CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas softball team hosted the Southland Conference-leading Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions for a doubleheader at Farris Field on Friday. The Bears’ offense was firing on all cylinders, as UCA put up 18 runs on 24 hits to sweep the doubleheader with 8-1 and 10-7 victories.

In the day’s first game, the Bears (26-14, 14-3 SLC) took a lead on a single from Ashley Boswell in the bottom of the second inning, before putting up three runs in the third to extend the lead to 4-0. After second baseman Sarah Bigej drew a one-out walk, catcher Jessie Taylor picked up her 10th home run of the season, blasting a pitch over the fence in left field to put the Bears up 3-0. Shortstop Hayley Parker then drew a two-out walk and stole second base before coming in to score on an error.

The Lady Lions (18-20, 12-4 SLC) cut into the UCA lead in the top of the fourth, when designated player Amber Sather doubled home shortstop Sydney Booker, but the Bears got three more runs in the bottom half of the frame to push their lead to 7-1. Boswell led off the inning with a single, but was erased on a fielder’s choice off the bat of centerfielder Amy Gunnells. After Gunnells stole second base, third baseman Sam Forrest drew a walk. Right fielder Briana Whisenhunt then drove in Gunnells, roping a double to left-center, before Bigej lofted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Forrest. Whisenhunt then came in on a double from designated player Bailey Whisenhunt.

Hannah Stirton doubled in shortstop Tori Seasor in the bottom of the sixth to cap the game’s scoring.

Kylee Studioso (21-8) earned the complete game victory for UCA, limiting SLU to one run on five hits while striking out in seven innings. Taylor Bishop (12-4) took the loss, giving up eight runs, seven earned, on 10 hits and eight walks while striking out four in six innings.

Bigej opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning of the second game, singling up the middle to score Forrest from second base.

The Bears exploded for five runs on five hits and two errors in the bottom of the second. Parker opened the inning with an infield single before stealing second base. A single up the middle from Stirton brought in Parker and a fielding error on the play saw Stirton end up at second. Following a sacrifice bunt, Gunnells singled in Stirton and stole second base. Following an error and a stolen base from Forrest, Whisenhunt ripped a single to left to drive in Gunnells and then stole second. Bigej walked to load the bases for Taylor, who doubled off the fence in left-center to drive in Forrest and Whisenhunt and give the Bears a 6-0 lead.

SLU cut the lead to 6-4 in the top of the third, getting RBIs from left fielder Kinsey Nicholls, Booker, and third baseman Megan Moore, but the Bears put up four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach. Gunnells opened the frame with an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error before scoring on a single up the middle from Forrest. After Whisenhunt doubled to put runners on the corners, Bigej drove a sacrifice fly to drive in Forrest and Taylor drew a walk. Pinch runner Ryan Holdiness and Whisenhunt then executed a double steal before Holdiness came in to score on a single from Parker to give the Bears a 10-4 lead.

The Lady Lions struck twice in the fifth, and once in the seventh, but the Bears proved victorious.

Stephen F. Austin 12, Abilene Christian 4 (6)
Stephen F. Austin 14, Abilene Christian 13
ABILENE, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin softball team displayed a lot of pop and prowess at the plate in Friday evening’s doubleheader against Abilene Christian, using seven home runs to beat the Wildcats 12-4 in a shortened game one and 14-13 in the nightcap. The Ladyjacks improve to 14-26 on the year with the two victories, including a 6-10 mark in Southland Conference play.

Entering Friday’s doubleheader with just 18 total home runs in 38 games this season, the SFA bats came alive to the tune of seven home runs over 13 innings. Katelyn Standley led the way with three dingers on the day while Shalie Day added two long balls of her own. Taylor Fraccastoro launched one in game one and Autumn Holloway contributed her first of the season as well.

As a team, the Ladyjacks hit at a staggering .443 clip over the two games, thanks in part to Day’s huge game two. The SFA slugger went 5-for-5 with two runs, five RBI, two doubles and a home run in the contest to help the Ladyjacks put up 14 runs.

Game One: The Ladyjacks got a balanced attack at the dish in game one as eight players notched a hit and Heather Hollingsworth, Alisa Hamilton, Taylor Vick and Fraccastoro each posted a multi-hit game.

Fraccastoro got the scoring frenzy started with a solo blast in the second inning, putting SFA on top 1-0 early on.

In the third, SFA sent 14 to the plate and put up eight runs on six hits, highlighted by two-run shots from Holloway and Day. Vick doubled and Hamilton singled prior to each homer. Vick recorded her second double of the inning with two outs to send Lindsay Campbell and Fraccastoro home. Hollingsworth rounded out the hit parade with an RBI infield single, giving SFA the 9-0 lead.

After the Wildcats (9-28, 3-14 SLC) chipped back with three runs in the bottom half of the third, the Ladyjacks tacked on another run in the fifth. With runners on the corners and two away, Hamilton swiped second base to allow Vick to score from third.

Vick finished game one with three runs scored, two RBI, two doubles and went 3-for-4.

A two-run homer by Standley in the sixth inning put SFA on top 12-4, and with Callee Guffey’s help, held true for the final.

Guffey (7-11) earned the win and quality start by allowing four runs – three earned – on six hits over a complete six innings. She struck out five in the game.

Game Two: The SFA bats didn’t cool off any in the second game. All nine Ladyjacks that stepped into the box got at least one hit, led by a five-hit performance from Day. Hollingsworth, Hamilton, Campbell, Standley and Vick each connected for two hits apiece.

Standley started the second game the way she ended the first, smacking a two-run laser over the wall in right-center to help SFA jump in front 2-0.

The 2-1 Ladyjack lead heading into the fifth inning drastically changed in the span of one half inning for each team. SFA scored nine runs on nine hits in the frame while ACU answered back with eight runs on six hits and an error.

In the top half, the Ladyjacks hit for the team cycle in just one inning. Standley mashed a three-run homer, Hamilton drove in two on a triple to left field, Day brought Hamilton home on a double, and Lewis, Campbell and Day also each drove in runs via singles.

ACU tightened the gap with a run in the sixth inning to come within one at 11-10. The home run derby continued in the seventh inning with Day sending a three-run homer to right-center, padding the SFA lead to 14-10.

The Wildcats knocked in two more homers in the bottom half to make things interesting, but Guffey stopped the rally and helped the Ladyjacks hang on for the thrilling 14-13 victory.

Freshman Makayla Sikes earned her second win of the season while Guffey picked up her second save.

Lamar 3, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 2
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6, Lamar 5
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Lamar Lady Cardinals were two outs away from a doubleheader sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, but had to settle for a split in Southland Conference softball action Friday.

Lamar posted a 3-2 win in the first game, but dropped a 6-5 decision in the nightcap as the Islanders got a three-run walk-off home run from Brittney Morse with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

"We need to understand we have to score more runs," said Lamar coach Holly Bruder, who saw her team strand eight runners in each game. "We can't be satisfied to just have the lead."

Brynn Baca went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the opener, while Casey Cromwell hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to give Lamar a 3-1 lead. Laura Napoli scattered five hits in a complete-game victory.

"Brynn came up big for us," Bruder said. "Laura pitched well in that first game."

Stephanie Meeuwsen had two hits for Lamar in the second game. Cromwell added one hit as she extended her hitting streak to six games and her streak of reaching base safely to 15 games.

Napoli (14-11) took the loss in relief, allowing three hits and three runs, two earned, in 2 /13 innings.

Lamar first baseman Marissa LeJune set a school record by recording 16 putouts in the first game.

With the split, Lamar (20-19 overall, 11-6 Southland) remained in fifth place in the conference. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (13-23-1, 8-9) is in seventh place, three games behind Lamar. Nicholls, which was at Incarnate Word for a doubleheader, is in sixth place. The top six teams qualify for next month's Southland Conference Tournament at Northwestern State.

Lamar wraps up the series with the Islanders with a single game at noon Saturday. The Lady Cardinals remain on the road to face Texas A&M in a nonconference game Wednesday before hosting Central Arkansas in a three-game Southland series next weekend.

Nicholls 5, UIW 4
UIW 5, Nicholls 4
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Nicholls State University softball team earned a split in its Friday doubleheader at Incarnate Word with a pair of 5-4 decisions, rallying in game one for a victory before another late comeback came up short in the night cap.

The Colonels had twice as many hits as UIW in the series opener and used four of them in the sixth inning to plate four runs, as Nicholls picked up a 5-4 win over the Cardinals.

Neither team scored through the first three innings and UIW held a 2-1 lead heading into the sixth. The Colonels tied the game after a run came home on a throwing error and Danielle Phillips gave Nicholls a 3-2 lead with an RBI single. With two on and two out, Kristen Ahearn delivered a two-run double to left, which turned out to be the difference in the game.

UIW answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to trim the deficit to 5-4, but Hannah Haydel would come in to pitch a perfect seventh to earn her second save of the season.

Nicholls had 12 hits in the victory, led by Phillips and Jessica Taylor with three each. Brooke Morris added two hits as she and Ahearn both recorded a double. Taylor was responsible for the game’s first run as she singled up the middle in the fourth to drive in Payton Gremillion.

Jackie Johnson (6-7) picked up the win, tossing 6.0 innings with four earned runs on six hits. Two of the runs came in the fourth on a two-run single by Natalie Duron, and in the sixth, UIW added one on a RBI single and one on a wild pitch.

Shelbi Swenson led UIW with two hits, while Kristin Hebert (5-14) took the loss in seven innings of work.

A three-run home run in the first inning put UIW ahead and despite a late rally by the Colonels, the Cardinals never relinquished the lead as Nicholls fell, 5-4.

Trailing 5-2 in the final inning, Nicholls pieced together a late comeback, started on a single by Phillips. Kimmie Rodriguez followed a groundout with a walk to put two runners on, and after a fielder’s choice, Taylor hit a single to right to bring home both runners, making the score 5-4. With the tying run at first, Brooke DuBois (4-8) would end the game by forcing a groundout to second.

The Colonels outhit UIW, 11-10, led by three from Gremillion. Haley Parkerson, Haley Stevenson and Taylor chipped in with two each, and Taylor’s two RBIs led the team.

Haydel (12-7) took the loss, giving up four earned runs on 10 hits in 6.0 innings. She struck out one and walked two.

Nicholls cracked the scoring column in the first after Parkerson doubled to lead off the inning and came home on an error. But the Cardinals put two on in their first at-bat on a single and a walk, setting up a three-run homer by Swenson.

The Colonels got one back in the second when Rodriguez homered for the third time this season, making the score 3-2. In the fourth, Nicholls put two on after singles by Taylor and Parkerson with only one out, but both runners were left stranded.

UIW tagged Haydel for insurance runs in the fifth and sixth, which proved to be needed after the Colonels’ scored two in the seventh.

The Cardinals were led on offense by Taylor Johnson with three hits and a run scored.

Nicholls (23-16, 9-8 SLC) and UIW (9-30, 3-14 SLC) will wrap up the three-game set on Saturday at 1 p.m. Live stats and live audio links can be accessed on geauxcolonels.com.
