SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Lamar women’s tennis team used a hot start to scoot by South Carolina-Upstate 5-2 and snapped a six-game skid on Tuesday at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex in non-conference action.
 
The Lady Cards (4-8) have a quick turnaround as Thursday’s match against Mercer was moved up a day due to the high percentage of rain forecasted in the area.  The match will be played at 2:30 on Wednesday.
 
Lamar started off with a dominating doubles win on court two from Anna Spengler and Andrea Ivanovic.  The two defeated Nina Roell and Deshmukh 8-1.
 
The duo is 3-3 on the season, all from the second position.
 
The No. 1 doubles sealed the point for LU on an 8-4 win from Katya Lapayeva and Carolina Maso over Isabel Von Stryk and Nona Ruppert. The team extended its win streak to two, and improved to 3-4 on the season and 3-4 on line one.
 
Despite having the point locked, both coaches agreed to let line three continue its tight match, and it ended in a tiebreak. Freshman Stephanie Marchena and sophomore Hanna Elfving won 8-7 over Anna Zoske and Sarah vande Berg.
 
Five of the matches went two sets and Lamar won four of them.
 
Marchena gave the Lady Cards a 2-0 lead when she downed Deshmukh quickly, 6-1, 6-2 on line five. Not too long after, Elfving pushed the score to 3-0 with a quick 6-2 win in set one, but a tight 7-6 win in game two.  Both Marchena and Elfving, played up a court after Maso was scratched due to an injury.
 
Teodora Stefanovic also had to play up a line, and defeated vande Berg on court six, 7-6, 6-3.
 
The match was clinched on No. 3 singles, Ivanovic’s win over Zoske, 6-4, 7-5.  She improved her singles mark to 4-8 on the season, and 2-4 on line three.  It was her second singles win in as many matches.
 
Von Stryk battled back from a 1-0 deficit on line one in singles to get by Lapayeva 5-7, 6-3, 6-0. Nona Rupert defeated Anna Spengler on No. 2 singles, 7-6, 6-4.
 
Lamar continues its non-conference break at Louisiana-Lafayette after Mercer.  It visits the Ragin Cajuns on March 25 at 11 o’clock.

Southeastern Louisiana 6, Southeast Missouri State 0
HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women’s tennis team rolled to a 6-0 victory over Southeast Missouri in a non-conference match Tuesday night at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
 
Because of the late start of the rescheduled match, the match started with singles play. SLU (7-2) made sure doubles would not be necessary by winning all six singles matches in straight sets. SEMO fell to 1-11 this spring with the loss.
 
The match was originally scheduled for Wednesday at 1 p.m. but was moved up to Tuesday at 8 p.m. to avoid Wednesday’s forecast rainy weather.
 
Southeastern took a 1-0 lead when junior Renee Villarreal defeated SEMO’s Mariya Kostyuk, 6-2, 6-2 on the No. 1 court. The win improved her singles record to 9-0 this spring and 47-4 in her Lion career.
 
Freshman Dany Raygadas (7-1) rolled to her sixth straight victory to give SLU a 2-0 lead. She was too much for Anna Makhneva, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5.
 
At No. 6, freshman Madina Vorotnikova (7-1) put Southeastern on the brink of victory. Her sixth straight singles victory – a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Annisa Warasanti – put the Lions ahead, 3-0.
 
Freshman Anna Bryukhova (3-5) clinched the match for the Lions on the No. 2 court. She was pleased with her effort in a 6-4, 6-1 win over Viviana Ortiz.
 
Southeastern freshman Lucia Bustamante improved to 7-2 this spring with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 victory over Kateryna Stoianova on the No. 3 court. Sophomore Margaux Kaltenbacher (4-4) closed out the shutout with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Maria Montenegro.
 
Southeastern’s scheduled match on Wednesday at 6 p.m. versus Alcorn State has been rescheduled for April 4 at 5 p.m. SLU will be back in action on Saturday, hosting Southland Conference foe Incarnate Word at 11 a.m. on the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

THIBODAUX, La. – Making their 2015 home debut, the Nicholls State University women’s tennis team put together a pair of dominating performances in front of their home fans at the Colonel Tennis Complex as the Colonels swept their a doubleheader against Xavier (La.) and Southeast Missouri State at the by winning each match, 4-0.
 
With the victories, Nicholls improved to 9-2 on the year. The Colonels will look continue their hot streak on Thursday at McNeese State. The Colonels enter the matchup 3-0 in Southland play, while the Cowgirls sit at 2-0.
 
Although the Colonels shutout Xavier in the first match, the Gold Nuggets made the Red and Gray earn the doubles point with three close matches. Xavier started out with an 8-6 win on the No. 2 court, but Laia Charles and Emma Kranendonk evened the score with an 8-6 victory at No. 3. With the point up for grabs, Kateryna Nakonechna and Isla Brock narrowly defeated Caroline Vernet / Simone-Alyse Ewell on the No. 1 court, 8-7, to give Nicholls a 1-0 lead.
 
In singles, Nicholls quickly clinched the team victory by taking the first three completed matches. Milou Pietersz won at No. 2 over Carmen Nelson, 6-2, 6-0, Stephanie Barnett took the No. 1 court by retirement and Nakonechna ended the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 versus Brandi Nelson.
 
Against Southeast Missouri, the outcomes were the same but the scores were a little more lopsided. Barnett and Klara Skopac dominated the No. 1 court in doubles, 8-1, while Nakonechna / Brock won 8-2 at No. 3.
 
Brock stayed undefeated on the year in singles, picking up her sixth win with a 6-0, 6-1 victory on the No. 3 court. Nakonechna won both of her sets on the No. 4 court, 6-1, and Charles took her first set, 6-3, before winning by retirement at No. 6.
