Sam Houston State 9. A&M-Corpus Christi 5
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Dylan Ebbs had a strong start on the mound and Spence Rahm had a 4-for-5 day with two doubles and a home run to lead Sam Houston State in a 9-5 bounce-back win over A&M-Corpus Christi in the finale of the Kleberg Bank College Classic at Whataburger Field.

A&M-Corpus grabbed a 1-0 run lead on a solo home run by designated hitter Justin Perales in the bottom of the second but the Bearkats answered right back in the third inning.

Designated hitter Hayden Simerly worked a one-out walk and right fielder Travis Lee singled to right field. Center fielder Colt Atwood drove them both in with a double down the right field line.

The Kats narrowly avoided giving a run right back in the bottom half after Jordan Lee led off the inning with a single, stole second and moved to third base on a one-out error. Starting pitcher Dylan Ebbs was able to get Lee out at the plate on a chopper hit right back at him.

Sam Houston exploded for five runs in the fifth inning. Lee singled to start the frame and Bryce Johnson singled with one out. First baseman Spence Rahm followed with a three-run bomb to left-center field. The homer is his second of the season.

The Bearkats kept it going with two outs as second baseman Ryan Farney singled to center field and stole second base. He came around to score on a single up the middle by catcher Hunter Courson. A fifth run in the inning came home on a wild pitch.

SHSU scored two more in the eighth inning that extended the lead to 9-2.

A&M-Corpus made things interesting with four runs in the eighth inning. The Islanders knocked a pair of home runs off of Ebbs, who appeared to have run out of gas. Jordan Church came out of the bullpen to end the threat.

Church allowed just one hit in 1 2/3 innings pitched. The junior finished with one strikeout.

The Bearkats are scheduled to host Prairie View A&M Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium.

Stephen F. Austin 8, Louisiana-Monroe 7
MONROE, La. Trailing 5-2 after five innings, Stephen F. Austin scored six runs over the final four innings, then shut the door on a late Louisiana-Monroe rally to defeat the Warhawks 8-7 at Warhawk Field. The win snaps a six-game losing skid for the Lumberjacks who improve to 2-6 on the season.

SFA struck first for the second-straight game as Nick Ramos ripped a single to center with two outs, scoring Will Vest from third and Matthew Dickey from second as the ‘Jacks took an early 2-0 in the top of the third inning. The Warhawks would respond with three runs in the bottom of the inning, taking the 3-2 lead after three.

ULM added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth off a two-RBI double, giving the Warhawks a 5-2 advantage.

In the top of the sixth, SFA would load the bases with no outs, then tie the game off an RBI ground out to second by Dan O’Neill, scoring Dickey from third. Cameron Salvaggio then struck out but reached first on a passed ball, allowing Conner Fikes to score in the process as the ‘Jacks pulled to within one at 5-4. Kyle Thornell then recorded an RBI on a ground out to first, plating Ramos as SFA tied the game at 5-5 after the top of the sixth.

The ‘Jacks tacked on three more runs in the top of the eighth inning as Thronell ripped a two RBI double down the right field line, scoring Hunter Wilson and Garrett McMullen as SFA reclaimed the lead. Pinch hitter Eric DeJesus then notched a single up the middle, scoring  Thornell from second as SFA was in control with an 8-5 lead after eight and a half innings.

ULM mounted a rally in the bottom of the eighth, using a double and a Lumberjack throwing error to bring two runs across and cut the deficit to 8-7. The Warhawks then had the tying run 90 feet away in the bottom of the ninth, but the ‘Jacks threw him out at home in a steal attempt, ending the game as well as SFA’s six-game losing skid.

Dickey and Wilson each recorded a pair of hits on the day for the ‘Jacks, who finished with a season-high 11. Thornell recorded a season-high three RBIs on the day with Dickey adding a pair and DeJesus recording his first RBI as a Lumberjack.

SFA starter Eric Polivka went 4.0 innings, allowing five runs on six hits and four strikeouts to earn the no decision. Grant Page earned his first win in an SFA uniform, pitching 3.0 innings and allowing no runs on two hits with a pair of strikeouts. Tyler Wiedenfeld earned the four-out save, his second of the season, allowing one hit on the day.

The victory wraps up SFA’s four game road swing as the Lumberjacks return home for a Tuesday night game against Arkansas-Little Rock. First pitch against the Trojans is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Jaycees Field.

New Orleans 12, Grambling 4
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (4-3) pulled away late, punching 15 hits and getting a solid outing from Jordan Priddle in a 12-4 win over the Grambling Tigers (2-5) on Sunday afternoon at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark.

The Privateers and Tigers traded two runs a side through the first three and a half innings. In the fourth, New Orleans grabbed the lead back and would never relinquish it afterward. After Jonathan Santana reached on a walk and Jay Robinson singled to right, Chaz Boyer hit a one-out fly ball to center. However, Grambling center fielder Edwin Drexler couldn’t locate the ball and it dropped in for a hit, scoring Santana and making the score 3-2.

New Orleans then posted a five-run sixth inning that put the game out of reach. The Privateers had four singles in the frame and took advantage of a pair of Tigers errors in the field. Grambling had four errors in total on the contest. The Privateers also posted a four-run eighth, all against reliever, Brennan Williams.

Priddle (2-0) went five innings in his first start and gave up two runs (one earned) while walking one batter and striking out three.  “He needed that. We’ve been just bringing him along slowly, trying to get his pitch count up and we’re going to need him,” said Coach Ron Maestri.

The Privateers also got another solid day from Jonathan Coco. In his first two at-bats, Coco came up with Ryan Calloway in scoring position and drove him in both times. On the day, Coco finished with three hits and three RBIs.  “Everything even the outs, he’s hitting the ball hard. That’s good to see. We’ve got to have people pick us up every day and he did well,” said Maestri.

All nine Privateers starters collected a hit and five players worked multi-hit days. Sam Carriere and Samuel Capielano each had two hits and two runs. Jay Robinson, in his second collegiate start, went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Kevin Kelleher was one of four pitchers to come out of the pen and he recorded two outs via a strikeout.

The Tigers were led offensively by Dee Brown who collected two hits and drove in two runs. Starter, Dion Holbrook pitched into the sixth, giving up eight runs over 5.2 innings. Only three of those runs were earned. Tray Bell and Edwin Drexler also collected two hits each.

The Privateers will next take to the field on Tuesday in the first game of the First NBC Cup against Tulane. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Nicholls 10, Troy 3
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Nicholls State University baseball team had a rough ending to a roller coaster of a week, falling 10-2 against Troy University in the Cox Diamond Invitational tournament finale at the Vince J. Whibbs Sr. Community Maritime Park.

The Colonels (4-2-1) had a wild week, defeating No. 4 LSU on their home field in Baton Rouge before traveling to Pensacola, Fla. for matchups with North Florida, Southern Miss and Troy. Nicholls defeated the Ospreys 4-3 on Friday, were forced into a 1-1 tie with the Golden Eagles after poor weather conditions on Saturday night and fell to the Trojans (5-2) on Sunday.

Troy took advantage of a Colonel error in the opening inning, jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back. Righty Justin Sinibaldi opened the game with consecutive strikeouts before Logan Hill stepped to the plate. Hill made contact, sending the ball to second for what should have been the third and final out of the frame. A fielding error allowed Hill to reach first and the inning was extended. The Trojans capitalized, notching two doubles and two singles to send five runners home and take an early stranglehold on the game.

Troy added a run in the second to take a 6-0 lead.

Christian Correa put Nicholls on the board in the third inning with a single through the left side, scoring Justin Holt.

The Trojans chipped in a run in top of the fourth before Marc Frazier answered with a solo homerun blast in the bottom of the frame.

Troy added runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth to take a 10-2 lead and seal the game.

Sinibaldi (1-1) took the loss, allowing 13 hits and seven runs (two earned) with four strikeouts.

Righty Tucker Simpson (1-1) tossed five innings with five hits, two runs and fanned five Colonel batters.

Correa led Nicholls offensively with a perfect 4-for-4 outing, knocking in an RBI. Frazier was 1-for-4 with a homerun.

Nine batters registered a hit for the Trojans, while eight had two or more hits. Reid Long contributed a monster 3-for-4 day with four RBIs and two runs scored.

The Colonels will travel to Baton Rouge for a battle with Southern University at 6 p.m. on Tuesday before hosting a four-game series against Utah, slated to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday at The Did.

Texas-Pan American 4, Abilene Christian 3
EDINBURG, Texas – ACU gave up two runs in the bottom of the seventh and the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday as the Wildcats dropped a 4-3 decision to Texas-Pan American in the final game of a three-game series at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The loss gives the Broncs (5-2) a three-game sweep of the Wildcats, who are now 0-6 on the season. The Wildcats are scheduled to be back home Tuesday against nationally ranked Texas Tech for a 4 p.m. game at Crutcher Scott Field. ACU is then at Texas-Arlington for a 6:30 p.m. game Wednesday before returning home this weekend to host Northern Colorado in a three-game series.

The Wildcats trailed UTPA and starting pitcher Robert Quinonez 1-0 through six innings before finally breaking through with three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 3-1 lead.

Garrett Hale got the Wildcats’ inning started when he reached base on an error and then scored on a double by freshman Brayden Gomez to tie the game at 1-1. Sophomore first baseman Russell Crippen then tripled home Gomez to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead. Quinonez was then lifted in favor of Matt Rigby, who gave up a sacrifice fly RBI to Kyle Carroll as the Wildcats took a 3-1 lead.

ACU starting pitcher Garrett deMeyere went the first four innings and gave up one run on six hits before giving way to Kevin Sheets, who pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth innings. However, given a 3-1 lead, Sheets gave up a hit by pitch, a single, threw a wild pitch and then gave up an RBI single before being lifted in favor of Ladgie Zotyka. The Broncs got the tying run in when Zotyka got a double-play ground ball and he got out of the inning with a strikeout.

In the eighth inning, ACU had runners on first and second with one out, but couldn’t get a run across as the Wildcats left two runners on base and failed to take advantage of two UTPA errors in the inning. In the bottom of the ninth, UTPA manufactured a run when Logan Landon led off with a single and then went to second on a groundout to first base by Scott Mercer. Landon then went to third on a wild pitch by Zotyka and scored on a sacrifice fly to Correy Davis to give the Broncs a 4-3 lead.

In the top of the ninth, the Wildcats immediately got the tying run on base when Crippen singled to center, but the next batter, Kyle Carroll, was ruled out on batter’s interference for the first out of the inning. Aaron Draper then singled to center field to push Crippen to second and that brought on UTPA closer Andrew Padron. He struck out Jeff Clarke for the second out and then coaxed a ground ball out from Tyler Eager to end the game and pick up his third save of the season.

Prior to Sunday’s game, the ACU bullpen had thrown 26.2 innings this season and allowed just 17 hits and 10 runs (eight earned) for a 2.70 ERA through the season’s first six games. But Sunday, Sheets and Zotyka combined to allow three hits and three runs in four innings of work as Zotyka was tagged with the loss.

Gomez finished the day 2 for 4 with one run scored and an RBI, while Crippen finished 3 for 4 with one run scored and one RBI.

Memphis 5, Central Arkansas 2
CONWAY, Ark. _ A four-run fifth inning carried the Memphis Tigers to a 5-2 victory over the University of Central Arkansas Bears in non-conference action at a cold Bear Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers (2-2) scored four runs off UCA starter Connor Gilmore (1-1) in the decisive inning, who allowed five earned runs overall in 4.1 innings, with 5 strike outs and 5 walks. Memphis used an RBI single by Carter White, a bases-loaded walk to Chris Carrier, a fielder’s choice and a double steal by Kane Barrow and Brandon Montgomery to take the lead for good.

The Bears, down 5-1, got one run back in the seventh when junior center fielder Tyler Langley was hit by a pitch, advanced to second when Braxton Phillips was also hit by a pitch and went to third on Wesley Hoover’s walk. A failed pickoff attempt by Memphis reliever Connor Alexander that sailed into center field allowed Langley to score and make it 5-2.

The Bears (3-1) got runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings but could not bring them around in their home opener. Logan Preston had an infield single in the eighth, while Phillips doubled and Wesley Hoover had an infield single in the ninth.

UCA took a 1-0 lead in the first when Phillips led off with a walk against Memphis starter Caleb Wallingford, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on Nate Ferrell’s single to left field. The Tigers tied it in the third, scoring on a safety squeeze bunt by Darrien Tubbs.

Memphis won despite getting just five hits, three by Barrow. UCA was led by Phillips, Hoover and Ferrell with two hits apiece. Wallingford (1-0) got the victory, going five innings and allowing 6 hits and 1 earned run.

UCA faces Ole Miss at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Oxford, Miss.

Bradley 5, McNeese State 0
LAKE CHARLES, La. – The McNeese State baseball team’s hitting woes continued at Cowboy Diamond on Sunday as the Cowboys failed to produce a run for the third straight game and were swept by the Bradley, 5-0, in the series finale.

McNeese (4-4) will now turn its focus towards an in-state rival that was one game away from a College World Series appearance in Louisiana-Lafayette. Barring a threat of inclement weather, the Pokes will travel to take on the Ragin’ Cajuns in a contest slated for a 6 o’clock start.

The Cowboys will look to put a 28 1/3 scoreless inning streak to rest Tuesday when they travel west to take on their in-state rival. The three-game shutout was the first recorded in school history.

Bradley (5-1) was led by starting pitcher Brent Stong who tossed eight scoreless innings, giving up only four hits along with four strikeouts. Reliever Stephen Toma came appeared in the final inning to complete the shutout despite giving up two hits.

Sophomore Trent Fontenot (1-1) was charged with the loss after 4.1 innings of work and three earned runs on four hits and a walk. However, Fontenot set a new career-high in strikeouts during his outing with seven on the day.

The Cowboys collected six hits on the day highlighted by a multi-hit performance by senior Andrew Guillotte. The Moss Bluff native batted 2-for-3 in the contest while Connor Crane, Garrett LaRosa and Kris Molter each recorded a hit. Freshman Joe Provenzano entered the game as a pinch hitter in the final frame and collected a hit for the Pokes.

Guillotte’s first hit of the day came on the leadoff at-bat for McNeese but a double play and a fly out prevented any hopes of scoring.

The Braves grabbed a three run lead in the top of the fourth inning, scoring on an RBI-single followed by a two run double later in the inning.

Crane extended his hitting streak to eight games in the bottom of the frame when he sent a single to left field.

Bradley added a run in the fifth inning when second baseman Chris Godinez’s ground out allowed Evan Gruener to score from third.

An insurance run was added in the eighth inning when centerfielder Brady Wilkin’s triple to left field brought home Godinez to score and up the Braves’ lead to a 5-0 advantage.

The Cowboys looked for an opportunity in their last at-bat with back-to-back hits from Guillotte and Provenzano but were cursed by consecutive strike outs to end the series.
