Nicholls 1, Lamar 0
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team earned a 1-0 win in a nonconference matchup against Lamar University, and the team's silent auction of game-worn green St. Patrick's Day jerseys earned nearly $8,000 for Mr. Joe Faiker's bone marrow transplant on Tuesday night at Ray E. Didier Field.

The Colonels (11-7-1, 3-3 SLC) were locked in a defensive battle with the Cardinals (7-12, 0-6 SLC) throughout the night, and Nicholls' lone run in the fourth inning proved to be the difference in the series-opener.

In the frame, Marc Frazier notched a single up the middle, and came home when Kyle Reese crushed a deep shot to left center. Both squads went scoreless over the remainder of the contest.

Righty Ryan Deemes (3-0) earned the win, tossing seven scoreless innings with six hits and six strikeouts. Robbie Pettyand Stuart Holmes were dominant in relief, fanning five batters over the final two frames. Holmes' registered his seventh save of the season and moved into a tie for third in the nation for total saves this year.

Jayson McKinley (0-1) took the loss for Lamar, surrendering four hits with a run and a strikeout through four innings of work.

Justin Holt led the Colonels offensively with a 2-for-4 night. Frazier was 1-for-3 with a run and Reese finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Kevin Santana hit 2-for-4 to pace the Cardinals.

Nicholls will host Lamar at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, before hitting the road for a three-game conference series against Sam Houston State this weekend. Wednesday's game will be carried live on KTIB 640 AM.

Oklahoma State 3, Central Arkansas 1
STILLWATER, Okla. _ The No. 19 Oklahoma State Cowboys used an 11-hit attack to down the University of Central Arkansas Bears 3-1 in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Reynolds Stadium.

The Cowboys scored their first two runs on and error and a bases-loaded hit by pitch  in the fourth inning, and a safety squeeze bunt in the fifth inning. UCA got one run back in the sixth inning when junior Tyler Langley led off with a walk, went to second on junior Braxton Phillips’ sacrifice bunt and scored on senior Nate Ferrell’s single to right field.

OSU added the final run in the eighth on Gage Green’s RBI single through the right side of the infield that brought home Ryan Sluder, who had doubled.

Ferrell finished with two of UCA’s four hits. Freshman righthander Dillon Drabble (0-1) took the loss for the Bears in his first start, despite allowing just four hits and no earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. Junior Bo Stitch held the Cowboys scoreless for three innings of relief as UCA used five pitchers.

Four OSU starters had two hits each as the Cowboys finished with 11. Starter Remey Reed got the win for OSU to improve to 2-0 on the year.

The Bears, who beat the Cowboys 11-3 in their last meeting in 2013, return to Southland Conference action on Friday at Houston Baptist. The first-place Bears and Huskies will play at 2 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Baylor 4, Sam Houston State 3 (10)
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Hunter Courson smashed a two-run go-ahead home run in the sixth inning but the lead didn’t hold up as Baylor beat Sam Houston 4-3 in 10 innings Tuesday at Don Sanders Stadium. The Bearkats and Bears will complete the midweek series at Baylor Ballpark Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Making his fifth start of the season and just his second at third base, Courson put together his best performance of the season, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. The sophomore nearly gave the Kats a 4-3 lead in the eighth with a solo home run but the ball died at the warning track.

Starting pitcher Seth Holbert gave up two runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings pitched.

The first run of the game came around in the top of the first. Baylor center fielder Logan Brown started the ballgame with a single and a stolen base. He moved to third on a fly out to right field and scored on a single by designated hitter Cameron Miller.

Baylor added another run in the second inning when catcher Matt Menard opened the frame with a single up the middle and shortstop Justin Arrington followed with a walk. The Bears’ second baseman and nine-hole hitter drove in Menard with a soft single through the right side of the infield.

With runners on the corners and two outs, right fielder Travis Lee made a great grab in the gap to save two more runs from coming across.

A two-out double to left field ended Holbert’s night. Lefthander Hayden Nixon was called on out of the bullpen and he delivered with a strikeout to end the inning. Nixon struck out two more batters in a perfect top of the fourth inning. In all he worked 3 1/3 scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out three.

Right fielder Dylan Ebbs walked to start the fourth and moved to third on a single by designated hitter Trevor Winne. The Bearkat DH was thrown out trying to advance to second.

Catcher Collin Yelich drove in Ebbs with a single right up the middle of the infield to cut the Baylor lead in half, 2-1.

Greg Belton came out of the bullpen for the seventh inning and the Bears tied the game 3-3 on an RBI groundout by designated hitter Mitch Price.

Jordan Church then tossed a scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth. But Baylor first baseman Aaron Dodson opened the tenth with a single and was pinch run for. Runner Jonathan Ducoff immediately stole second base and moved to third on an errant throw.

Alex Bisacca came in from the bullpen and got a strikeout of the first batter but a couple of tough breaks allowed Baylor to grab a 4-3 lead.

The Kats had a great chance to prevent extra innings from even happening when center fielder Bryce Johnson led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and was sacrificed to second base. After an intentional walk of Travis Lee, Baylor turned to Daniel Castano out of the bullpen and he did the job getting two outs.

Southern Mississippi 6, New Orleans 5 (11)
NEW ORLEANS, La.  The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (8-12, 2-4 Southland) scored two runs in the tenth inning to extend the game, but wound up falling 6-5 in 11 to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (12-7-1, 2-1 C-USA) on Tuesday night at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark.

The Privateers came back from a 5-3 deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th. The tying run came across on a passed ball and New Orleans had the winning run 90 feet away on a subsequent error. However, Ryan Milton induced a ground out to short to push the game to the 11th inning.

In the game-deciding inning, the Golden Eagles got the first two runners aboard on a single and a double. With one out and the bases loaded after an intentional walk, Breck Kline hit a fly ball deep to right for a sacrifice fly that brought across the go-ahead run.

The bottom half of the frame saw a lead-off single by Matt Rykaczewski, but he was later erased on the base paths. The next two batters were retired on ground outs to short by Connor O’Brien who picked up the save.

“I’m really proud of my guys, but we didn’t handle a couple of bunt situations the right way and we practice that same double steal that they executed and we didn’t handle it well. We made young mistakes but we’re getting better,” said Coach Ron Maestri.

New Orleans carried a 3-2 lead into the eighth inning, but back-to-back walks drawn by the Golden Eagles set up what would be a game-tying RBI sac fly off the bat of Nick Dawson. On the night, both of Dawson’s RBIs came on sacrifice flies.

The Privateers have been involved in three extra-inning games and have come up on the short end of all three. The Privateers bullpen pitched 7.2 innings and allowed just four hits, but also issued six free passes. Offensively, Ryan Calloway, Preston Marsh, and Jonathan Coco each had two hits. Calloway scored twice and Coco drove in a pair of runs including the first of the night back in the first inning.

For Southern Miss, Taylor Braley led the way in the hit column, going 3-for-6.  Austin Roussel provided two hits and scored twice. The Golden Eagles had four stolen bases and executed a double steal in the fourth inning.

The Privateers jump back into conference play on Friday against Lamar. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.

Alabama A&M 9, Abilene Christian 5
ABILENE, Texas – Just like in so many of their previous 15 games this season, the ACU Wildcats on Tuesday night were within one hit of getting their game against Alabama A&M tied or potentially taking the lead.

But like in most of those games, the Wildcats couldn’t get a timely hit when they needed it, and it spelled their doom in a 9-5 loss to the Bulldogs in a non-conference game at Crutcher Scott Field. The two teams will close out their short two-game series Tuesday at 2 p.m. at ACU.

The win pushes the Bulldogs to 12-7 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 2-14 on the season. ACU is now 1-10 in games decided by four runs or less, including 0-4 in one-run games and 0-5 in two-run games.

Despite the final four-run deficit Tuesday night, the Wildcats had their chances against the Bulldogs, despite falling behind 5-0 in the top of the first, thanks to three walks by starter Austin Lambright, a two-run single by Andrew Utterback, a two-run double by Trea Nelson and an RBI fielder’s choice by Dustin Dhanani.

Lambright (0-2) threw his first two pitches of the night for strikes and then threw 12 straight balls to load the bases and earn the hook from head coach Britt Bonneau, who took his starter out of the game after seeing just three hitters. ACU’s bullpen of Landon Holifield, Drew Hanson and Nick Palacios pitched well enough to allow the Wildcats to creep back into the game.

After the Bulldogs tacked on another run in the top of the second to make it 6-0, the Wildcats got three runs back in the bottom of the second with all three coming in on Tyler Eager’s two-out, bases-clearing double to centerfield, cutting the lead to 6-3. The Bulldogs answered with a run in the fourth before ACU got a run in the fifth and one in the seventh to make it 7-5.

In the eighth inning, the Wildcats appeared to have a golden opportunity to at least cut the lead to one run and maybe tie it or take the lead when the two leadoff hitters – Brayden Gomez and Colton Hall – reached base on singles to give ACU runners at first and second with no outs.

That’s when Utterback – Alabama A&M’s right fielder and closer – came into the game from the outfield and struck out Mason Spracklen, Kyle Carroll and pinch-hitter Heath Beasley to end the Wildcats’ threat. Those three strikeouts – plus another one of Cody Huson to lead off the ninth – gave Alabama A&M’s pitching staff 10 strikeouts against the Wildcats, who have now struck out 164 times as a team in 148 innings of play.

The Bulldogs tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth, and despite a one-out double in the ninth by Eager, the Wildcats couldn’t push a run across against Utterback, who picked up his third save of the season.

The Wildcats had their chances against the Bulldogs, but they left nine runners on base, including three in the first, one in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, two in the eighth and one in the ninth.

Huson – the son of former major league shortstop Jeff Huson – had one hit and scored twice in his first action with the Wildcats. Eager was 3 for 5 with three RBI, while Hall was 3 for 3 with a walk and one run scored for the Wildcats.

Kansas State 3, Stephen F. Austin 2
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin baseball team gave Kansas State all they could handle on Tuesday night at Jaycees Field, but the Lumberjacks fell just short in a 3-2 defeat. The `Jacks drop to 6-16 on the year with the loss, but will get another shot at the Wildcats (11-9) on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.

The Lumberjacks were first to the punch on Tuesday evening as Dan O'Neill broke a scoreless tie with a home run to right-center in the second inning. The solo shot - O'Neill's first of the season - gave SFA an early 1-0 lead.

A two-run triple by Steve Serratore and a suicide squeeze play in the sixth inning helped K-State jump ahead 3-1.

Kyle Thornell helped SFA gain a run back in the seventh inning, launching a solo home run over the wall in right field with one away in the frame. After his second long ball of the year made it a 3-2 ballgame, the `Jacks threatened to tie the game or take the lead. Brandon Smith followed Thornell with a single to short, O'Neill walked, and the pair advanced 90 feet on a double steal later in the inning. In a pinch hit situation, Hunter Wilson took one for the team, loading the bases on a hit by pitch with two outs.

The `Jacks would leave the bases loaded, however, missing their best chance to mount a rally the rest of the night.

SFA sent seven different pitchers to the mound on the night, and the platoon effort proved to be effective for most of the contest. Patrick Day started the game with three scoreless innings before Ryan Manz, Grant Page,Will Boozer, Cody Adams and Brett Burrington each contributed a scoreless inning of relief. The five relievers allowed just one hit between them.

The Lumberjacks surrendered four hits overall on the night, while connecting for eight hits on the offensive side of things.

Travis Stone (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs on two hits in the sixth inning, despite making some big pitches.

Kyle Halbohn (2-1) picked up the win for K-State. He gave up one run on four hits in six innings of work.
Matthew Dickey and O'Neill each had two hits for SFA to lead the `Jacks at the plate. While great defense was displayed all night by both teams, a sliding grab by the centerfielder was the defensive play of the game.

SFA and K-State will finish the non-conference series on Wednesday night at Jaycees Field. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.

 Iowa 7, Houston Baptist 2
HOUSTON, Texas – Iowa jumped out to an early lead and took advantage of four HBU errors to claim the series finale, 7-2, and earn a split in the four-game non-conference baseball series Tuesday afternoon at Husky Field.

Senior third baseman Curtis Jones was 2-for-4 for the Huskies (9-11), while junior leftfielder Austin Saenz and senior rightfielder Thomas Clay each doubled.

Jake Mangler was 2-for-5 with a double and drove in two for the Hawkeyes (12-4), while Nick Roscetti was 2-for-4 with a double, drove in a run and scored one. Eric Toole was 2-for-4 and scored, while Eric Schenck-Joblinske walked twice and scored twice.

Nick Allgeyer (2-0) picked up the win for Iowa, throwing two innings of relief, while junior Brody Toal (0-2) took the loss for HBU. Each team used six pitchers.

Toole led off the game for Iowa with a double, went to third on a groundout and scored on a dropped fly ball, which allowed Kris Goodman to go all the way to third. Goodman scored on a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0.

The Hawkeyes added three more in the second, as Sean Moore led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a failed pickoff attempt. Roscetti added an RBI double and Mangler had an RBI infield single to put Iowa ahead, 5-0.

HBU scored in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by junior second baseman Justin Monsour and again in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Alvarez.

The Huskies return to Southland Conference play when they host first-place Central Arkansas in a three-game series Friday through Sunday at Husky Field.
