Rhodes got into the action in the seventh, with a RBI double of her own. Two batters later, Kincannon reached on a throwing error, scoring Landry with NSU’s 10th run of the game.

In the circle, Micaela Bouvier earned her third straight win, tossing 5 1-3 innings in relief of starter Skylar Cagle. Bouvier gave up two runs on four hits while striking out five.

The Lady Demons will conclude the series on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against host Jackson State.

Houston Baptist 6, Alabama State 3
Samford 4, Houston Baptist 3 (9)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After a heartbreaking 4-3 extra-inning loss to tournament host, Samford, early this afternoon, the Huskies rebounded nicely to double up Alabama State, 6-3, Saturday as HBU went 3-1 at the Samford Tournament.

Nicole Shedd led HBU (6-8) by going 4-for-8 with a home run and five RBIs in the two games. Shay Orsak also went 4-for-8 with a run scored.

Game one’s loss to Samford snapped HBU’s four-game winning streak. Shedd hit her first-collegiate home run, as she went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Orsak led the Huskies with two hits, while Victoria Granchelli had the team’s other RBI.

Emily Mueller started in the circle and got a no-decision, as she allowed two hits, two runs, and six walks with one strikeout in 2.1 innings. Laci Belovsky (3-3) tossed the final 6.1 innings and gave up three hits, two unearned runs, and one walk with two strikeouts.

Five different Bulldogs had one hit, as Samford (12-2) ran its winning streak to eight games. Four different players had an RBI. Rebecca Leonard started in the circle and got a no-decision, as she gave up five hits, two runs, and four walks with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Mollie Hanson (6-1) earned the win in relief, as she allowed one hit and one unearned run, while striking out three in 3.0 innings.

Samford drew first blood with a two-run bottom of the second, as Abby Sweeney hit a one-out homer to left-center to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Megan Dowdy’s RBI single brought home Caroline Seay for a 2-0 lead.

The Huskies tied it in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run by Shedd, her first of the season.

The score remained tied through regulation, as the teams headed into extra innings. With the international tiebreaker rule into effect, Cecilia Bauer was placed on second to start the top of the eighth. Melissa Herman singled, which brought Bauer to third. V. Granchelli grounded out to shortstop, which allowed Bauer to score and give the Huskies a 3-2 lead.

The Bulldogs would answer, however, as Abby Adams was placed on second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on an RBI double by Karsin Spinks. HBU forced a ninth inning by getting a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat.

In the top of the ninth, Shedd was placed on second and advanced to third on a Libby Brown sacrifice bunt. But the Bulldogs got a strikeout and a fly out to end the inning. Samford’s Dowdy was placed on second to begin the bottom half of the inning, advanced to third on a fielding error, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Caitlin Bice, ending the game.

In game two, Shedd went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Huskies. Alyssa Burnett went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Belovsky (4-3) went the distance in the circle, as she allowed six hits, three runs, and one walk while striking out two.

Laura Aguilar led ASU (3-10) with three hits in four at-bats. Kendall Core went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Rachel Mills (0-4) started in the circle and took the loss, as she gave up seven hits, four runs (three earned), and one walk while striking out two. Maddie Phelps tossed the final inning and allowed two hits and two unearned runs, as she struck out one.

There was no score until the top of the third. Madison Vonhagel hit a one-out double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI ground out by Erica Reyes.

The Huskies erupted for four runs in the top of the sixth, as Shedd hit a three-run homer to left-center field, her second blast of the day.

The Hornets answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. ASU got on the board with an RBI double by Alexis Johnson. Jenna Mae Thorne tried to score from first, but was gunned down, Bauer-to-Belovsky-to-Vonhagel. That proved key as the very next batter, Core, hit a two-run home run to left to make the score, 4-3.

With a new pitcher in Phelps in the circle, Burnett helped the Huskies increase their lead by hitting a two-run homer to right to give HBU some breathing room, 6-3. The Hornets threatened with two outs and runners on the corners, but HBU got a fly out to end the game.

HBU plays a single game at UTSA Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 6 pm.

Iowa State 2, Southeastern Louisiana 1
UTSA 2, Southeastern Louisiana 1
HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team dropped a pair of one-run decisions at the UTSA Classic on Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

Four of Southeastern’s losses this season have been by one run, as the two losses on Saturday dropped SLU to 4-6 overall. Southeastern opened the day with a 2-1 loss to Iowa State (9-2) and fell, 2-1, to UTSA (10-4) later in the day.

The Lady Lions’ lack of offense spoiled strong efforts in the circle by freshman Nicole Ayala (2-1) and junior Taylor Bishop (2-2). Junior outfielder Katie Lacour accounted for four of SLU’s seven hits on the day. In the loss to UTSA, junior designated player Amber Sather had a pair of hits and drove in SLU’s lone run.

In the opening game of the day, Iowa State plated a pair of runs in the top of first inning against Ayala. Junior centerfielder Brittany Gomez led off the game with a triple, then scored on a double by junior right fielder Aly Cappaert. Cappaert would later score on a throwing error by SLU sophomore catcher Lacey Fritz to give ISU an early 2-0 lead.

SLU loaded the bases in its half of the first, but could not break through. The Lady Lions would score their only run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior second baseman Vanessa Eng walked, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior first baseman Teresa Lemos and an ACU error, before scoring on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 2-1.

Southeastern would get no closer. Lacour led off both the fifth and seventh innings with base hits, but was left stranded in both innings.

In the day’s second game, SLU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first versus UTSA. Lacour led off the game with a single, moved to second on a single by senior shortstop Megan Moore and scored on an RBI single by Sather.

Bishop held UTSA at bay until the Roadrunners took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning. A two-run home run by senior Megan Low gave UTSA a 2-1 lead.

For the remainder of the game, Bishop and junior Kacy Freeze matched zeroes. UTSA managed one hit for the final three innings, as Bishop took the loss despite throwing a complete-game three-hitter.

No. 7/11 Baylor 4, Abilene Christian 2
RV/No. 25 Tulsa 10, Abilene Christian 0
WACO, Texas – The ACU softball team dropped a pair of games to nationally ranked teams Saturday at the Baylor Invitational, falling to both 25th-ranked Tulsa and seventh-ranked Baylor at Getterman Stadium.

The Wildcats lost to Tulsa, 10-0, in five innings early in the afternoon, and then played one of its best games of the season in a 4-2 loss to Baylor. The Wildcats are now 3-8 on the season and will play North Texas at 10 a.m. Sunday in the final game of the tournament.

In the loss to Baylor, ACU jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the Bears as freshman shortstop Peyton Hedrick continued her torrid start to the season with an RBI double that drove in Taylor Brown to give the Wildcats the early lead.

But the Bears answered in the bottom of the second on a three-run home run by Shelby Friudenberg, driving in Jordan Strickland and Ari Hawkins in front of her to make it 3-1. Baylor increased its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third when Kaitlyn Thumann led off with a single, stole second and scored on a throwing error by Hedrick.

Those four runs were more than enough for Sarah Beth Toben, who went six strong innings in the circle for Baylor, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out four Wildcats. Toben got the win to improve to 3-0 while Kendall Potts got the save after pitching the seventh inning. However, she didn't get out of the inning unscathed as ACU's Alyson Bishoff hit a one-out solo home run to left-centerfield to make it 4-2.

But Potts got the final two outs on a strikeout and a groundout to finish the game. Emily Seidel pitched well for the Wildcats, giving up nine hits and four runs (three earned) over six innings. She was tagged with the loss to fall to 2-5 on the season.

In the opener against Tulsa, the Hurricane scored once in the third inning, five more times in the fourth and four more times in the seventh to take the 10-0 win. Tulsa starting pitcher Emily Watson allowed just four hits and struck out seven Wildcats in a complete-game performance in the circle.

Julia Montoya got the start for ACU and gave up four and five runs in 3 1/3 innings to take the loss and fall to 1-3 on the season. Hedrick had two hits for ACU, and Bishoff and Brianna Barnhill had one apiece.

For Tulsa, Brittany Walker was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Jodi Edmiston was 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. First baseman Julie Kernen was 2 for 4 with three RBI.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6, Illinois 1 (Top of 4th)
HOUSTON, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team was leading Illinois 6-1 in the top of the fourth today at the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic, when rain showers suspended play for the day at Cougar Softball Stadium. The Islanders game against Houston that was scheduled for 3 p.m. today has been canceled.

The Islanders (1-11-1) and Fighting Illini (5-8) will resume play at 9 a.m. tomorrow in the top of the fourth and will wrap the classic against New Mexico after the completion of the first game.

In the top of the first, Illinois put up a run on one hit to take a 1-0 lead. After a leadoff double by Allie Bauch, Alyssa Gunther advanced her to third on a sacrifice bunt. Ruby Rivera then followed with a RBI groundout to shortstop to score Bauch and put the Fighting Illini on the board. Islanders' hurler Liz Carter pulled the Islanders out with her first strikeout of the game.

The Islanders quickly answered in the bottom of the first with a run on one hit to even the game at 1-1. With two outs, Brittney Morse sent her 10th career homer and second this season over the center field wall for the Islanders' first run of the game.

After a scoreless second inning, the Islanders' bats ignited for six hits and five runs in the bottom of the third. Lindsey Lyles started the frame with her third double of the season with a shot down the left field line before landing on third after Savannah Sandoval ripped a single through the left side. Sandoval then swiped her second stolen base of the season before Cosette Hernandez hit an infield single to load the bases for Dani Tefft. The junior hit a RBI groundout to shortstop to plate Lyles. Morse then followed with her third double of the season to left center to score Hernandez and Sandoval, and make it a 4-1 lead for the Islanders. Carter kept the Islanders' bats alive with a single to right center to advance Morse to third. With runners on the corners, Mendez reached on a walk to load the bases. After Galloway hit a fly out for the second out of the frame, senior Mickayla Cochran nailed a two-run single to right field to bring Carter and Morse across home plate. Illinois pulled out of the inning with a strikeout.

Carter was facing Brittany Sanchez at the plate with a 3-2 count in the top of the fourth when rain suspended play.
