ABILENE, Texas – The Central Arkansas Bears and Abilene Christian Wildcats took the field for the second game of their three game series on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats took a lead early, but just like in the first game of the series, the Bears battled back to get the victory, this time taking down the Wildcats 6-4.

In the day’s first game, Abilene Christian (5-20, 1-7 SLC) grabbed a 2-0 lead thanks to a throwing error in the first and a home run in the fourth.

Centerfielder Amy Gunnells got the Bears (20-7, 8-0 SLC) on the board in the top of the fifth, putting her second home run is as many days off the scoreboard in left field to cut the Wildcat lead to 2-1.

The Central Arkansas offense exploded in the top of the sixth, plating five runs on three hits and an error to take a 6-1 lead. Catcher Jessie Taylor got the inning started with a single through the left side. Left fielder Hannah Stirton then roped a double down the left field line to move pinch runner Brianna McArthur to third base. After a sacrifice fly from designated player Audrey Pratt drove in McArthur, shortstop Hayley Parker hit her first home run of the season to put the Bears up 4-2. Following a Wildcat pitching change, the Bears reloaded the bases on walks from first baseman Ashley Boswell, Gunnells, and third baseman Sam Forrest. A wild pitch, combined with a throwing error brought in pinch runner Ryan Holdiness and Gunnells to complete the inning’s scoring.

ACU got two runs back in the bottom of the frame, getting a runner on an error, and then scoring a pair on a two-run bomb from shortstop Peyton Hedrick.

The Bears went down in order in the top of the seventh, but the Wildcats threatened in the bottom of the inning, getting a leadoff single and putting another runner on thanks to a UCA error, but Central Arkansas starter Kylee Studioso erased the threat with a popout and a groundout to end the game.

Gunells went 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored to lead the Central Arkansas offense, while Forrest went 2-for-3 with a walk.

Studioso (16-3) earned the win with her 18th complete game of the season, allowing two earned runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six Wildcats. Julia Montoya (2-4) took the loss for ACU, giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk in 5.1 innings. Emily Seidel worked 1.2 innings of relief, surrendering a pair of unearned runs on three walks.

The Bears and the Wildcats were originally supposed to wrap up the series this afternoon, but rain forced the game to be postponed. The squads will instead try to play at noon on Sunday.
