Nicholls 4, Texas-Arlington 0
Nicholls 6, Alcorn State 1
HAMMOND, La.  – Coming off a tough loss in their second game of opening day, the Nicholls State University softball team bounced back on Saturday by allowing one run in their two games as the Colonels defeated former Southland foe Texas-Arlington, 4-0, before knocking off Alcorn State, 6-1, on Saturday at Chappapeela Park.

With the victories, Nicholls improved to 3-1 on the year. The Colonels will wrap up play in the Lion Classic on Sunday against Tennessee-Martin. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.

The Colonels used eight hits to score four runs, including a solo home run by Alexis Huss and Jackie Johnson threw six shutout innings in the circle as Nicholls shutout UTA, 4-0.

Johnson surrendered just one hit on the day and struck out two. Hannah Haydel pitched the seventh to close out the game.

Huss gave Nicholls a 1-0 lead in the third when the junior transfer led off the frame with a solo shot. The Colonels then extended their advantage to 3-0 in the sixth, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Taylor and added another run on an error. The Colonels took advantage of another Maverick error in the seventh to plate one more insurance run.

It would be all the offense Nicholls needed as Johnson and Haydel combined for the Colonels’ second shutout of the season.

Huss led the team with two hits and one RBI.

Nicholls was held to just three hits against Alcorn State, but the Colonels were able to capitalize on two errors and eight walks to earn a doubleheader sweep on Saturday with a 6-1 win over the Braves.

Taylor Hastings picked up the win for the Red and Gray, allowing three hits in six innings of work. She finished with six strikeouts, two walks and her lone run was unearned.

Alcorn State spotted the Colonels two runs in the first inning after walking the first three batters. Taylor drove home the first run on a sacrifice fly and another run came in for the 2-0 lead.

A Colonel error in the second led to an RBI single by Alcorn, cutting the deficit in half at 2-1. But in the third, more errant pitching led to a bases loaded walk by Haley Stevenson. Huss then came through with a 2-run single and Laura Neil added a sac fly to give Nicholls a 6-1 lead.

Hastings would cruise through the next three innings, not allowing a hit. Freshman Ashleigh Downing pitched the seventh and retired the Braves in order for the win.

Haley Parkerson and Taylor had the other hits for the Colonels.

McNeese led their half of the first inning against Southern Miss by putting their first two runners on base. Lauren Langner led the game off with a single and Emily Vincent drew a walk. An RBI by Victoria Yanitor gave the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead.

In the final game for the Cowgirls Saturday, McNeese faced their first ranked opponent of the season in no. 23 South Alabama.

McNeese missed a chance to get a run across the plate in the top of the third after leaving the bases loaded.

The Jaguars struck first with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on two hits the tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third for a 4-0 lead.

Stephen F. Austin 6, Wichita State 3
Wichita State 2, Stephen F. Austin 1
WACO, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin softball team got big performances from a trio of freshmen on Saturday evening to down Wichita State 6-3 in the semifinals of the Getterman Classic hosted by Baylor. SFA will play No. 10 Baylor in the championship game on Sunday at noon.

The Ladyjacks (2-2) got big hits from Taylor Fraccastoro and Autumn Holloway and a nice outing in the circle from Callee Guffey to defeat the Shockers (2-2) in Saturday’s nightcap.

With the score knotted at 3-3 in the sixth inning, Holloway lined a single up the middle to bring home Fraccastoro and Annie Mehringer and give SFA the 5-3 lead. The timely hit proved to be enough as the Ladyjacks held on for the 6-3 win.

Guffey (1-1), who pitched the entire game for SFA, had a great night to pick up her first collegiate win. She allowed three runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings, walked one and fanned five on the evening.

Fraccastoro helped the Ladyjacks jump out to a 3-0 lead on the Shockers with her second home run in as many days. The catcher sent a solo shot to left-center to lead off the fourth inning. She finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.

Heather Hollingsworth helped SFA open up the scoring in the third inning with a sacrifice RBI to bring Alisa Hamilton in from third. Lindsay Campbell, who reached base on a fielder’s choice sac bunt earlier in the inning, scored the Ladyjacks’ second run when Shalie Day doubled through the left side in the next at-bat.

Brittany Lewis led SFA with three hits on the night (3-for-4) and drove in a run in the seventh inning to pad the Ladyjacks’ lead to 6-3. In the tournament, Lewis is hitting a sizzling .583 (7-for-12) with a home run, four RBI and four walks.

In the final round robin game of the tournament, SFA and Wichita State also clashed in Waco on Saturday morning. In what turned into a pitchers’ duel featuring another freshman, the Shockers prevailed 2-1 in game one.

True freshman Makayla Sikes (0-1) pitched very well in her collegiate debut. She surrendered two runs on eight hits in a complete seven innings and struck out two.

After Wichita State scored two runs in the top half of the sixth inning, Fraccastoro came up with a pinch-hit, bases loaded RBI single to bring the score back to 2-1. The Ladyjacks’ rally would fall just short however, despite getting a runner on third with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

No. 10/11 Baylor 3, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 0
WACO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team came up short in a doubleheader against No. 10/11 Baylor (4-0) today on the second day of competition in the Getterman Classic at Getterman Stadium.

Juniors Cosette Hernandez and Dani Tefft along with sophomore Jessica Mendez propelled the offense in the two games with two hits apiece while Hernandez nailed her first career double as an Islander.

Game 1: The Islanders got off to a strong start in the opening frame to take a 1-0 lead. With one out, sophomore Brittney Morse reached on a fielder's choice and senior Lindsey Lyles landed on first after a throwing error by the Bears' Brooke Seneshen. With two outs and runners on the corners, Hernandez drilled an infield RBI single to third and scored Morse to put the Islanders on the board.

The Bears answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame after Lindsey Cargill scored on a RBI fielder's choice by Sarah Smith. Cargill reached on a single to left field before stealing second and moving to third after Linsey Hays was hit by the pitch.

The Islanders garnered the lead back in the top of the second after sophomore Mackinzee Griebel scored on a RBI single to shortstop by Tefft. Griebel reached first and advanced to third after a throwing error by Caitlin Charlton.

The Islanders maintained the lead until the Bears' bats caught fire in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead. After Cargill reached on an infield single she advanced to second on an Islanders' throwing error before picking up a stolen base. Hays then followed suit with a RBI single through the middle to score Cargill and put the Bears on the board. Sarah Smith then stepped to the plate and hit a two-run home run over the left field wall to give the Bears the lead. The Islanders pulled out of the jam after consecutive fly outs.

Baylor tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to pad its lead to 6-2. After sophomore Katie Blanar replaced junior Stephanie Flores in the Islanders' circle, Ari Hawkins scored on a RBI infield single by Kaitlyn Thumann after registering a single. Next, Thumann was caught stealing as the Islanders registered the 2-6-3 putout for the third out, but it was after Cargill swiped home for the sixth run of the game. Prior to that, Cargill reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on Thumann's RBI single.

The Islanders then trimmed the deficit to three in the top of the fifth. Griebel led off the frame with an infield single and scored on a muffed throw by the Bears' Seneshen as Tefft advanced to second on the play. The Bears retired the next three Islanders to end the inning.

Mendez drilled an infield single in the sixth but that's all the Bears would allow as they secured the 6-3 win.

Flores (0-1) took the loss for the Islanders in three innings. The junior allowed five hits, four runs and one walk while recording one strikeout. Blanar allowed two hits, two runs and one walk while also registering one strikeout in three innings.

Tefft, Hernandez, Mendez and Griebel each chipped in one hit apiece in the loss.

Seneshen (1-0) sealed the win for the Bears in five innings. She held the Islanders to three hits, three unearned runs and one walk while striking out three. Heather Stearns earned the save after allowing just one hit in two innings. She also racked up three strikeouts.

Game 2: The Islanders battled the Bears and held them scoreless until costly errors in the bottom of the fifth put them on the board and propelled them to victory.

A&M-Corpus Christi started off strong as hurler Liz Carter settled in and retired eight straight Bears following a single through the left side in the bottom of the first by Cargill. Cargill then ended the streak with an infield single in the bottom of the fourth.

Carter was spot on retiring the next four batters she faced until a single down the right baseline in the bottom of the fifth and a passed ball put a Bear on second. Caitlin Charlton then reached on an Islanders' throwing error and Carter issued her first walk of the game to load the bases. Hawkins then stepped to the plate and hit a fielder's choice and the Islanders committed a throwing error to home plate which resulted in two runs for Baylor. The Islanders escaped the frame with a pop fly and a ground out.

In the top of the sixth, Tefft put herself in scoring position after drilling a single to center field and landing on second on a passed ball, but the Bears' defense pulled them out of the jam.

The Bears tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth after a two-out RBI double by Shelby Friudenberg to left center plated Jordan Strickland, who reached on a single through the middle. A fly out to Mickayla Cochran in center field capped the frame and the scoring.

Tefft, Hernandez and Mendez each added one hit apiece for the Islanders' bats.

GULF SHORES, Ala. – HBU fell to Liberty, 11-3 in six innings, and Jackson State, 7-4, on day two of the Sand Dollar Classic Saturday.

In game one, Liberty took a 2-0 lead with one swing in the bottom of the first, as Kelby Allen hit a one-out, two-run shot to left-center to give the home team on the scoreboard the early lead.

In the bottom of the third, Tori Zavodny homered to right field to give the Flames a 3-0 lead.

HBU scored three times in the top of the sixth to knot the game at 3-all. Shay Orsak led off the inning with a single, followed by a single by Nicole Shedd. After a groundout that moved the runners to second and third, Melissa Herman walked, loading the bases with one out. Libby Brown hit a two-run double to right-center field, cutting the deficit to one, 3-2. With runners at second and third, Cecilia Bauer reached on an error, which scored Herman from third and tied the game. The Huskies were still threatening, with two runners on, but Chandler Ball struck out consecutive Huskies to keep the game tied.

HBU’s defense had a rough bottom of the sixth, as Liberty put an eight-spot in the inning to win via run-rule, 11-3. The Huskies had four errors and two wild pitches with runners on in the inning.

Six different Huskies had a hit, while Brown had the two RBIs. Shannon O’Connor took the loss in the circle, as she went 5.0+ innings and allowed 10 hits, seven runs, and four walks with one strikeout. Emily Mueller and Erica Reyes each pitched in the sixth inning.

Crisp went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for Liberty, while Zavodny, Allen, and Mickey Loveridge each had two hits. Ball earned the win in the circle, as she allowed six hits, three runs (two earned) and one walk while striking out five.

Both HBU and Jackson State scored a run in the first inning in game two. An RBI single by Reyes scored Brown in the top of the second to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead.

The Huskies scored twice in the top of the fourth, as Herman scored on a passed ball and Michaela Granchelli scored on a Lady Tigers error, as HBU increased its lead to 4-1. But, similar to game one, the opponents followed with a big inning, with the defense partly the culprit. Jackson State ended the bottom of the fourth scoring four runs on three hits and three HBU errors, as the teams entered the fifth with the Lady Tigers having their first lead of the game, 5-4.

Jackson State added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single by AJ Hervey. The Huskies had a chance, with the tying run at the plate with two outs in the bottom half of the frame, but Merina Young got a strikeout to end the threat. The Huskies went down in order in the seventh.

HBU was held to just two hits in the game, as M. Granchelli and Reyes each went 1-for-2. Orsak and Reyes each had an RBI. Laci Belovsky started in the circle and lasted 4.2 innings, allowing four earned runs and four walks while striking out one. O’Connor pitched the final 1.1 and walked two.

Sybil Lozano started in the circle and took the no decision, as she allowed one hit, two earned runs, and one walk.
