THIBODAUX, La
. – The Nicholls State University baseball team coupled just enough offense with its overpowering pitching staff to earn a 4-2 victory over Grambling State on Tuesday night at Ray E. Didier Field.
The Colonels (23-14-1) and Tigers (8-26) engaged in a scoreless battle through the first three innings before Nicholls blew things open in the fourth with three runs. Darius Knight singled through the left side and advanced on a Kyle Reese single to left field. A Justin Williams walk loaded the bases before Tanner Vandevere reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Knight. In the subsequent at bat, Christian Correa doubled down the leftfield line, sending both Reese and Vandevere home.
Grambling State responded in the fifth, turning three singles into a run.
The Tigers took advantage of a pair of Colonel errors to score in the seventh and pull within a run.
Nicholls punched back in the bottom of the frame, adding a security run to take a 4-2 lead. David Zorn singled, advanced to third after a pair of walks and eventually came home on a sacrifice fly from Knight.
Justin Sinibaldi (8-1) was credited with the win based on Head Coach Seth Thibodeaux submitting a predetermined pitching rotation before the game. Sinibaldi tossed two hitless innings with two strikeouts. Dominant closer Stuart Holmes picked up his 13

Baylor 8, Lamar 6
WACO, Texas - Lamar tried to strike a ninth inning rally, but eight runs in the middle three innings was too much for the Cardinals to overcome in an 8-6 loss to Baylor at the Baylor Ballpark on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action.
Baylor's (16-24) freshman reliever Troy Montemayor struck out the first batter of the ninth, but a rally from Lamar's (18-21) top of the lineup (back-to-back hits by
CJ Moore and
Reed Seeley) chased him for Joe Kirkland.
Stijn van der Meer loaded the bases with a single into right field, his career-high fourth hit of the night.
Jake Nash rolled over a pitch and pushed it down the third base line, but hustled to beat out the throw for an infield single and run batted in. Two batters later, Salazar singled up the middle to score another, but the game was ended a called strike low in the zone to
Brandon Provost.
After two runs from the Bears in each the fourth and fifth frames for a 4-0 lead,
Kyle Markum put a three-spot on the board for LU in the sixth with homer over the left field wall that scored Seeley and van der Meer. Seeley reached on a walk, van der Meer a single.
Baylor answered that with a four-spot in the bottom of the sixth to give it the largest lead of the game at 8-3. Justin Arrington led the inning off with a walk issued from reliever
Brett Brown. Darryn Sheppard followed with a double to the center field wall to put men on second and third.
Leadoff hitter Logan Brown slapped a two-run double to left center, and later scored himself on a double steal that had the pickoff throw roll in to left field. Adam Toth scored on a RBI-single from Kameron Esthay.
Van der Meer closed the gap to 8-4 with on a two-out shot over the right field wall. It was the first of his career at Lamar.
Of the eight runs pushed across in the middle frames by BU, four were scored by Esthay and Mitch Price. Esthay also knocked in another.
Lamar went through 10 pitchers in the game, and freshman right-hander
Eric Foshee (2-4) started it off. He worked three innings and gave up two runs on three hits and two walks. He had one perfect inning.
The Vidor native was taken out in the fourth inning after he surrendered a leadoff homer to Esthay and a double to Price.
No other Cardinal pitcher worked more than one frame.
Kody Hessemer took over as the Bears' win leader (4) with the victory Tuesday. He pitched five complete and gave up two runs on five hits and two walks. The junior came out for the sixth, but was pulled after he walked Seeley and allowed a single to van der Meer.
Montemayor worked through the eighth and retired one in the ninth, but was pulled after he gave up the back-to-back singles. Kirkland earned his first save of the season with two strikeouts.
Lamar accounted for more hits than Baylor (15-10), but left 10 stranded, five in scoring position.
Van der Meer was the Cards' leading hitter on four base knocks in five at-bats, and
Mason Salazar followed with three in five plate appearances. Moore and Provost each record two hits. Provost was a substitute in the sixth inning for
Justin Eckols.
LU opens a crucial Southland Conference series on Friday at 6 o'clock against Incarnate Word. The second game of the three-game set is scheduled for 2:00 on Saturday and the finale at 1:00 on Sunday.
Lamar has one final midweek game of the season. It comes against Texas Southern at 4:00 April 29 at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Texas Tech 10, Abilene Christian 2
NACOGDOCHES, Texas
- Stephen F. Austin spotted visiting Louisiana Tech a five-run first inning lead and never recovered, dropping a 9-2 decision to the Bulldogs Tuesday at Jaycees Field. The loss drops SFA to 13-28 on the season as the Lumberjacks have dropped nine of their last 10.
Louisiana Tech took control of the game early, scoring five runs in the top of the first as starter
Ryan Manz lasted just 0.1 innings, giving up five runs on no hits, walking five. The Bulldogs then added another run in both the second and third innings, breaking the game open with a 7-0 lead after two and a half.
SFA managed to generate some offense in the bottom of the third, beginning with back-to-back doubles from
Matthew Dickey and
Eric DeJesus to lead off the inning, cutting the deficit to 7-1 off the run scored by Dickey.
Dan O'Neill then ripped a single up the middle to allow DeJesus to score, closing the gap to 7-2 after three complete.
But that would be the only offense the Lumberjacks could muster as SFA recorded just one hit over the final six innings of play and Louisiana Tech added solo runs in the seventh and ninth innings to push the score to the 9-2 final.
It was a loss by committee for SFA on the evening as 25 different Lumberjacks saw action, including nine different pitchers. DeJesus was the lone bright spot, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored as five other 'Jacks scattered the remaining five hits. The lone hit past the third inning was a single by
Anthony Soriano in the eighth.
The Lumberjack pitching staff allowed 14 walks on the night, comprised of nine bases on balls and five hit-by-pitch, striking out 11.
Louisiana Tech starter Braden Bristo had a dominating performance for the Bulldogs, allowing two runs on six hits with nine strikeouts over 7.0 innings, throwing a career-high 124 pitches. In contrast,
Cody Adams had the high pitch count for SFA with 55, logging 1.2 innings with a team-high three strikeouts.
The season-ending home stand now heads to the final home Southland Conference series of the year as the 'Jacks welcome Abilene Christian to Jaycees Field for a three-game series, beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m. Rain is in the forecast throughout the weekend, so stay tuned to @SFA_Baseball and SFAJacks.com for any weather-related alterations to the weekend schedule.

Houston 5, McNeese State 4
LAKE CHARLES, La. – The McNeese State baseball team hung in there with one of the top ranked teams in the country Tuesday evening but were unable to complete a late-game rally and fell short to No. 22 Houston, 5-4, at Cowboy Diamond.
The loss dropped the Cowboys to 22-19 on the season while Houston improved its record to 27-14 overall. The two teams are scheduled to meet again later in the season when McNeese travels to Houston on May 5.
The Pokes entered the final frame of the contest trailing by three runs and were down to their last out until senior Connor Lloyd’s first career home run gave the Cowboys new life and a chance to come-from-behind and score the win. However, Houston changed pitchers and were able to tame the Pokes for the victory.
It was the second time this season that McNeese hit three homers in a single game but were unable to secure the victory. The Cowboys launched three against ULM earlier in the month but fell to the Warhawks.
Starting pitcher Trent Fontenot (3-3) fired off three scoreless innings but ran into rough patch in the fourth frame as he surrendered four runs. The inning was sparked by a leadoff strikeout-wild pitch and escalated to four runs scored off of two hits. Fontenot exited the game having tossed 4.0 total innings and allowed three hits and five walks along with two strikeouts.
Relievers Cole Prejean and Cory LaPeze shutdown the offensive attack from the Cougars as the two combined for 5.0 innings and allowed just one run to score despite giving up two walks. LaPeze finished the game with two strikeouts.
The Cowboys cut into the lead in the middle of the contest after receiving help from the power swings of juniors Billy Sommers and Connor Crane. Sommers’ second tater of the season came in the fifth inning that cut the Houston lead to just three runs while Crane belted his seventh of the year to minimize the score to three runs.
Offensively, Lloyd led the squad with a 1-for-4 performance along with two RBIs and a run scored. Senior Andrew Guillotte batted 2-for-4 with a run scored in the ballgame while Sommers’ and Crane’s solo shots registered an RBI as well.
Guillotte continued to crawl towards the all-time stolen base mark Tuesday evening after swiping two bases during the contest. He now stands at 74 career stolen bases and is four away from tying the all-time mark held by former Cowboy Jace Peterson.
Guillotte also inched one step closer to passing another McNeese alumni in the record books. His two hits on the evening have placed him in a two-way tie with Shon Landry for third place in the all-time hits category.
McNeese will continue its homestand this coming weekend when the Pokes welcome in-state foe Nicholls to town for a crucial three-game Southland Conference series set to begin Friday at 6 o’clock.
