Lady Lions Pick Up 5-2 Win at Jackson State

Southeastern Louisiana 5, Jackson State 2
JACKSON, Miss. – Southeastern Louisiana freshmen Madina Vorotnikova and Natalie Duran earned wins in both singles and doubles play, as the Lion tennis team defeated Jackson State, 5-2, in a non-conference match Monday night at the JSU Tennis Facility.
 
Southeastern improved to 9-4 overall with the road win, dropping Jackson State to 4-13 overall. SLU had to rally after dropping the doubles point, winning five of six singles matches in straight sets.
 
JSU took the early lead by winning the doubles point. On the No. 3 court, Vorotnikova and Duran teamed for a 6-3 win over JSU’s Karina Ono and Rebekah Adewumi. However, the Lady Tigers countered with wins on the top two courts to take a 1-0 lead.
 
Southeastern would have to rally at singles play. At No. 1, Lion junior Renee Villarreal (13-0) remained undefeated with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Anastasia Zvyahinsteva. The win moved the Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico into a tie for 10th on the school’s career singles wins list at 51-4.
 
Vorotnikova (10-2) joined Villarreal among Lions with double-digit victories this spring, defeating Ono, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5. At No. 6, Duran moved to 2-0 as a Lion with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Adewumi.
 
SLU freshman Dany Raygadas (9-3) defeated Siriporn Phakamad at No. 4, 7-5, 6-3. At No. 2, sophomore Margaux Kaltenbacher evened her spring singles record at 6-6 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Ilona Zuishliuk.
 
Southeastern will be back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Southern for a 2 p.m. match.
