HAMMOND, La. – In a game of multiple lead changes, Southeastern Louisiana scored in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field to knock off the University of Louisiana at Monroe, 7-6, for its fifth-straight win.
Southeastern (20-7) had already come from behind three times in the game to either tie or take the lead over ULM (12-10) when it scored the winning run in the eighth on a play at the plate.
The Warhawks scored first, pushing across a single run in the second inning on a pair of doubles, but Southeastern answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning.
Ryan Byers bounced a double down the left-field line with two outs and scored on Webb Bobo's single over the shortstop's glove into left to tie the game.
ULM came right back to take the lead in the top of the third when first baseman Danny Springer doubled in two, putting the Warhawks up 3-1 in the game.
The Lions wasted no time responding. Jacob Seward singled to right field leading off the bottom of the third. Jacob Williams drew a walk and Seward moved to third on a pair of wild pitches during Williams' plate appearance.
With runners on the corners and no outs, Daniel Midyett lined a 2-0 pitch over the right-field wall for his Southland Conference-leading sixth home run of the season. The three-run shot staked Southeastern to a 4-3 lead.
Seward started another run-scoring rally for the Lions in the fourth. With two outs, the sophomore from New Orleans, Louisiana, singled up the middle. He advanced to second on Williams bunt hit to third base. Midyett was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.
With a 1-0 count on Kevin Carr at the plate, Seward got a great jump on Warhawk reliever Keegan Curtis and stole home. Williams and Midyett followed as the Lions executed a triple steal.
ULM would not go away quietly, however, scoring an unearned run in the fifth and then taking back the lead with a pair of sixth-inning runs.
Southeastern tied the game, and almost took the lead, in the seventh. Williams led off the inning with a single to left and then stole second base. He scored to tie the game, 6-6, on Brett Hoffman's two-out single up the middle.
With Chris Eades at the plate next, Hoffman almost scored from first to give the Lions the lead. He took off for second on a wild pitch and the throw from the catcher sailed into center field, allowing Hoffman to head for third. Charging in, center fielder Nathan Pugh misplayed the ball, and coach Matt Riser waved Hoffman home. Backing up the play, right fielder Justin Stawychny hit the cutoff man on the throw back in and the relay to the plate was in time to catch Hoffman to end the inning.
The Lions took the lead for good in the eighth. Byers drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on Bobo's single past the first baseman. Julian Service, pinch-running for Bobo, stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position for Kennon Menard.
Menard chopped a grounder to first and the throw home beat Byers, but ULM catcher Dalton Todd dropped the ball allowing Byers to score the eventual winning run.
Kade Granier (3-1), the fifth of six Lions pitchers in the game, earned the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Domenick Carlini earned his second save, in as many outings, working a scoreless ninth to nail down the win. Josh Leone (1-1) was the hard-luck loser, surrendering an unearned run in his only inning of work.
Seward (3-for-4) tied a career high with three hits. Bobo (2-for-4), Byers (2-for-3) and Williams (2-for-4) also turned in multi-hit performances at the plate for the Lions.
Southeastern returns to conference play Friday 6 p.m. against Nicholls State in the opener of a three-game series. The split series will be played Friday and Sunday (1 p.m.) in Thibodaux, Louisiana, and Saturday (3 p.m.) in Hammond.

Northwestern State 13, Mississippi Valley State 0
NATCHITOCHES, La. – Northwestern State pitchers struck out a season-high 14 batters and the Demons offense rapped out a season-high 17 hits as the Demons began a two-game, midweek series with a 13-0 victory against Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday night at Brown-Stroud Field.
The Demons (13-10) jumped to a 2-0 lead after an inning, using the momentum gathered by an inning-ending double play started by Joel Atkinson to end the top of the first.
Atkinson led off the first with a single, took second when Cort Brinson was hit by a pitch and third when Chase Daughdrill walked to load the bases.
A David Fry fielder’s choice scored Atkinson before C.J. Webster followed with an RBI single off Delta Devils starter Connor Sheppeard (0-1).
That was enough for Jeffrey Stovall (3-2), who worked a scoreless two innings in the Demons’ preset rotation.
Josh Morris, Brandon Stane and Devin Bear followed with two scoreless innings each before Jordan Shaffer finished off the seven-hit shutout with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Demons put together four-hit innings in the fourth (two runs) and sixth innings (three runs) to produce their second straight win. Northwestern State polished off the win with a six-run ninth inning.

Houston Baptist 6, Prairie View A&M 0
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – HBU senior designated hitter Samm Wiggins rocked a three-run home run in the top of the third inning to lift the Huskies to their fourth-straight victory, 6-2, over Prairie View A&M Tuesday afternoon at Tankersley Field.
Wiggins went 2-for-4, driving in three, hitting his team-leading third home run of the season and the seventh of his career for the Huskies (13-11). Freshman catcher Zac Garcia made his first start behind the dish and went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run. Senior centerfielder Zach Nehrir was 2-for-5 with a double and a run and junior shortstop Louie Payetta scored twice.
Junior righthander Matt Harding (1-0) picked up the win for HBU, throwing an inning and a third of relief. Junior lefthander Weston Wick started for the Huskies and gave up two runs on three hits in four and two-thirds innings. Junior Dylan Zarosky and seniors Brandon Hammerly and Chris Garza each tossed a scoreless inning.
Grant Dougherty went 2-for-3 with a home run for the Panthers (7-15), while Cody Den Beste drove in the other run.
Charles Philpott (1-3) took the loss for PVAMU, allowing five runs on five hits with four strikeouts and five walks in five innings. Jordan Johnson and Dougherty each threw two innings, with Dougherty allowing an unearned run.
Philpott walked the bases loaded in the top of the first and Garcia lifted a sacrifice fly to center to give the Huskies the lead. Dougherty answered in the bottom of the frame with an opposite-field solo shot down the rightfield line to tie the game.
Nehrir led off the third with a single, stole second, then Payetta drew a walk. Senior third baseman Curtis Jones sacrificed them over with a bunt, then Wiggins unloaded a bomb to left to put the Huskies ahead, 4-1.
HBU added a run in the fifth when Jones drew a lead-off walk and Wiggins and Garcia delivered back-to-back singles to make the score 5-1. Connor Wrye drew a leadoff walk and Kevin Lehaie followed with a single as PVAMU threatened in the bottom of the inning, but managed to only score one on a sacrifice fly by Den Beste.
The Huskies put one more on the board in the eighth as Garcia walked and junior Christian Cokinos laid down a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error put both runners in scoring position. Senior Clayton Vaughn lifted a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to center for the game’s final tally as the Huskies swept the four-game season series from the Panthers.
The Huskies return to action when they travel to face Incarnate Word in a three game Southland Conference series Friday through Sunday at Daniel Sullivan Field in San Antonio. All three games will be broadcast live on HBUHuskies.com.

Rice 4, Sam Houston State 0
HOUSTON, Texas -- Rice used a three-run seventh inning to beat Sam Houston, 4-0, Tuesday night at Reckling Park. The Bearkats will have the opportunity to get revenge against the Owls Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium.
Sam Odom was outstanding for six innings and held Rice to just four hits to start the ballgame. Unfortunately for Sam Houston the Owls got to Odom in the seventh inning.
After a pair of one-out singles in the seventh, third baseman Tristan Gray smashed a three-run home run to right field to drive in the winning runs. The Owls added an insurance run in the ninth inning after a walk, hit batter, a bunt single and an error.
The Bearkats mustered just two hits in the game against a combination of Dane Myers, Austin Solecitto and Glenn Otto.
Myers started and tossed 4 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts. Solecitto was on the mound for 1 2/3 innings. Otto pitched three perfect innings with five strikeouts to earn the win.
Right fielder Bryce Johnson and designated hitter Dylan Ebbs were the two Bearkats with hits in the game. Center fielder Colt Atwood reached twice in the game with two walks. Left fielder Hayden Simerly and catcher Colin Yelich each worked one walk.
Reliever Greg Belton pitched one scoreless inning of relief. He didn’t allow a hit but did walk one batter.

Houston 6, Lamar 5 (10)
HOUSTON, Texas - A furious, two-inning rally from 15th-ranked Houston in the eighth and ninth innings tied the game at 5-5, and Ian Rice's RBI-single to center field gave the Cougars a 6-5 win over the Lamar baseball team Tuesday night at Cougar Field in non-conference action.
Enrique Oquendo, who bailed the Cardinals (11-13, 3-6 Southland Conference) out in the 9th inning, sat down the first two batters he saw in the bottom of the 10th, but walked Josh Vidales and gave up a single to Chris Iriart before he was pulled for Galen Andrews. After working a 3-1 count, Rice lined one to center field that hit just in front of a diving Brendan Satran's glove and rolled to the wall to improve UH to 18-7.
Down 5-0, Iriat started the eighth inning rally after he was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Montemayor singled through the right side. Wong was walked to load the bases and Iriat was able to score when Kyle Leggett uncorked a wild pitch.
Jacob Campbell punched in another run (Montemayor) with a single through the right side, and Wong took third on the single before he scored on a groundout to the right side from Ashford Fulmer. Joe Farley entered to relieve the Leggett and forced Zac Taylor into a groundout to end the inning.
Farley stayed on for the ninth inning and immediately gave up a leadoff single to Kyle Survance, who took second base on a balk. Josh Vidales walked, and both moved up on a wild pitch. Ryan Cawthon took the hill with two on and no outs and loaded the bases after he hit Iriat with a pitch.

Louisiana-Lafayette 6, McNeese State 5 (11)
LAKE CHARLES, La. – Well, you know what they say? If there is a contest between the McNeese State baseball team and the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns, chances are that the game will extend beyond the prescribed nine innings.
That is exactly what happened on Tuesday evening as the Cowboys (16-9) battled the rival Cajuns (13-8) to 11 innings in front of a capacity crowd of 1,837 spectators that saw the Cajuns outlast the Pokes, 6-5.
The announced attendance was the sixth largest in Cowboy Diamond history.
It was the second time this season that the two squads battled in extra innings with the Pokes picking up a 5-4 win in 17 innings in Lafayette on February 24.
Austin Briggs (1-1) was charged with the loss after tossing the last inning and gave up the winning run. Briggs was declared the winner in the first meeting against UL-Lafayette.
Senior outfielder Andrew Guillotte led all McNeese batters with three hits in the game along with a double and two runs scored. First baseman Connor Crane, shortstop Connor Lloyd and third baseman Kris Molter each turned in two hits on the night.
After jumping out to a four run lead in the first three innings of the game, McNeese (16-9) surrendered a pair of runs to UL-Lafayette (13-8) in the fourth and fifth frames that abled the Cajuns to knot up the score at five runs apiece.
Crane and Lloyd knocked in runs during the first inning to help the Cowboys to a two run lead while Lloyd, Joe Provenzano and Lewis Guilbeau helped extend the McNeese score in the third inning with an RBI each.
Both team’s entered a pitcher’s duel during the last four innings of regulation as the Cajuns’ Colton Lee retired eight batters in a row at one point while McNeese’s Collin Kober retired four consecutive batters and then another string of three batters.
Kober tossed four innings total on the evening and was able to prevent any runs from scoring on just two hits and only one walk. He fanned six in the process.
In the top of the 11th inning, UL-Lafayette catcher Nick Thurman used a two-out hit by pitch to reach base and extend the frame for the visitors. On the next play, designated hitter Stefan Trosclair blasted a double into the outfield that allowed Thurman to power past third and slide into home and score the winning run for the Cajuns.
The Cowboys will be back in action this weekend when they return to Southland Conference action at Northwestern State. First pitch is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start on Friday, March 27 in Natchitoches.

Loyola 8, New Orleans 4
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (8-16, 2-7 Southland) gave up a six-run inning in an 8-4 loss to the Loyola Wolfpack (18-18, 5-13 SSAC) on Tuesday night at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark.
The Privateers got an early run when Ryan Calloway scored on an RBI ground out off the bat of Jonathan Coco in the first. However, Loyola busted through with six runs in the third inning that started on three consecutive singles. An RBI fielder’s choice by Rawlings Elam tied the game at 1-1.
With Allen Newman batting next, the Privateers got a line out into a double play but it was called back on catcher’s interference. The inning continued and John Nicholson and Alexander Lorenzo each provided two-run knocks to push the Loyola lead to 6-1.
“Congratulations to them. They played hard and Doug does a great job. They just beat us. That inning, we don’t cover first, we have a double play ball and we don’t get it. We’ve got to re-group and that’s all it is,” said Coach Ron Maestri.
The Privateers tried to mount a rally in the middle innings, scoring one in the fourth when a ground ball with bases loaded turned into an error on Nicholson. Stewart Campbell came back to record a strike out and get a line out double play to end the threat with minimal damage.
Trailing 7-2, New Orleans plated two in the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles. That’s when Coach Doug Faust made a call to the pen for Connor Thurman who came in and retired the next three batters to preserve the lead. Thurman pitched the final five innings and picked up the win.
Hezekiah Randolph and Jay Robinson each picked up two hits for the Privateers. Randolph also drove in a run and scored a run. Calloway drew a pair of walks and scored a run. Coco and Preston Marsh each added an RBI.
For the Wolfpack, Alexander Lorenzo drove in three runs while Luis Angiuzola added three hits to the cause. Nicholson was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. The Wolfpack earned their first win over the Privateers since 1972.
New Orleans is back in action this weekend with a three-game series on the horizon against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. First pitch for the series opener on Friday is at 6:30 p.m.

West Virginia 14, Stephen F. Austin 5
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin baseball team allowed three home runs, including a grand slam in an eight-run first inning, as the Lumberjacks fell 14-5 to West Virginia on Tuesday afternoon at Jaycees Field. The loss drops the ‘Jacks to 7-18 this season and wraps up a four-game homestand.
The Mountaineers (11-10) did most of their damage in the first inning of Tuesday’s non-conference contest, scoring eight runs on five hits in the opening frame. After building a 2-0 lead, Shaun Wood hit a grand slam to right field and Taylor Munden hit a two-run home run to left to make it an 8-0 game before the ‘Jacks stepped to the plate.
SFA got on the board in the second inning on a string of Mountaineer miscues to cut the deficit to 8-1. Garrett McMullen and Kyle Thornell each got hit by an Adam Keller pitch to put two runners aboard. With Holden Holsomback at the plate, Keller threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt at first base and McMullen scampered home when the throw traveled into right field.
The Mountaineers added two more runs in the third and fifth innings to build their largest lead of the game at 12-1.
The ‘Jacks answered with three straight runs, starting in the fifth. Just as in the second, consecutive SFA batters – Thornell and Eric DeJesus – got hit by a pitch to start the inning. After both runners advanced 90 feet on a passed ball, Holsomback recorded the first hit of the game for the ‘Jacks – an RBI single to first base scoring Thornell. Brandon Smith followed with an RBI groundout to plate DeJesus, making it a 12-3 ballgame.
In the sixth, Cameron Salvaggio ripped a single to center and later scored on an RBI single off the bat of DeJesus, making it 12-4.
After West Virginia put up two more unearned runs in the seventh, SFA capped the scoring with a final run in the bottom of the ninth. Anthony Soriano doubled deep to the gap in right center, advanced a bag on a wild pitch and touched home on a fielding error to make it 14-5.
The Lumberjacks committed four errors and issued 10 walks on the afternoon.
SFA relief pitchers Chris Hassold, Travis Stone and Patrick Ledet closed the game strong, each tossing an inning. The trio didn’t surrender an earned run while limiting WVU to just one hit and striking out five batters.
Pat Day (0-1) took the loss for SFA while Seth Jordan (1-0) was credited with the winning decision for WVU.
The Lumberjacks will return to Southland Conference action this weekend when they travel to Corpus Christi for a three-game series with the Islanders starting on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m.

Dallas Baptist 11, Abilene Christian 6
ABILENE, Texas – Abilene Christian gave up six unearned runs and Dallas Baptist scored 10 two-out runs Tuesday night as the 15th-ranked Patriots knocked off the Wildcats, 11-6, in non-conference baseball action at Crutcher Scott Field.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 5-16 overall, while the Patriots improve to 19-3 with the win. ACU will be back in action this weekend with a non-conference series at Southland Conference rival Lamar. The games will be considered non-conference because it is each team’s open weekend, and they scheduled a three-game non-conference series in Beaumont.
ACU starting pitcher Austin Lambright was tagged with the loss after giving up three first-inning runs on three hits before getting out of the frame. Joe Gawrieh gave up two runs on two hits in the second inning, and then Nate Cole gave up one run in two innings of work as the Patriots jumped out to a 6-0 lead through 3 1/2 innings.
But the Wildcats struck back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth against DBU relief pitcher Landon Wilson, cutting the DBU lead to 6-4. Tyler Eager reached with a leadoff walk and then was safe at second on an error by DBU shortstop Camden Duzenack. Jeff Clarke then tripled to the right field corner to drive in both Eager and Alex Copeland to make it 6-2.
Taylor Waters then singled to drive in Clarke to make it 6-3, and later scored on another throwing error by Duzenack, making it a 6-4 game.
It appeared as though ACU’s third relief pitcher of the game – Brandon Lambright – would settle the game a bit when he retired the first two men he faced in the top of the fifth on just three pitches. But that’s when the bottom fell out for both Lambright and the ACU defense.
Lambright gave up back-to-back two-out walks and then threw a pitch that got past the Wildcats’ catcher, Copeland, to allow both runners to move into scoring position. Shortly after that, another passed scored Justin Wall and allowed David Martinelli to move to third base. And then with a two-strike count to Trooper Reynolds, another pitch got through Copeland for a passed, allowing Martinelli to score and Wall to reach first base. After Chane Lynch singled and moved Reynolds to third, ACU head coach Britt Bonneau brought in Nick Palacios to pitch to try and get the Wildcats out of the inning.
But on a 1-0 pitch, Tagg Duce who had three hits and drove in six runs – blasted a three-run home run just to the left of dead centerfield to drive in three more and put DBU on top 11-4. In the inning, DBU scored five two-out runs with only two hits while ACU had three passed balls and one wild pitch.
That frame matched the first four innings when the Wildcats gave up three runs in the first (two with two outs), a pair of two-out runs in the second and another two-out run in the fourth. In those four innings, the Wildcats committed three errors in the field and their pitchers allowed seven walks.
“We didn’t do a good job on the mound in the first two innings, but then we did some good things offensively in the fourth inning to get back in the game,” Bonneau said. “We just fell apart with two outs in the fifth inning. We’re putting young guys out on the field and putting them under the lights and asking them to perform. They have to learn, and they have to learn what it’s like to play under some pressure.”
ACU answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run double to left by Copeland to cut the lead to 11-6, but Copeland was left stranded at second and the Wildcats would only get four base runners the rest of the game as DBU’s final three relief pitchers – Jay Calhoun, Sean Stutzman and Brandon Koch – allowed just one hit and struck out seven over the final four innings.
The back end of the Wildcats’ bullpen was just as effective as Ladgie Zotyka (two innings) and Kevin Sheets (one inning) combined to allow just one single (a single by Duzenak off Sheets with two outs in the ninth) and strike out eight Patriots. Zotyka, in fact, struck out five of the six men he faced, and Sheets struck out the side in the top of the ninth.
Copeland and Clarke each had a pair of RBI for the Wildcats, while Clarke and Taylor Waters each had two hits for ACU.
