LAFAYETTE, La. – The McNeese State women’s tennis team delivered another dominating performance on the court Saturday as the Cowgirls posted their second straight shutout on the season with a 4-0 decision against Air Force in Lafayette.
The victory improved McNeese to a 4-4 overall mark on the season while the Cowgirls picked up their third straight win of the season. The loss dropped Air Force to 6-3 on the year and also broke a string of five straight victories by the Falcons.
A strong day was had by all on the Cowgirl squad with highlights coming from sophomore Julia Kral who secured her fourth consecutive singles win as well as junior Klaudia Gawlik who rolled out another solid performance on the court to win her fourth straight contest.
Since teaming up, the combo of sophomore Vivien Borbely and freshman Sarah Jurakova have strung together three straight wins in doubles action. Kral and freshman Hannah Brett improved to team best 4-1 overall mark on the season with their win against the Falcons.
McNeese took the early advantage in doubles with the No. 2 team of Kral and Brett defeating the combo of Lily Forlini and Mary Meyers 6-2 while Borbely and Jurakova secured the first point of the match with a dominating effort against Air Force’s Jocelle Rudico and Sierra Stapper.
The top three positions wrapped things up for the Cowgirls in singles action that started with a victory by Kral on Court Two against Meyers in a 6-4, 6-1 decision. Gawlik followed up with a win against Rizvi in the No. 1 spot 6-3, 6-4.
Once again, McNeese used the efforts of a newcomer to help them sweep the match as Brett took control of a well fought match to hang on defeat Chloe Forlini 7-5, 6-3 to clinch the match-winning point. With the win, Brett improved to 4-3 on the season with her second straight decision.
The Cowgirls will have to wait just a while longer to get their feet wet in league action. Sunday’s scheduled home match with Nicholls was postponed due to the threat of potential rain and now McNeese will host the Colonels on Thursday, March 19 at 2 p.m.

NATCHITOCHES, La. – A doubles sweep and a three-set singles win by Aliona Ladutska helped Northwestern State successfully begin defense of its 2014 Southland Conference women’s tennis championship Saturday with a 4-1 win over visiting Central Arkansas, followed by a 5-0 non-conference romp past Grambling.
The Lady Demons (4-6 overall, 1-0 in the Southland) lost only seven singles games to the Lady Tigers in the quick triumph following a solid Southland opener that handed UCA (5-1, 0-1) its first loss in its first match since Feb. 14 (due to winter weather).
NSU snagged the doubles point as Polina Ivanova and Barbora Kollarova won 8-4 at No. 2 following an 8-1 victory in the top position by Tatiana Larina and Natalya Krutova. Latudska and Emily Kerr notched an 8-4 win at No. 3 to complete the sweep.
Ladutska’s 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 triumph in the No. 3 singles over UCA’s Kristina Horsikyan ended the match.
Ivanova gave NSU its second point with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles, followed by Krutova closing out her No. 2 match 6-2, 6-2. UCA stayed alive with Allison Murphy’s 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 4 over Kollarova, but Ladutska sealed the outcome.
Against Grambling, Larina (No. 1), Krutova and Maria Vlaskina (No. 5) quickly notched 6-0, 6-0 singles wins, then Kollarova clinched the match with her 6-2, 6-0 No. 3 victory and Kerr finished at No. 4 6-3, 6-2 over Tabitha Nankya.
NSU will be on the road next weekend for conference matches at Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and is home again March 19 when Southeast Missouri State visits the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.

New Orleans 5, Lamar 2
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (7-5, 1-2) swept the doubles matches in Yasmine Rashad's return and held up solidly in singles to grab their first conference victory by a 5-2 count over the Lamar Lady Cardinals (3-5, 0-1) on Saturday at the University Tennis Center.
Marta Sans and Soledad Calderon Arroyo started the day by breezing to an 8-2 at the 1 position in doubles. Anja Luethi and Anna Segarra Rius capped off the first point of the day in the Privateers' favor by an 8-6 margin. The third doubles match went unfinished with New Orleans leading 6-5.
In singles, the Privateers landed on the winning side in two of the three matches that went three sets. Calderon and Segarra each recovered from dropping the first set in their respective matches to earn singles wins at the 1 and 4 positions respectively.
Sans also outlasted Andrea Ivanovic at the 3 spot. After breezing to a 6-2 decision in the first set, Sans was extended into a tiebreak in the second set that she won. Hafsa Laraibi also provided a singles win, coasting to a 6-1, 6-1 decision.
The Privateers will face Sam Houston State on Sunday at the University Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.

Southeastern Louisiana 6, Sam Houston State 1
HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women’s tennis team opened up Southland Conference play with an impressive 6-1 victory over Sam Houston State on Saturday at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
The Lions (3-1, 1-0 Southland) won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches to open league play on a high note. Sam Houston State fell to 0-7 overall and 0-1 in league play with the loss.
In doubles play, Southeastern won on the top two courts. At No. 2, freshmen Dany Raygadas and Lucia Bustamante improved to 3-0 on the spring with an 8-4 victory over Mila Milanovic and Maddie Mortimore. The doubles point came down to the No. 1 court, where SLU junior Renee Villarreal and freshman Anna Bryukhova overcame the Bearkat pairing of Olivia Battye and Karen Martinez, 8-6, to give SLU a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, Villarreal (4-0) pushed the lead to 2-0 with a quick 6-0, 6-4 decision over Battye at the No. 1 court. The two-time All-Southland performer remained undefeated this spring and ran her career singles record to 43-4.
Minutes later, freshman Madina Vorotnikova put Southeastern on the brink of victory with her second singles win of the spring. The Lion newcomer was too much for SHSU’s Caitlyn Mitchell in a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 6.
Bustamante clinched the match for the Lions on the No. 3 court. Improving to 4-0 on the spring, she handled Bailey Van Dyke, 6-1, 6-4.
After SHSU picked up its only singles win on the No. 1 court, Southeastern closed out the match with two singles wins. At No. 5, freshman Dany Raygadas picked up a straight set win over Mortimore, 6-3, 6-2. SLU sophomore Margaux Kaltenbacher closed out the victory on No. 4, bouncing back from a set down to defeat Martinez, 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.
The Lions will be look to start Southland Conference play with a 2-0 record on Sunday, when it hosts Lamar at 11 a.m. at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
