CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas women’s tennis team was back in action on Sunday, playing just their second match in the last month. The Bears showed little rust however, handing the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions the first Southland Conference loss of the season, winning 4-3 at the Hendrix Indoor Tennis Center.
As they have done in every match except one this season, the Bears (6-1, 1-1 SLC) took the doubles point to grab an early lead. Kelsey Williams and Allison Murphy pushed their record to 7-0 on the year, taking down Lucia Bustamante and Dany Raygadas 8-0 in the no. 2 match, while Bianca Strukelj and Kristina Horsikyan improved to 5-1 with an 8-2 victory over Natalie Duran and Margaux Kaltenbacher in the no. 3 match. The no. 1 match between UCA’s Nataly Yoo and Cassidy Crawford and SLU’s Anna Bryhukhova and Renee Villareal went unfinished.
During the first flight of singles play, the Bears pushed their lead to 3-1. Williams moved to 7-1 on the year with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Bryuhkova in the no. 2 match, and Horsikyan took down Bustamente 6-2, 6-3 in the no. 3 match to improve to 5-1 on the year. SLU (5-2, 2-1 SLC) got their first point of the day in the no. 1 match, when Yoo was forced to retire in her no. 1 match against Villareal.
In the second flight of singles matches, the Lady Lions tied the match at 3-3 with Raygadas defeating Crawford in the no. 5 match and Madina Vorotnikova defeating Amanda Alvarez in the no. 6 match. In the only match still going, Murphy came through for the Bears, taking down Kaltenbacher 6-2, 6-4 to secure the UCA win and move to 7-0 on the season.
Central Arkansas will host New Orleans tomorrow at 10:00 AM.

Northwestern State 5, UIW 2
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Aliona Ladutska and Emily Kerr swept their singles and doubles matches Saturday as reigning Southland Conference women's tennis champion Northwestern State powered past Incarnate Word 5-2 in a league match.
Ladutska and Kerr teamed to beat Malisa Vatanadilok and Maria Batchinsky by 8-3 at No. 3 doubles as NSU (5-6 overall, 2-0 in the Southland) claimed the doubles point. In singles, Ladutska posted a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 3 over Sarah Savedra while Kerr topped Batchinsky 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 6 match.
The Lady Demons locked up the doubles point with an 8-4 victory at No. 1 by Tatiana Larina and Natalie Krutova. Krutova quickly upped the match score to 2-0 by rolling 6-1, 6-0 in No. 2 singles over Maton Zemunik, and a 6-1, 6-1 Polina Ivanova triumph at No. 5 past Antea Dedic boosted NSU ahead 3-0.
Ladutska's singles victory followed to make it 4-0 and clinch the outcome.
Sunday, NSU battles the team that denied it two straight NCAA Tournament appearances, visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a matchup of the last two Southland Tournament champions. Bazhanova said Saturday's match was a good tuneup for Sunday's contest.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4, Stephen F. Austin 1
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team fell to Stephen F. Austin today, 4-1, to open Southland Conference play at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The Ladyjacks (6-4, 1-0 SLC) picked up the doubles point and garnered three singles wins to earn their first conference win of the season.
The women's team (6-5, 0-1 SLC) fell behind early after coming up short in doubles play. The Islanders picked up the first doubles match today as freshman Jelena Dzinic and senior Chelsea Horan teamed up for an 8-1 win over Denise Maxl and Macarena Acosta in No. 2 doubles for their fifth win this season. The sophomore pair of Judit Vives and Kerry Galhos were then edged out by Vivienne Kulicke and Valeria Terentyeva, 8-6, in No. 3 doubles. The deciding point then came down to No. 1 doubles where juniors Celia Rodriguez and Maider Martin dropped a nail-biter to Malena Gordo and Dhanielly Quevedo, 8-7 (2).
The Islanders quickly evened the score at 1-1 after Horan took care of business with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Julia Lorca in No. 6 singles. However, the Ladyjacks went on to win three straight singles matches to garner the win. Rodriguez fell 6-2, 6-2 to Maxl at No. 2 singles before Galhos dropped a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Terentyeva in the No. 5 slot. SFA then picked up the win after Martin fell short to Quevedo in a three-setter. The junior recorded a 6-2 first-set win before falling 6-4 in the second set and 6-2 in the third.
The women's team will return to action Sunday against Northwestern State (5-6, 2-0 SLC) in a rematch of last season's Southland Conference Tournament finals. The Lady Demons are coming off a 5-2 win over Incarnate Word today. Doubles play is slated for 10 a.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.

Nicholls 6, Lamar 1
BEAUMONT, Texas – Marie Aubert, Stephanie Barnett and Klara Skopac each won in both singles and doubles as the Nicholls State University women’s tennis team earned a 6-1 victory over Lamar on Saturday in Southland Conference action at the Thomas Family Tennis Center.
The win improved the Colonels’ record to 6-2 on the year and 2-0 in Southland play. Lamar fell to 3-7 and 0-3.
The teams split the first two doubles matches as Barnett and Skopac won at No. 1 over Katya Lapayeva and Carolina Maso, 8-3, but LU took the No. 2 match, 8-2. Aubert and Milou Pietersz then gave Nicholls a 1-0 lead with a close 8-6 victory over Stephanie Marchena and Hanna Elfving.
In singles, four of the victories for the Colonels came in straight sets. Barnett cruised on the No. 1 court with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Lapayeva and Aubert defeated Andrea Ivanovic at No. 3, 6-4, 7-5. On courts 5 and 6, Brock stayed undefeated in singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Elfving and Kateryna Nakonechna won 7-5, 6-2 against Marchena, respectively.
At No. 2, Skopac came out on top in a three-set battle against Anna Spengler. Skopac won the first set, 7-5, lost the second, 6-2, and took the tiebreaker by the score of 12-10. Pietersz also played in a three-set match at No. 4, but was defeated 11-9 in the tiebreaker.
The Colonels will wrap up the weekend with a Sunday match at Sam Houston State. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.

McNeese State 6, Sam Houston State 1
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The McNeese State women’s tennis team soared to another convincing victory on Saturday as the Cowgirls opened up Southland Conference play with a 6-1 win over Sam Houston State.
The win improved McNeese to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in league action while the loss dropped Sam Houston State to a 0-9 overall record and 0-3 mark in SLC play.
The Cowgirls picked up the first point of the match after dominating on the doubles side of play. The No. 1 combo of Klaudia Gawlik and Anastasija Trubich cruised to their third straight victory after defeating the team of Olivia Battye and Karen Martinez 8-1. Hannah Brett and Julia Kral took down Mila Milanovic and Maddie Mortimore 8-3 in the second spot while the point was clinched with the victory of Vivien Borbely and Sarah Jurakova over Caitlin Mitchell and Bailey VanDyke 8-4. The win improves Borbely and Jurakova’s team record to 4-0 on the season.
In singles, Gawlik defeated Battye on Court 1 with a 6-3, 6-2 decision for her fifth straight win while Brett took a win in the third spot with a 7-6, 6-3 defeat of Milanovic to improve to 5-3 overall on the year. Borbely picked up her first singles victory of the season after beating VanDyke in three sets 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7). Jurakova also scored her first singles win of the season with a 6-0, 1-6, 6-3 victory in the fifth spot while Trubich rounded out the conference opening win with a 6-3, 6-4 win on Court 6.
The only loss of the day came in the second spot as Kral dropped a tough three-set match that snapped a streak of five consecutive singles victories.
McNeese will be back in action Sunday as the Cowgirls travel to Beaumont to take on Lamar. First serve is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
