Southeastern La. 10, Northwestern 5
HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana rebounded from a tough loss Thursday to the No. 2-ranked team in the nation with a 10-5 pounding Friday of Northwestern University.
Southeastern (6-4) pounded out 17 hits, scoring multiple runs in the first, third and fourth innings, on its way to taking the series opener from the Wildcats (1-7) at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Ryan Byers led off the first with a single up the middle, moved to second base on a wild pitch by Northwestern starting pitcher Brandon Magallones (0-1) and advanced to third base when the second baseman mishandled a ground ball off the bat of Julian Service.
Byers eventually scored on a wild pitch with Service moving into scoring position. Service stole third and scored on Carson Crites' one-out single. The Lions led 2-0 after the first and would add three more in third.
Kevin Carr singled to open up the third, but was erased on Crites fielder's choice grounder to short. Crites stole second before Brett Hoffman drew a one-out walk. Left fielder Webb Bobo drove in Crites with a single to left center.
With two outs, catcher Nico Cuccia reached on an infield single to load the bases and Byers singled to right, plating Hoffman and Bobo.
Southeastern would add four more runs in the fourth, but the Wildcats would answer with a four spot of their own in the top of the fifth.
The Lions picked up their final run in the seventh when Daniel Midyett tripled in Service with two outs. Northwestern answered with a run in its half of the eighth to complete the scoring.
Tate Scioneaux (1-1) earned the win, allowing four runs in seven innings of work. Magallones suffered the loss for the Wildcats.
Byers, Cuccia and Hoffman all enjoyed three-hit nights, while Bobo, Crites and Midyett each produced a pair of hits.
With rain expected in the Hammond area later in the weekend, Sunday's contest has been pushed up a day as part of a doubleheader on Saturday to wrap up the series. Season ticket holders are asked to bring both their Saturday and Sunday tickets with them to the doubleheader.
Saturday's general admission tickets will be $12 for adults, $8 for youth, and will be good for both games of the doubleheader.
The first game, which includes baseball-themed bingo, is slated for 2 p.m. The game is also part of the Great American Spit Out. The series finale will begin approximately 45 minutes after the completion of the day's first game.
To open the doubleheader, the Lions will send junior right-hander Jake Johnson (2-0, 0.00) to the mound against Northwestern southpaw Reed Mason (0-2, 9.90). Junior left-hander Kyle Cedotal (1-1, 3.48) draws the starting nod for Southeastern in the finale against Wildcat left-hander Matt Portland (0-2, 2.25).

Stephen F. Austin 1, San Dakota State 0
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - A strong pitching performance and one run in the fifth was all Stephen F. Austin needed to defeat South Dakota State 1-0 at Jaycees Field Friday afternoon. SFA improves to 3-7 on the year and 2-3 at home in 2015.
The Lumberjacks managed just three hits against the Jackrabbits, who countered with seven of their own. The two teams met for the first time since the 1986 season as SFA improved to 7-2 all-time against SDSU.
SFA got its one run on just three hits while committing two errors while South Dakota State was held off the scoreboard with seven hits and a pair of errors of its own. It marked the first meeting between the two schools since the 1986 season as SFA improves to 7-2 all-time against the Jackrabbits.
After four and a half scoreless innings, SFA made its noise in the fifth. After
Garrett McMullen reached on an error,
Tyler Boxwell singled up the middle, advancing McMullen to third.
Anthony Soriano then knocked a deep sacrifice fly to right center, allowing McMullen to score from third and giving SFA its lone run of the day.
But that one run was all the `Jacks needed as starter
Cameron Gann went 7.1 innings, allowing seven hits and five strikeouts with just two walks on 100 total pitches, improving to 2-1 on the season.
Austin Smith picked up the five-out save allowing no runs and no hits in his 1.2 innings of work.
South Dakota State threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with just one out. But SFA turned a crucial double play to end the inning, one of three in the game for the `Jacks, keeping the Jackrabbits off the board.
SDSU threatened again in the ninth as a fielding error by McMullen put a baserunner on second with one out, who then advanced to third on a ground out. McMullen would get a chance to atone for his miscue, however, running down a fly ball to left center to end the game and preserve the win for SFA.
Nick Ramos had two of SFA's three hits on the day, going 2-for-3. Boxwell had the other `Jack single as
Conner Fikes drew a walk, leading to the only baserunners of the day for SFA.

McNeese State 6, UTSA 5 (10 innings)
LAKE CHARLES, La. – McNeese State senior Connor Lloyd had a little magic left over from his game-winning hit on Tuesday night to deliver another victory for the Cowboys baseball team who took down UTSA in a 6-5 ten inning showdown at Cowboy Diamond Friday night.
The game-winner came only three days after Lloyd delivered a shot to the outfield to help the Pokes defeat in-state foe Louisiana-Lafayette for the first time in five seasons in a 17 contest.
Facing two outs away from entering another extra inning, McNeese (6-4) buckled down and battled as junior Lewis Guilbeau was able to reach base on an error followed by senior James Cantu’s bunt single that allowed the Cowboys to have two runners on the bags and a solid hitter in Lloyd at the plate.
Just two pitches into the at-bat, Lloyd dropped a beautiful single into left field, allowing Guilbeau to round third and score the game-winning run at the plate.
The multi-hit performance was Lloyd’s second straight and third overall on the season. Senior Andrew Guillotte followed suit, hitting 2-for-4 in the game along with an RBI, a walk and a run scored. In total, nine different batters recorded a hit in the contest for McNeese.
After running into trouble early during the first two frames, the Cowboys turned to reliever Cole Prejean in hopes of getting the squad out of a 3-0 deficit. Prejean did not disappoint, firing off 4.2 innings and not allowing a single run to score despite giving up four hits. He also fanned a season-high five batters in the process.
Junior Collin Kober stepped on the mound for the last two innings and picked up his first win on the year after having worked 2.0 innings without giving up a run or a walk.
UTSA (6-3) turned in three runs in the top of the third innings, which was highlighted by an RBI-single up the middle from third baseman C.J. Pickering. McNeese responded in the bottom side of the frame with an RBI-single from Guillotte to cut the lead to two runs.
In the sixth inning, the Cowboys unleashed four runs on five hits and an error. Guilbeau, James Cantu, Matt Gallier and Cameron Toole each knocked in a run to help the Pokes take its first lead of the evening, 5-3.
Several streaks were continued in the sixth frame, led by junior Connor Crane whose infield single allowed the first baseman to hit safely in all 10 games this season.
With the finish line in sight, the Cowboys would have to put in extra work again for the second game in a row as the Roadrunners drove in two runs in the top of the eighth inning to tie the ballgame up, 5-5.
McNeese will be back in action on Saturday as the Pokes take on UTSA in a twin bill scheduled for a 1 o’clock start. The game can be followed on live stats by logging onto McNeeseSports.com.

Northwestern State 4, Sacred Heart 1
NATCHITOCHES – Adam Oller’s M.O. in his Freshman All-American season was to attack the strike zone and let his defense work behind him.
On a crisp, cold Friday evening, Oller proved that formula worked equally well for him as a sophomore, as the right-hander struck out a career-high nine in eight innings of Northwestern State’s 4-1 win against Sacred Heart at Brown-Stroud Field.
That goal quickly was attained, as Oller threw seven pitches in the first inning, all strikes. Facing 30 batters across a season-high eight innings, Oller threw first-pitch strikes to 19 of those batters.
Oller (1-1) did not allow a hit through the first five innings, which was key given Sacred Heart (0-1) starter Jeff Stoddard’s effectiveness against the Demons lineup.
Stoddard (0-1) matched Oller pitch for pitch for the first three innings, keeping the Demons (3-6) hitless until a two-out Chase Daughdrill single in the fourth.
After Daughdrill’s single, C.J. Webster followed with a long fly ball down the right-field line that glanced off Pioneers right fielder Dan Schock’s glove. The ball was ruled to have hit Schock’s mitt in foul territory.
Two pitches later, Webster smacked a two-run double over Schock’s head, snapping the scoreless tie and giving Oller all the run support he needed.
Oller ran into his first bit of trouble in the sixth inning when Jake Friar and Jesus Medina opened the inning with back-to-back singles.
Oller recovered by getting Kenny Byram to foul off a two-strike bunt attempt and struck out Zack Short swinging. Oller finished his escape job by getting Jayson Sullivan to ground into a fielder’s choice at third base, preserving the shutout.
The Demons tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning when Atkinson lined a two-run single back through the middle off Sacred Heart reliever
Dan Wertz to double the Northwestern State lead.
Brandon Smith entered in the ninth and, after allowing the first two Pioneers to reach, struck out the final three to earn his first save of the season.
Smith became the second Demon to earn a save, joining Chase Hymel, as Burroughs looks to shake out bullpen roles in the early season.
The series concludes Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Northwestern State will throw right-handers Josh Oller (1-0, 3.65) and Jeffrey Stovall (1-1, 6.00) against Sacred Heart right-handers Jason Foley (3-3, 3.30 in 2014) and Robbie Maguire (0-1, 15.09).

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Casey Thomas finished 3-for-5 with four RBI's as the Islanders baseball team defeated UT Arlington 12-9, to pick up its sixth win of the year.
The Islanders (6-2) used a four-run eighth inning highlighted by Kyle Danford driving in the go-ahead runs on a two-out single. Thomas drove in two runs prior to Danfords's at bat on a double to right field.
There was no shortage of offense as both teams collected double-digit hits with the Islanders notching 19 and the Mavericks with 16 on the day.
A&M-Corpus Christi trailed 3-0 early as UT Arlington (3-5) took advantage of the windy conditions as Garrett Harris had trouble finding the strike zone in the first coupe innings, issuing three walks.
In the third, the Islanders scored four runs to take the lead over the visiting Mavericks. Thomas picked up his first triple of the year as he drove in two runs. Tyler Ware singled through the right side in the next at bat, scoring Thomas from third. Junior Justin Perales finished things off with a single that scored Ware to closeout the outburst.
The Islanders and Mavericks traded runs midway through the game, with two coming in the fifth and another in the sixth.

Nicholls 5, Utah 4
THIBODAUX, La. – Starting pitcher Marc Frazier didn't earn a win on the mound, but was the hero in the bottom of the ninth, notching a game winning walk-off single to lift the Nicholls State University baseball team over the University of Utah on Friday night at Ray E. Didier Field.

Justin Holt walked before Christian Correa singled to drive in Morales. After a Frazier walk, Kyle Reese reached on an error, allowing Holt to come home.

In the bottom of the ninth Correa led off with a monster double that hit the centerfield wall. Byron Cobb pinch-ran for Correa. Seth Stevens was intentionally walked, bringing Frazier to the plate. With two strikes, Frazier notched a single through the right side, sending Cobb home as the Colonels stormed the field.

Middle Tennessee 2, New Orleans 1 (12 innings)
NEW ORLEANS, La
. – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (4-6) were done in by small ball for the deciding run in a 2-1 loss in 12 innings to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (6-1) on Friday at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark.

The Privateers started the scoring back in the second inning after getting the first two batters to reach. Preston Marsh singled and Hezekiah Randolph followed by reaching on a fielder’s choice. The Blue Raiders tried to turn a double play off the bat of Jonathan Santana, but the throw on the turn was wide and allowed Marsh to score.
